EspressoParticipantI had a thread long time ago where I said if Lebron wanted to play in the mold of Magic Johnson, as in a 22-8rebs-11ast, he would be able to do so. Even easier for Lebron, would be to replicate Kobe Brayant, shooting 27 shots a game and scoring 35ppg on 45fg%. However, I dont think Lebron could replicate MJ.
Back to the topic, I believe If Steve Nash would’ve forced shots like Curry, more specifically the 3 pt shooting…. he wouldve been able to succesfully play like Curry… in the 23ppg-9apg-4rpg mold

BornaskulParticipantNash was a very good 3p shooter, but he isn’t one of the 3 or even 5 best 3p shooters ever.
He had a very good percentage because he was smart and took good looks.
Those shots Curry forces are bad shots for most of the league but not for him. If he continues shooting this many 3 pointers he will break the record as we all know.
Nash could’ve probably scored 23 but it would be on a much worse fg%.
Just because 2 players have similiar statlines doesn’t mean their effect on the team would be the same.
Nash played like he played to make his team better, and to use his strongest weapon- passing.Curry also plays to his strengths and look they won the title.

EspressoParticipantNash wasnt only a good 3pt shooter, he is one of the best shooters of all times and could arguably crack the top 5.
He didnt have good % because he took smart, good looks. He was a master off the dribble shooter and could come full speed and stop on dime from downton, he was simply put a consertative sniper.
Nash wouldve been able to score 23ppg on the same %s as Curry, or very close to it. Just look at his numbers and notice his regular over .50FG%, peek season being a ridiculous 53FG%. That average wouldve dropped to numbers like Curry.
Players play to their benefit and even mental makeup, Lebron doesnt pass all the time because he is a better/ more capable scorer than Magic. Nash didnt shoot so much because he was EVEN better at passing, and that is not doging his shooting, he just happened to be better at passing.
If he actually look for his shot the way a lot of PGs do today, he would’ve been capable to be a different player.

he_gets_bucketsParticipantForcing up more 3’s would detract from what he did best, create for others
Maybe he COULD have done what Curry did, which even then I’m not sure if Nash could hit some of the off the dribble 3’s Curry does, he was best as a primary facilitator shooting only when he needed to and creating great looks for others.

T RexNash played before analytics took over. Looking for your own shot as a point guard was just bad manners.

NBAjunkie81Participanthad similar stats… For example, Nash’s 2006 team won 61 games & just like Curry’s Warriors, finished 1st in the NBA in scoring w/ a 110 ppg avg. Curry’s 2015 Warriors were 15th allowing 99.9 ppg while Nash’s Suns were 18th allowing 102.1 ppg in 2006…
I was expecting to laugh at this but it was closer than I thought… Nash’s lifetime averages (rounded) are roughtly 15 ppg & 8 apg… w/ a 49% FG% & 42.8% 3pt% – but in Nash’s 2 MVP years which include that 2006 team – Nash averaged 17.1 ppg & 11.0 assists w/ a 50.8% FG% & a 43.6% 3pt% –
the Percentages are Very close to Curry’s #’s – the Points & assists even out – Curry scores more whereas Nash’s 60 win Suns teams under Mike D’Antoni depended on Nash running the offense & moving that ball & Nash was Amazing at it…
Here are Curry’s #’s career 20.9 ppg & 6.9 assists w/ a 47.1% FG% & a 44.0 3pt% – And Curry’s #’s for Golden State’s 67 win 2015 Championship campaign…23.8 ppg & 7.7 assist which wqas actually down from his 2014 season of 24.0 ppg & 8.5apg but Curry’s FG% went up in 2015.. He was incredibly efficient while shooting 48.7% FG% & 44.3% 3pt% – but once again Very similar to Nash….
In the playoffs however, Curry really stepped up his scoring in 2015: 28.3 ppg & 6.4 apg w/ 45.6 FG% & 42.2 3pt% – I just took Nash’s best 3 seasons w/ the Suns under D’Antonio & rounded Nashe’s #’s are basically 20 ppg & 10 apg w/ a 50% FG% & a 40% 3pt% – again the difference in Assists really balances out the point differential…
This was closer than I thought, but the post stated that "Nash could have been Curry if he chose to.." I disagree w/ that statement.. Whether we like it or not the NBA playoff become a ruthless half court grind which makes the ability to score Skyrocket as an Assett.. We ALL see this in the playoffs, teams play a relatively free flowing game for 45+ minutes but then the Last 2 or 3 minutes become So taught w/ stress & tension & the Refs pocket their whistles – making it SO difficult to score… The team that has One man they can throw the ball to & go get a bucket in "Crunch" time is crazy Valuable b/c that team usualy wins….
And that is the difference between Curry & Nash & really Curry & a lot of players… Look at their respect 3 pt%’s – Nash was a great shooter but Curry was a Great THREE point shooter & he has range out to almost 28 feet – this is Insanely valuable… Also, Curry can create his own shot off the dribble, Steve Nash could NOT…
fans will say that Phoenix was unlucky in the playoffs always getting the tough teams but the truth is the Suns did Not have a guy who could go get them a bucket when the game slowed to a crawl in the playoff & the Warriors do – they have Curry & he can get that open look w/ a 25 foot 3 point shot or he can break his man down off the dribble & drive to the cup…
Steve Nash was a Star player, a perrenial All Star & a Hall of Famer. Curry – b/c he is one of those Incredibly rare players who can create an Open look Anywhere & Anytime, that makes him a Super Star… & his Ring proves it…

daggers818ParticipantNBAJunkie81 — I think you make an incredibly strong point about crunch-time effectiveness and the need to have at least one player capable of creating their own shot to score against insane defense in these big moments. Those are the true super-stars imo and there’s really not many capable (or willing to step up). I’ve been saying for a long time, like you, that it’s those teams with those players that win.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantI don’t think so. Nash was a great shooter in his own right but didn’t have curry’s range or incredibly quick release. The reason nash was able to shoot such high percentages was because he was such a selective shooter. If he had taken the types of shots curry does, his percentages would not have been nearly as good.

I.C.Y.U.NV.MEParticipantWhen you say “play like”, I take it more literal than just analytics and percentages. I believe Nash simply wasn’t creative enough to “play like” Curry. Nash was a creative passer, but that’s about it. He is nowhere near as creative with the dribble as Curry. Curry uses his dribble to straight ice defenders while Nash needs screen after screen. Nash was a great shooter, but the difficulty on his shots are a lot lower than Curry’s.

I.C.Y.U.NV.MEParticipantWhat does that have to do with anything? I said Nash is less creative WITH HIS DRIBBLE. Don’t be a selective reader bro lol. Have you seen Nash be nearly as effective as Curry with iso dribble moves? Nah, me either.

PulseGlazerParticipantPeople just consistently fail to understand how amazing Curry’s shooting is. It isn’t just the range, the handle, willingness to pass, or the accuracy, it’s all of that and he does it on the move off the dribble. When he’s AT ALL on from long range, he feels like a video game on cheat mode.
