Did this kid make a mistake going overseas or is this a learning lesson?

JERUSALEM — Former U.S. high school basketball star Jeremy Tyler quit Israeli team Maccabi Haifa and returned home Friday, cutting short a disappointing first pro season.

The 18-year-old Tyler arrived in Israel on a wave of publicity in August after deciding to skip his senior year at San Diego High School to gain professional experience.

However, his time in Israel was fraught with problems, and he left two months before the end of the season.

“Due to personal matters, Jeremy chose to leave the team on his own will on March 18 and return home to San Diego,” Maccabi Haifa owner Jeffery Rosen said in a statement. “We wish Jeremy all the best.”

In the 10 games Tyler played for Haifa, the 6-foot-11 power forward averaged only 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds in 7.6 minutes. Tyler, who reportedly earned a $140,000 salary, found it hard to adapt to the pro game and couldn’t find a place in Maccabi Haifa’s starting lineup.

His frustration began to show. Last month, he walked out on the team at halftime to protest not getting more minutes. For the last three games, he sat on the bench not wearing a uniform after being left off the Haifa squad.

Jeremy I think is on his last leg…to bad he’s not 26 regretting all the mistakes he’s made. But there is still that chance he can turn it around….Is he eligible for college play? If not he will get a look at the NBDL level and maybe have a stephen jackson type story…

I have never seen him play but what type of player is he Amare, Tim duncan or a Chris Bosh if any of those??

This is gonna be the problem with kids going over seas. Most of these kids are spoiled prima donnas who don’t know how to act when things don’t go their way. Over there kids aren’t gonna get near the time or respect they think they deserve. Being a big time athlete means you never have to fully grow up. Being a big time athlete in high school generally means you’ve got the maturity and reasoning of a 5th grader. This kid’s biggest weakness in leaving was maturity and drive, and he proved he hasn’t changed for the better. I wouldn’t be surprised if this comes back to haunt him in a serious way. Brandon Jennings will prove to be the exception, not the rule.

Sonny Vaccaro will find him a job outside the D-League. I don’t think that will necessarily be a good thing, but he wants to be a crusader for this cause (whatever that may be) and will not want to have egg all over his face.

Does Canada have a pro basketball league? If so why not go somewhere like that? Closer to home, similar in culture ways and he doesn’t have to deal with the language barriers. I think it was a bad idea going overseas so young.

but it is not close to being as good as the D league or Europe he should go to China and score all he wants.
The kid is young in mind and age Brandon was more mature than this kid. This kid didn’t even finish high school.
He is a spoiled brat, but he is barley 18 and has time to turn it around. He wont be a first round pick though because GMs will worry about his attitude unless he really find a good situation next year and really excel.

He wouldn’t be a 2nd round pick this year. Stephenson and Sidney are young guys with character questions and that has their stock in the 2nd round and they both went to college and Lance had a pretty solid freshman season. A guy who pouted his way off a team while averaging 2 ppg isn’t going to get a look in the 2010 draft.

I cant comment on his situation because im not in his shoes, but is there any he can end up on college team next season??

No, he lost his amateur status. There is 0 chance he can play college ball.

the thing is that 4 nba teams contacted sonny and were still interested and dont think its as bad as peopel think since this is actually pretty common for guys to quit there teams over there. And thats guys that are 26 and older. its farrrrr from over for this kid. hes still basically a highschool sr. he will have other teams overseas contacting him and offerring him more money and more playing time

does anybody know what his game is like? ive heard a more athletic elton brand but i figured a back to the basket scorer that can rebound(if the comparison is even close) would be able to get more minutes for a european team. and should he still be a first round pick in the 2011 mock?

i cant say for sure because ive only seen clips and you cant tell for sure by just watching clips. from what i heard from my nephews aau coach he has a very very high ceiling. nice post game mid range pretty good handles and aggressive when he gets motiavated

well that is why everybody should knows what suits him better
going overseas can be great and can be stupid
I think in the next few years more and more players will do that and give us more stories of fail and success that will help younger talents to evaluate there talents more
simply this generation is the one taking this step first which gave them no history to learn from

I think it is too early to judge him. Lots of people make mistakes in high school, at least give him a chance to turn his life around.
