As a follow up to my post yesterday regarding Frank Vogel’s agreement in priciple with Orlando, I was wondering if it’s widely agreed that Frank Vogel is a top 10 head coach in the NBA today? In no particular order, I feel these are the coaches that are most regarded as current top 10:

    • Popovich
    • Kerr
    • Rick Carlisle
    • Stan Van Gundy
    • Doc Rivers
    • Brad Stevens
    • Mike Budenholzer
    • Erik Spoelstra
    • Tom Thibodeau
    • Terry Stotts
    • Frank Vogel, Dave Joerger, Steve Clifford, Dwyane Casey are in the mix.

So to clarify, is there anybody in that top 10 that Vogel is clearly a better coach than? I mean his team pushed more talented Miami Heat teams to the brink in multiple ECF’s. I think this was a steal for the Magic to get this guy, and that Skiles’ quitting was a huge blessing in disguise for this franchise.

I don’t think dwyane casey is a top ten coach at all and I think now a days Doc Rivers is overrated (Vogel is better to me) , so most likely Vogel fits in somewhere.

He wouldn’t be to me. He’s the classic, defensive first guy who tries to instill toughness but his offensive design leaves a lot to be desired.  I think the stuff he runs is pretty generic. His personality might be better, which could be a huge thing for a young developing team, but in terms of X’s and O’s and design, I don’t think he’s an upgrade over Skiles.  Just taking a quick glance at that list, I would not have him over Joerger or Clifford, who are similar in approach and style, but with better X’s and O’s imo.

Casey should be in consideration though people may not like how the Raptors have played in the post season but give the dude credit especially where he brought the team from, Toronto shouldnt have even been where they are.  . I agree on Doc rivers if anybody is overrated its probably him, Vogal is a good coach but if he was top ten he never wouldve rested George game 5 4th q

I’ll take Vogel over Doc Rivers for sure, maybe SVG as well but I like Stan a lot too.

I’ve said before, I dislike doing numbered rankings because there’s just so much room for interpretation.

Tier 1: Pop, Carlisle, Kerr, Budenholzer

    Tier 2: Stevens, Spo, Thibs

Tier 3: Joerger, Stotts, Vogel, SVG, Clifford

That’s 12 coaches, I’d say at his best, Vogel is like 8 or so. At his worst, he’s probably 13 or 14. So he’s good.
