jaycee24ParticipantSo when I heard the Joe Johnson to Detroit rumblings naturally I was floored jawdropped if you will. I know Stan Van is a smart guy and knows the league thats why he runs the show so I had to figure out why in the hell Stan would be interested in Joe Johnson or his contract. I dug deeper and I like what I’ve discovered as far as why this deal works. Here’s what I believe is Stans reasoning.
#1 We still could sign Monroe next season
By waiving Smith I was pretty disappointed that we couldn’t find a place to trade him but when the unexpected wins kept coming I realized maybe Stan really knows what he’s doing. Either way his full 13.5 a year counts fully against us this year however next year it only hits the 2015-16 cap for 5.4. I also found out the cap for next season is going to be around 68 million which makes this deal even more sensable. We’d rid ourselves of the 8.3 million Jennings makes as well as the 4.5 mill for Caron Butler next year although you do take on 25 mills for JJ next year but to me so be it. Add up the remaining salaries as well your rookies plusJohnson tacked on that leaves Detroit with 20-21.5 million to work with in cap space. I’d say Monroe is definitely worth a max deal considering what the cap will look like in 2016-17. If you don’t, cool…you go after Draymond or Tobias Harris or Brandon Knight or whoever.
#2 Johnson is a good fit for this team
Johnson can play and guard from the point to SF. His handle is one of the best in the league and the guy can still fill up the bucket. I think for this season he could start at the 3 but play minutes at point as well. I think he’d almost be the Hedo guy Stans wanted for awhile now I think that’s what he hoped Smith could fufill in his own way. Just imagine stretches of Joe at point Meeks and Singler on the wing with Tolliver and Drummond as your frontcourt. That’s Stan Van 4 out 1 in basketball. Having him there with that team for this year and the next as a leader and captain could give them a push and help them gel if he were there for a good amount of time. The #1 worry would be his health because he is tying the cap up so much. Either way when his salary comes off the books you have that 25 million to re-sign your franchise Center when his rookie deal is finished.
#3 Now would be the time to move Jennings
Let me be clear in saying I’ve never like Jennings. I never wanted Knight to leave and was sickened to see Jennings in Pistons blue. BUT I have to say he showed his worth as a PG this year when we went on the roll we did and if he was healthy I’d still want him in Detroit but it almost looks like it’d be in our best interest to move him. If Jennings had 4 years left on his deal I’d still want him but when his contract is up it’ll be a real pain to try to keep him given that the contracts will rise and given his value to the team he’d want a load of cash, most likely more than he’s worth. If you get a equal impact player who fufills multiple current needs with a contract of the same length who cares if he makes 25 million? The Pistons woud essentially be trading Jennings and throw ins to Brooklyn anyways. Not to mention DJ who’s more than capable of being your starter is a good value at just 3 million. Johnson gives you time at 3 and the point and you still can make time for Singler who’d really play a similar just downgraded role. Think of it this way…if Detroit has Jennings still and Greg doesn’t stay…were in deep poop. If we have Joe Johnson and Greg leaves we still have a balanced roster with DJ there and Joe holding down the 3. You then have the option to use that money elsewhere in whatever they see fit and they’d still have a chance to contend!
Having said all this I’m rooting for the trade to go down and although I don’t care for him that much I’d be thankful for the run Jennings contributed to the Pistons this year they were crazy fun to watch for a minute there

King CaluchaParticipantYou could still sign Monroe… if he really wanted to stay… but he doesn’t.

jaycee24ParticipantOk so who’s giving him a max deal then? Lakers? The Knicks? Philly? If he wants to bolt Detroit for a lesser situation I don’t want him anyways I think he’s posturing for a max deal

benny15Participantis it the money? i kind of remember him getting a pretty lucrative offer from the Pistons as a restricted free agent last off-season. i think he wanted to see his fit with the team more than anything because both he and drummond prefer to play center and not power forward and SVG’s track history has him going with only 1 true big with a mobile or stretch 4, something he isnt.
i do believe the pistons have a strong chance of signing him into a long term deal this off-season due to the fact that he’s had some really good games for them and theyve won a decent ammount since josh smith was waived and continued on even when Jennings went down, but itll come down if he likes his role on the team and more importantly, in SVG’s system.

r377ParticipantI would like to see the Pistons go after TJ Warren (who the suns don’t play). We could give up this years pick (top 10 protected).
Could also see if the Magic would let Harkless go for a second rounder (I know they want a first rounder but no one will do it)

jaycee24ParticipantThe offer they gave him was close to a max deal but I wouldn’t of wanted to sign up for 5 years for a team committed to Josh Smith starting at SF either. He’s honestly in my eyes as much a franchise guy as Drummond just because of his offensive impact. I think Stans found a way to feature Monroe and Monroe realizes that I wouldn’t leave that kind of role and money for a situation with teams in flux like LA or NY unless he really doesn’t like Detroit for whatever reason.

r377ParticipantSVG and Monroe are close. SVG shipped out Smith for Monroe. I would say there is a 90-95% chance he re-signs in the off season (especially if pistons make playoffs).
Draymond Green has already come out and said he would look at signing with Detroit so I think the Pistons would be in good shape….

jaycee24ParticipantThats why I think this trade might not go down because it takes away 6 million in cap space. They could use a max on Moose and still have about 12 mill left if they wanna offer that to Draymond (fellow Saginaw native!) Then use a MLE on a veteran….that’s really a damn good team if u think about it but they’d probably have to depend on their rookies to contribute.
