Ghost01ParticipantVia Drew Franklin of Fox Sports…
While roaming the bowels of John Paul Jones Arena after Virginia’s ACC title-clinching victory on Saturday, I ran into the Syracuse players and coaching staff as they were gathering outside the visiting locker room to head home. Everyone was visibly upset, as you can imagine, but no one seemed unhappier than head coach Jim Boeheim.
I won’t say his mood was quite what it was when he was ejected in the final seconds of his team’s loss at Duke — that outburst went viral — but it was pretty clear he was running on a short fuse. And that fuse ran out on a security guard directly in front of me.
"YOUR JOB IS TO STAND THERE AND BE QUIET," Boeheim shouted to his security detail, who immediately apologized and insisted he was only trying to tell the coach how to exit the arena.
Boehiem cut off the man’s explanation, emphatically telling him, "YOU SAY NOTHING.
Shocked by what I was witnessing, I reached in my pocket for my phone to capture the altercation — Instagram! — when Boeheim’s eyes met mine. Suddenly that photo didn’t seem like a great idea. Not at all. He had a don’t-you-even-think-about-it look on his face, leaving me standing there frozen like a deer in headlights.
If we’re being honest with each other here, FOX Sports readers, I almost soiled my denim. I’m not ashamed to admit it. He broke me down without saying a word and I wanted no part of what would’ve happened next if that phone came out of my pocket.
So remember this story if you ever find yourself around Jim Boeheim immediately after his team loses by 19 points to give up the ACC regular-season title. Don’t make the same mistake I did by attempting to capture his anger on camera, and don’t you dare try to give him directions out of the arena. Just stand there and be quiet. Say nothing.

GrandmamaParticipantHaha, that’s funny. What an encounter. I’ve always gotten that feel from Boeheim. He seems like an uptight douche bag who always has that smug look on his face.

jonus grumbyParticipantwe need to think who gives someone the reputation of being a nice guy. In college sports generally a reputation comes from the media covering the guy and the media needs to play nice in order to get the guy to do some interviews or anything else they need. To many in radio and TV put these guys on a pedestal but then when hearing stories about some TV guys they are no different.

samosasParticipantI told the story once before on here, but a guy from my hometown married his sister. Kid is like 5’6 and 130 pounds..maybe. M-f’in Jim Boeheim gives him a left-over pair of shoes like size 19 for Christmas. Said Uncle Jim is a total jerk.

dcaseParticipantBoeheim is the man. He should call Katz out for how he continued to ask questions related to Bernie Fine even though Boeheim repeatedly told him he couldn’t answer those questions d/t the ongoing investigation. Boeheim agreed to an interview related to basketball, but once the cameras were on Katz continued to poke and prod with questions related to Fine. I wish Boeheim would have called Mark Schwartz out too for his handling and reporting of the entire Fine situation.

Moon RiverParticipantI am a huge Orange basketball fan, but admittedly, it is difficult at times to defend Boeheim. He is smug and arrogant, but I would venture that the majority of coaches in his position are the same. The thing that bothers me most is is constant use of sarcasm (like after the most recent Duke game when he said it was a tremendously officiated ball game, until the end). The assembled press laughed and he quickly said, I am being serious, when it is abundantly clear he is not.
He is too smart and too old to need to use the degree of sarcasm he does. However, he is Syracuse, not just the basketball program, university or city, but that entire region of central New York, and he can do what he wants until he decides to hang em up.

TarHeelRavenParticipantI always thought Boeheim was a pretty high character guy. He seemed humble and polite in the interviews I saw him in on ESPN. I’m not too too shocked at his behavior recently. That call at Duke could have gone either way and it was a BIG BIG call that didn’t go the Cuse way. They had a chance to come close to clinching the ACC regular season title at UVA, but got blown out. I would’ve been upset also. That doesn’t give him an excuse to act like a dickhead, but let’s come him a little slack. Let’s be honest, to coach high level college basketball, you have to some some smugness and arrogance to you. All the great ones, Coach K, Bobby Knight, Calipari, Roy Williams have shown it at some point during their career.

LambTheBeast03ParticipantI’ve met Boeheim twice and he couldn’t have been nicer or more accessible. Same with Mike Hopkins. They just lost the ACC title by 20 cut him a break.

LambTheBeast03ParticipantI mean obviously he can be a prolly everyone knows that but it’s part of his charm. Coach K is only slightly nicer and he’s the GOAT. Not to excuse his actions but catch anybody in that situation and they are probably going to look worse than their best.

Ghost01ParticipantWhat does Coach K only being slighly nice than Boeheim have to do with being the GOAT?
I think Coach K is the best college coach of this generation, in the discussion with the all-time greats, but I have no knowledge of/feelings towards how he is as a human being. My hunch is that he is probably similiarly arrogant.
I’m glad you got access to Boeheim, and he absolutely just lost a big game. But treating someone like that is just childish. Get off your high horse, Jim.
