NorthernLights666ParticipantLOL, I hope you’re not joking, that’s how you draft the wrong players, you fall in love with highlights, only youngsters and hypers say watching highights is a good way to evaluate players, they must not have the patience to sit down and actually watch games, welcome to 99% of the people on here.

DanEboyParticipantI could make myself look draftable through youtube. No GM in their right mind would even consider paying a guy millions without seeing if he actually even exists.
I am breaking out my Jordan Jammer tomorrow and do some windmills.

quinceyhodgesi agree.. no im not saying i would i was just proving a pioint to mikenike that you canty just go by youtube clips and think that a guy is a sure thing and the chance of the guy being the best prospect is no lower then 100%

esperanzafleet69Participanthahahahahhahaha great example of how kwame brown was the number 1 pick…

C.C._OkekeParticipantkwame brown was scouted in person
players are hyped up and
then brought in for private workoutssome players “dodge” workouts
come draft time and so all you have to go off of is college resumes“The much anticipated workout between Brandon Roy and Rudy Gay scheduled for June 2nd never transpired. Both Roy and Gay made it to Charlotte and even went through some brief conditioning drills, but after 15 minutes Roy decided to quit, citing that he was not feeling well. The Bobcats were obviously disappointed, as everyone knows the emphasis that Head Coach and GM Bernie Bickerstaff puts on competitiveness.
Plenty of noise was already made about this workout before it was even conducted, as the Bobcats were hoping to have Adam Morrison in with Roy and Gay as well, but Morrison could not attend due to prior marketing obligations and the fact that he did not want to end up making two trips back and forth from the West Coast to the East Coast for the Bobcats workout and then the Orlando pre-draft camp physicals and measurements.
What Roy suffered through is apparently exactly what Morrison wanted to avoid, as the three hour time zone difference between the East and West coast and waking up at 7 AM for a workout (4 AM Pacific) likely had everything to do with the way Roy felt when he started working out. Roy’s camp told us that the rumors that are swirling about him dodging Morrison are “nonsense” and that both players have “great respect for each other and would gladly play against one another if the agents involved would be finally able to get something done.” Roy’s AAU coach Lou Hobson told us that what happened with his former player in Charlotte was a “fatigue issue,” and that “no one should be forced to fly cross country late at night and have to wake up just a few hours later for such an important workout.”

C.C._OkekeParticipantTyrus Thomas Refusing Competitive Workouts?
As of right now, it appears that Tyrus Thomas will not be working out competitively against anyone in any workout for a team drafting outside the top 3, and will not be working out for any teams period outside the top 3. From what we’ve been told, much like what happened with Gerald Green last year, teams are threatening to take a stand and not draft him if he continues to refuse to work out for them, or if he refuses to go up against anyone but the coaching staff. Thomas was reportedly seen out on the town in Miami this past weekend and apparently is telling anyone who is willing to listen that he is guaranteed to be drafted #2 by the Chicago Bulls. Right now, the Bulls have a workout set on June 19th featuring J.J. Redick, Rudy Gay and Adam Morrison, with the last spot being saved for Thomas. It will be very interesting to see whether he is advised to attend that workout, and what the fallout of that decision might be.

NashyMingParticipantEveryone looks good on highlights, or else it won’t be a highlight clip.
Highlights only show what the player can do at his best moment. There are a lot more stuffs to see when the player is not at his best. How the player handle bad call or bad situation (body language)? You cannot see if a player playing with heart and hustle all the time. A player would make nearly every shot in the highlight, in reality, his shot might be broken and shooting at 30%.
Highlight is only good for watching and not too useful for player evaluation.

C.C._OkekeParticipant[Rod] Thorn could only go off of the tapes of Jordan he’d watched in Dean Smith’s office in Chapel Hill several months before the draft.
“Back then, you didn’t work guys out,” he said. “We never worked Michael out. But I was very good friends with Dean, and every year, I’d go down to North Carolina for two or three days and he would let me watch tapes of all the ACC players. That’s how I scouted the entire league. Dean thought Michael would be a really good pro – a better pro player than a college player.”
After the tape sessions, Thorn went back to Chicago thinking he would draft Jordan. But if Jordan was gone, his plan was to take another Tar Heel player, forward Sam Perkins. Before making it final, Thorn decided to attend the SEC Tournament to get a first-hand look at Auburn’s Charles Barkley.
“Alabama threw a zone at Charles and he had six points, fouled out and played an awful game. He couldn’t make an outside shot,” Thorn said. “So I left there thinking, ‘How is this guy ever going to be a big-time player in pro ball? He’s just too small to do what he was doing in college in the NBA.'”
Twenty-five years later, Thorn laughed at his projection.
“So, going into the draft, we determined that we were going to take Michael, unless somebody went brain dead and let (Hakeem) Olajuwon come down to us,” he said. “And if Michael didn’t get to us, then we would have taken Perkins over Barkley, which would have been a mistake.”

C.C._OkekeParticipantI agree you have to watch the player play an entire game
I think you go with athleticsm/strength, offensive awareness, shooting, and intangibles

darkman97ParticipantBut I think you can get a good feel for how a high school player plays though a clip if you are scouting for a college. But even then you should pay attention to see if these were clips from one game or a bunch of different games. Plus this should only be used to determine if you would like to see the particular player in person or not. So clips are very useful but shouldn’t be the main factor in choosing someone especially for the NBA.

RUDEBOYIf you have followed basketball and played it as much as i have..You can see rather or not a certain player has it…I can remember telling my friends after watching Illinois play a few years ago..I said watch out for that Deron Williams kid..That was when he & Dee Brown were both sophomores and everyone was saying Brown was the better player..I wrote on this site back in late november that Cousins would be a top 3 pick..Guys on here said i was crazy..Now almost everyone agrees that he’ll be top 3, maybe number 2.Watching highlights is seeing the best plays…But if you’re trying to evaluate someone’s talent..You have to watch him the whole game…Watch how he treats his team mates when they make a mistake..See how he reacts when his team is down..See how calm he is when things get hectic

knicksfreakParticipantHighlight films are definitely not a decision maker for drafting someone but they’re also not a bad place to start. If someone impresses on a highlight film then they should be properly scouted after drawing that initial interest.
As far as the NBA owner thing, I highly doubt the Maloof brothers saw many/ if any games of Tyreke before they gave the green light to draft him.
NBA owners have to trust the people they hire to run their scouting divisions.

quinceyhodgesmmmmm i dont fully agree. ..as far as the maloofs or any other owner i can understand because its not there job to go see the players. thats what they pay people for. as far as clips or highlights any athletic guy can put together clips of highlights and look very very good. sometimes you can look at it and become interested and then check them out but sometimes you cant tell if a guy has talent or not. look at perry jones. his aau highlight tape makes hmm look like a sure thing and a player who is probably leading his hs to a title while putting up 40 a game. then you go watch his game and you learn that his team is 17-10 and he’s averaging less then 12 ppg while not seeing a bunch of double or tiple teams ( even thought that shouldnt matter because most if not all hs stars see that). and i heard the maloofs went and watched him in work outs. highligh films do come in handy if you have already heard how good a player is and they are playing good comp. but its only a starting point
