I personally don’t think that Embiid having to miss another couple of games is indicative of long term issues.  But, when you have the #1 pick, do you look at Wiggins and Parker and basically go with the guys who show little risk?  I was watching highlights of LeBron’s 61 and saw Oden out there getting his 12 minutes and they finished the highlights by talking about Durant (25 years old) versus LeBron.

Oden had injury concerns coming out but was the "next great center" and the old adage is you always go with the big guy when all things are equal.  Portland lost 2 future all-stars to career altering injuries with Oden and Roy.  They are back in the mix but they have to be a little jealous of the situation that their former Northwest partners the Thunder have put themselves in.

If I were a GM with the top pick, I would take Wiggins or Parker.  Basically, if Embiid misses 75% of his first 3 seasons with back issues, every basketball mind would say, "You knew his back was an issue in college!  You have no one to blame but yourselves!"

    What do you guys think?

Greg oden coming in really didnt have any knee/leg problems. he hurt his wrist but had nothing to do with the injuries he had later on in his career. injuries jus happen.

but as for Embiid, i dont think so. his back problems arent Jared Sullinger-esque type of problems. its jus nix and bruises from hard falls. i believe if the tourney started tomorow he would be ready, Coach Self is jus making sure he goes in healthy without any risk of tweaking it before the most important time of the year which is the tourney.

Also, Parker and Randle both broke their foot in HS, somthing more severe than Embiid minor problems right now.Yet no one seems to even know or care. i really doubt scouts will be put off by Embiid minor issues.

Yes, breaking your foot can lead to arthritic problems and the issues of the bone not healing properly.  But, as I state below, backs are VERY tricky.  I don’t think a broken bone even becomes a blip on a GM’s radar.  As far as Oden, I know he had the wrist issue.  I thought it was cool how he shot free throws with the opposite hand (and was still dominant).  But, I thought there were issues at some point in his life with knees.

Yes he had the wrist issue in college but if I remember correctly the concern that people had about him was that he had one leg that was longer than the other which can lead to health issues

I was thinking the same thing. I could be wrong, but I think I heard he has had a few back injuries now. When it comes to 7 footers, any injury history should be a sign of caution. I already had Wiggins atop my big board so I’d have taken him regardless. Though if you’re a GM this has to put a little doubt in your mind about taking Embiid #1 in this class.

Bill Self said it was just a strain (as it was earlier in the season).  They performed an MRI and were told that he just needed to rest.  To be honest, he is playing a sport that uses different muscle groups than he is used to using, at a frequency his body is not used to.  I would usually give him the benefit of the doubt.

Mitch McGary also had a "strained/sprained" back at first, but eventually it became more serious.  I had a stress fracture in my back (L5 vertebrae) and missed a year of sports.  It got better from rest, then it got worse over time, then at 25 I needed to fuse 2 of my vertebrae together.  I was first diagnosed with a "back sprain", but when it didn’t get better I when to an ortho doctor and got a "better" diagnosis.  Just wanted to put that out there for full disclosure.

We aren’t talking about drafting him AT ALL, we are talking about taking him #1 when there are two other guys in the Top 3 that could be taken #1 and nobody would bat an eyelash.  If I were taking someone with the #1 pick, there would have to be ZERO injury concerns unless there was just a significant gap in talent between one guy and everyone else.  Then I might take a chance if his injury history was minimal.  That isn’t the case this year.

I watched the game where Embiid strained his back amd it was an acute I jury from taking a hard fall, not some sort of degeneratove condition; plenty of people would have a strained back after a fall like that.

    I’m not concerned, no.

The Greg Oden shorter leg wasn’t raised during his draft year as far as I recall, the wrist injury was well documented but he returned by December that year so wasn’t out long. I think after Oden, GM’s will be cautious about guys with injury problems but Nerlens Noel still went 6th last year after having a serious injury he is still recouperating from.

The leg things was raised and if not raised, it was known by the teams. They did a full physical examination and the leg issue is large enough to be noticeable with the naked eye, much less with a measuring tape going all over the guy.

Back issues are tricky. But as mentioned above, foot injuries are right there are the same level. They all factor in. But really all these guys are potential franchise players. Any one of them could justify the number one pick in a normal draft class.

I have been saying hes injury should be noted im a very active young male but I to have back problems and a lot of physical contact mixed with long intervals of activity  hurts me. Also sometimes just sleeping on my back kills me when I leave the gym and from my understanding embed is worse off then me having to miss games and what not, thanks for posting this because ppl don’t realize their are injuries and lingering problems its nt known if he had go hurt but having a lingering issue is worse then just healimg up and moving on.

wish him the best of luck.

You don’t think it is a long term concern but you would take Wiggins or Parker because of these issues? That doesn’t make much sense to me. I personally would take Wiggins #1 before these issues arose and now that he is going to be missing some games (hopefully he is back by the Big 12 tourney then this won’t be as much of a concern…more of a precaution) I might move him down to 3rd behind Jabari as well because the top 3 are really that close in my mind.

It’s good that it isn’t his feet, ankles or knees…but a bad back at a young age can be a bad sign. Either way as a Sixers fan I would still be more than happy to have any of these top 3 prospects.

I think Bill Self doesn’t want to jeapordize a 19 year old’s health for Texas Tech and West Virginia. Just seems precautionary at this point.

I feel like if a team is truly split on him then it could come into play, but that’s about it.

I would like if he would finish the season strong with some legitimate "I’m the No.1 pick" type performances, because he’s been short on those lately.

unless its a major injury or chronic history, which this does not appear to be…then you still pick the player you like the best or feel has the best potential.  unless something comes out of the pre-draft med reports…then you are basically taking the same risk on all of them.

I saw the Hulk Hogan move that dumped him to the ground in Austin. I think a robot would’ve had some twisted steel after that hip toss. (No call by the refs either way was quite puzzling) Since he’s a bit banged up and they’ve wrapped up #10 and have Tech and WV on the slate, I don’t think it’s an issue at all. The kid will continue to fill out his frame and I think he’ll be fine long term. The MRI revealed no structural damage so the kid just needs some rest. If it were the big dance, he’d be playing. I wouldn’t hesitate drafting him high if my team needed a center.

Seems like it should be a very minor precaution. If I were locked between Embiid and someone else with a pick, I’d use it as a tiebreaker. Otherwise, I’d disregard it unless he stays out for longer than expected or looks less springy when he returns.
