valentineBefore the draft I was hyping the PF crop, and with good reason. Even Christian Wood is flashing major signs of future impact basketball.
But holy crap fellaws, these shooting guards are blowing up right in front of us!
Stanley Johnson can and might play tons of SG minutes, DRussell might actually be a very solid pass-first shooting guard that LA needs, Hezonja hasn’t broken out yet but he is adjusting to a lot more than his fellow rookies.
But Devin Booker, RJ Hunter, Rashad Vaughn, all blowing up like it’s the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade! Even Terry Rozier is shooting like 50% from 3, and before you call him a point guard, know that he can kick ace from either position, from Day 1.
Mudiay has shooting guard size, and could easily play SG if he had a good 3 and D point guard next to him. Same goes for Jerian Grant and Delon Wright.
Kelly Oubre still has as much talent and upside as anybody in this draft.
Then you have Justin Anderson, RHollisGrinderson, Joe Young in Indy, and Norman Powell in Toronto.
Crazy deep class for impact shooting guards, and I haven’t even mentioned the Harrisons.
Nor have I mentioned two guards who are among the very best shooters in this class, Cam Payne and Tyus Jones. Jones looks better than Zach LaVine, and I definitely slept on him before the draft.
As of RIGHT NOW, the rookie SG/SG-hybrid rankings look like this:
Stanimal
Mudiay
Vaughn
Booker
Hunter
Rozier
J Grant
Hezonja
Upside-wise the leaderboard is probably looking something like:
Oubre – can shoot right over the top of SGs, and will have above average strength soon
Stanley – two way talent is very important. See Oubre and Rozier
Rozier – athletically dominant, underrated shooter, two way domination potential. He’ll end up being a star PG, but like pre-injury DRose, Rozier has major shooting guard ability and potential as well.
Booker – looks like Klay to me. Not bad for an 18 year old or whatever.
Hezonja – would have been higher, but Booker is already showing major ability, not just potential. Neither Booker nor Hezonja show outstanding defensive potential.
RJ Hunter – This kid is every bit the virtuoso that DRussell was hyped to be, except RJ Sniper never gets his feathers russelled at 26 feet out. Underrated defender, as smart as they come. All the skills and talent you could ask for offensively except a great first step, which he doesn’t need because he plays off the ball as well as any shooting guard in the NBA right now. Just a natural, the game is effortless like when you watch a veteran Steph Curry. Hunter’s 8’8" standing reach is TRULY ELITE for a shooting guard, and his ultra-quick release is already being compared to Steph Curry’s by opposing announcers. People think Hunter isn’t physically gifted, but his standing reach is 1" shorter than Blake Griffin’s, and he’s a SHOOTING GUARD.
Vaughn – This guy really fills it up, and his point guard skills are underrated. He’s like an all star version of Tim Hardaway Jr. Or a better offensive Brad Beal with worse defense.
Jerian Grant – He’s older, but he has every skill in the book, and is a two way player. He’ll be a key contributor to the Knicks surprise playoff appearance this year.

T RexVaughn has a lot of Harden to him. I guess that would be an all star version of THardaway Jr.

T RexMust have been before every analytics model realized the Celtics will probably win between 47-49 games.

King CaluchaParticipantRozier – athletically dominant, underrated shooter, two way domination potential.
LOL somebody has a crush on Rozier

BostonCs FanParticipantThe defense and potential is there for Rozier. He’s already a good penetrator to the rim only real knock entering the draft was his jumpshot and pg skills. His shot has been falling in and has certainly surprised me of how poised he looks playing the point

BostonCs FanParticipantDon’t sleep on Rozier… Reminds me a lot like Bledsoe plus all the charactistics my fellow Celtics fan just listed are quite true. As far as Hunter, I love the kids game I truly believe he got some klay Thompson in him. Dannny and the staff up front are doing great.

T RexThose still sleeping on Rozier never did their homework. He shot 79% on 5.6 FTAs per game last year, and 37% from 3 the year before.
Like Marcus Smart, Rozier is already a better 3 point shooter than Wade, Kobe, Mudiay, or Westbrook ever were, or ever will be.

Adidas30ParticipantRozier isnt much different than Avery Bradley probably a little more potential on the offensive side of the ball…I think he will be a solid guy on the defensive side of the ball. Reminds me a little bit of oliadipo little smaller and not quite as athletic but both play with a great motor with chips on there shoulders.

T RexOladipo is a good comparison for Rozier. I think Oladipo should start at PG. Either Payton or Vucivic needs to come off the bench if that team is ever going to improve.
Avery Bradley supposedly spent the summer working on his ball handling, and since he’s facing Huge pressure for his starting spot and minutes, I think he’s going to show a lot more dribble-driving and back-door cuts this year. He’s off to an epic start in preseason, but that was against Euro teams.

King CaluchaParticipantThat’s a good ceiling for him. He could be Bradley with solid penetration. Absolutely great return for a non-lottery pick, but not what I’d call "dominating".

T RexHe’s stronger than Bradley, and he just might be a better defender in part because of it. Some variation of post-injury DRose, with better defense and intangibles. That’s pretty close to dominant, as far as upside.

festar35ParticipantI still like the bigs from this draft, but i think as a whole it is well rounded.
I think Towns, Okafor, Porzingis, Turner and Portis are all going to be solid starters at least with Porzingis and Turner being the biggest unknowns as far as ceiling. They both have that 3-ball and shot blocking ability I really like them both and hope they grow with there franchises to get a bit of Pacer v Knicks rivalry going.
Johnson seems like the best wing prospect with guys like Hezonja, Booker and Vaughn looking like they will be nice scorers for their teams as 6th men or starters. Winslow has nice two-way potential, but I still see him more as an Ariza (I dont mean it negatively).
Mudiay looks like a nice pure PG prospect and Russell a nice combo guard. Payne is a wildcard, he looks nice so far.
Heaps of role players in this draft who will make and stay on rosters for a long time.
