joel embiid will not be the #1 pick in 14 because...

I believe he will decide to stay for one more year, to improve his game more. plus he can’t even drive yet. what does everyone else think?

I disagree. He has shown good enough skill on both ends to be in the NBA. He can stay for one more year and dominate college basketball, but I really do not feel it is necessary. He will have NBA trainers working with him once he gets there, he will be fine.

He definitely has a decent chance of staying. If you haven’t been following the kid, then you wouldn’t know why.
He is researching past big men and realizes that they all stayed more than one year
He isn’t quite accustomed to American culture yet (he said this…)
He is obsessed with Hakeem…who stayed more than one year
If anyone one is going to stay it’s going to be Embiid or Parker
I think he will leave for the NBA because his teammate, Andrew Wiggins, will most definitely leave.
The decision is closer than it seems, Embiid wants to be great in the NBA, and he doesn’t seem the type to be too phased by the money.

  Embiid is 240-250 pounds and, at the least, he’ll be a big enough body. He’s learning extremely fast and he works hard. He’s not ready for the NBA yet, but maybe he will be by the time the draft rolls around.

He can improve his game in the NBA, he doesn’t need to return to work on something NBA coaches can teach him. He’s leaving. Barring an injury I don’t see how he slips past 3rd. That’s enough incentive to leave. This draft has a chance to be special.

  Just another way to look at it, maybe he wants to make an immediate impact.
  If he feels that he’s ready, then he should go to the NBA, and that’s what it’s going to come down to.
  I’m just saying he has a decent chance of staying based on what he’s said to reporters and coaches.

    Sure he may have a decent chance of staying, but that does not mean he should. I really doubt his reasoning for staying back would be to make a bigger impact. Right now he is basically the consensus #1 pick, and I think he will improve quicker if he enters the NBA this year. He may be a little raw offensively, but I think he has enough of a post game to be a decent contributor off the bat. I have always thought that the only reason a prospect should stay back is if they are raw or if they want to increase their draft stock. When looking at top prospects, scouts tend to look down upon prospects staying (i.e. Marcus Smart), and also they can risk getting injured, which would end up effecting their draft stock.

More promise than Hasheem thabeet already in his short career. And we know how big men are valued in the NBA. It’s rare to have a great one. And I actually do think embiid has the highest ceiling

I disagree that you can work on your game in the NBA to the same extent that you can in college. In college he’s going to have the offence go through him no matter what happens, so he’ll continue to get touches to get better.
However, very few NBA teams run their offence through big men unless they are ready; because NBA coaches are all about winning and won’t give a rookie the keys to the team if it won’t help them win in the short term.
Touches in the post for raw big men are few and far between, this is a guard’s league.
I think he should stay another year and really refine his game before making the jump.

Shaq was talking about the lack of post players in the NBA and he attributes it to them all leaving early and missing an opportunity to really perfect the moves. A great big man can get by pretty much on his size/athleticism in college, so he comes into the NBA and all of a sudden doesnt have the size/athleticism advantage and struggles. I doubt he will stay, but it might help him a lot if he does.

I’m not an expert of that stay or go thing but here what I think..it’s bad to come out when you aren’t great in college..if you can get only 11/7 per 36min in college you most likely won’t play much in the NBA and that’s limits your speed of improvement..
but if you are getting those 11/7 in like 22mpg like Embiid and you have numerous double doubles with block shots parties you may better go pro..
he will be good enough to play at least 25-30minutes skill wise and 7′ 250lbs body looks pretty ready too along with that athleticism.. and I believe playing against NBA guys makes you better and makes you want to be even better not like in college to dominate for the second straight year but still not knowing what is like to play against the bests..
