Timeout call in the 1993 NCAA final….. one of the worst plays of all time & for sure cost the Cavs any chance at winning that game. No way they win OT after such a deflating moment.

Cleveland played remarkably well, and going up 1-0 would have changed the entire complexion of the series.

He did the same thing a few years ago when he played for the Knicks. Game was tied against Houston. Knicks had the ball and shot clock off. He missed a 3 pointer . Houston got the ball and scored. JR said he 4Got how much time was left on clock. Jr is a talented dude. He can defends hit 3s. But it’s Mental mistakes like these thats kept him from becoming an elite player.

So does half the world. What’s your point? Him being a dumbshit has nothing to do with him smoking weed.

Klay smokes weed. So do I. So do plenty of  athletes, mathematicians, politicians, lawyers, astrophysicists etc etc.

The difference between these people and JR Smith…. is JR Smith is just not particularly bright. It has nothing to do with him smoking weed. Do you honestly believe he was a cerebral basketball mastermind until he started smoking weed?

I get the feeling you haven’t taken drugs if you think they turn you from an intelligent person into a half-bright dumbass.

Weed has a different effect on everybody because everybody is different. A lot of people can handle it but tons people do some dumb shit when they are high. I don’t think JR dribbled out the clock because he was high though.

What a costly mistake with the Cavs having a chance to steal game 1.

The only 2 plays I can think of was not in the NBA but in college. One was C Webber calling a Time out when Michigan didn’t have any left.

the other was Freddie Brown of Georgtown making a No look pass to James Worthy on the last few seconds to play with a national title at stake.

    Look that one up youngsters.

In the meantime I can’t think of any on te NBA level. Good job JR, SMDH.

JR has a responsibility to his teammates to focus on the damn game. He let everyone down by CHOOSING not to be properly engaged in a moment that requires 100% awareness. No matter what.

He deserves everything coming to him

The guy did a huge mistake, that’s it. Maybe he’s stupid, maybe his mind went blank, who knows? He didn’t do it on purpose and I doubt he was thinking about his next holidays or his new car in that particular moment. Saying he ‘chose’ not to be engaged is highly unlikely and based on nothing but emotional reasoning.

Refs on Golden State side tonight especially in the last 2 minutes, dont understand why this will be a short series now, if Cavs won would of been a longer seies.

OMG!! Jr Caused Lebron a Chance to add another achievement to his legacy. But So many weird things happened in that game. That charging call on Kd that was reversed to a blocking call on Lebron. The Refs didn’t call it when Draymond committed a lane violation when Hill shot that free throw. Which would’ve gave Hill another free throw. Super Weird that Clarkson was a +11. But Failed to score and played like garbage, like it was his 1st time in a nba game. Thank God Livingston grabbed Draymond’s arm when he was about to punch Tristan. Or he might been out for the rest of playoffs and part of next season. I’m eager to see will the league suspend Klay & Tristan. Warriors should be glad they came away with the win. But should be embarrassed that it took them overtime to do it.

One of Lebrons best performances all time, calls were not going the Cavs way in this one on the road and they had a chance to win game 1. Goerge Hill misses a clutch free throw and Earl Smith enters Shaqtin a fool HOF.

I’ve been watching the NBA for about 35 years, and other than my time in the military when watching sports wasn’t really an option, I haven’t missed many big playoff games.

I’m sure there have been other boneheaded plays, mostly though were just guys throwing the ball out of bounds or missing clutch shots, etc. Karl Malone missing free throws or getting stripped by Jordan and Nick Anderson’s meltdown at the free throw line all come to mind.

But the reason everyone remembers Chris Webber’s TO was because it was an instance of not knowing what was going on with the game on the line. Which was bad, but it was also a product of the hype that team received and the fact that people were either rooting for Michigan, or against Michigan.

But man, Webber was a kid at that time. Not excusing it, but a young guy in a huge situation, you know I kinda understand what happened.

But JR has played in a lot of NBA games, and in a lot of big games and is a Professional athlete. There is utterly no excuse for not knowing what the score is at the end of a Finals game. None. You couldn’t come up with an excuse if you tried.

There aren’t many iconic moments in Finals history that people talk about 30-40 years after the fact. And nearly all of them are positive. The steal by Bird. The block on Iggy by LeBron. The lob dunk from Kobe to Shaq that still gets replayed over and over. The clutch shots by Jordan against Utah.

But this will be one that is never forgotten in large part to how rare it is that someone makes such a huge mental error with the game on the line. The only way it gets swept under the rug of history is if Cleveland wins it all. That’s my opinion.

Another thing that immediately came to mind was… JR just ruined lebrons finals career high and arguably destroyed his shot at being the GOAT.

I had to stop watching 2 mins into OT, Lebron looked OUT OF IT. He could not believe JR just threw the entire game… Cavs offense couldnt buy anything in OT because they were all shook.

Hell, i even think TT will miss next game… All because JR.

I hope JR never gets hired again by any franchise. Fck it, i dont feel bad for him… Hes has more money than ill ever make.

Hate to say it, but that moment kind of encapsulates his entire career. Just a lack of focus. There is absolutely no excuse for that at this level of basketball. But I kind of feel bad for him to be honest. He is likely never going to live this down.

Also, it kind of gets lost in the moment but KD didn’t box out jr at all on that play, which is the reason he got the rebound in the first place and almost as inexcusable in that situation as the play jr made. But no one will talk about it because it didn’t cost them the game. But it very easily could of.

Huge loss for the Cavs to take, if they had got that first game they would at worse been tied when they got homecourt advantage for games 3 and 4, so GSW would be playing catch up or damage limitation.

For a guy who is supposed to be a shooter, I don’t know why JR didn’t take a shot, he’d done well to get the rebound after Hill had missed. Guys will miss FT’s so I’m not going to be too hard on Hill, he’s a good character guy and someone a neutral might like to get a title.

It does LBJ no good either after another stellar game and if the Cavs now lose the series heavily vastly reduces his chances of staying.

Too bad for Cleveland JRs takeout on Klays legs wasn’t intentional and more malicious, he’d be thrown out and suspended. Way more negatives than positive and to his game the last two years.

Prediction for next game: a Warrior will miss a three badly just grazing the net and JR will take out the ball for an inbounds thinking they made it. Or something equally as dumb

Think about this though … if JR doesn’t get the offensive rebound on the free throw, the Cavs still probably lose and today no one would be talking about JR Smith. George Hill would be getting all the blame for missing the free throw.

Is it fair to murder a guy for botching an opportunity that only existed in the first place because that same guy created it?

      Yes it is fair.

No matter how many ‘what ifs’ and hypothetical ‘sliding doors’ situations you come up with….

He needs to know what is happening in the game HE’S PLAYING IN!

This isn’t the first time he wasn’t focused on the game either. That play where he hugged Jason Terry OFF COURT during the game and his defensive assignment scored BECAUSE HE WAS OFF THE COURT was just ridiculous.

I’ve never seen a bigger example of someone that would rather look cool than make some effort. He’s basically the opposite of TJ McConnell. Despite the immense difference in god-given talent… I’d take a team of 5 TJs over a team of 5 JRs every day of the week.

Also, JR did nothing to create that opportunity. The ball (literally) fell into his lap. Watch the replay of the rebound. He didn’t move.

I remember thinking "wow JR made a hustle play to get an offensive rebound"…. so I watched the replays looking directly at him. Nope. The ball literally bounced into his arms.

Yeah you’re right. Durant actually boxed him out properly, the ball just went completely over and past Durant and into Smith’s hands.

Also noticed that the first thing Van Gundy said after time ran out was that LeBron was trying to call a timeout. How can there be three refs on the floor and none are aware of what the best player in the world is doing? Not recognizing the timeout call (I assume it was coming from the Cavs’ bench as well) was worse than the shady review of the block/charge call, IMO.

Nerves got to Hill on that second free throw. He hit the back rim on the first one and made it. Then short armed the second, everyone knew it was off before he released it.

Man, of all the Cavs players on the floor, the rebound came to JR, wow, I thought he was gonna pass to Lebron, I was shcoked when he rushed to the 3pt line, I knew from there on that they’ve lost the game, the momentum and morale of their team suddenly disappered because of that mistake. lol. I thought I’ll never see this in the NBA with the game on the line, much more in the NBA Finals, with LBJ cementing his legacy, pouring 51 pts. What the heck was that. Very wierd game, refs reversing a crucial call, if it was not on the act of shooting, i’ll probably  be ok with but since it was on the act of shooting, refs award KD free throws, I was really shocked. I think Lebron is one of the unluckiest greats ever.
