SwatLakeCityParticipantMore and more I am seeing people put Brandon Knight as Utah’s pick either at 6 or 12. I am perfectly fine with this and I am not against drafting Brandon Knight but I just think that Utah could get more value with where they pick if they do not pick a point guard this year but wait until 2012.
Why: Reason#1: There are 4 point guard in this draft that are potential lottery picks but only one of them is a potential top 3 pick: Kyrie Irving, Kemba Walker, Brandon Knight, and Jimmer Freddette. In 2012 though there are 3 point gaurds who are also lottery picks and I personally think they all have better futures in the NBA than 3 of the point guards already listed (Knight, Walker, and Freddette): Myck Kabongo, Marquis Teague, and Kendall Marshall. Two of them would be great PG’s that fit in Utah passing offense very well: Kabongo and Marshall.
Reason #2: Utah has the Warriors pick next year which is top 7 protected. All 3 of those point guards are expected to be available past the 7th pick.
Reason #3: Harris is only 28 years old so he still has 1 or 2 years left in his prime before he starts to dwindle down meaning that Utah still has one more year to find another point guard in which they can invest their future in.
Reason #4: Harris’ contract does not come off the books until after the 2012-2013 season which would be Kabongo, Marshall, and Teague’s rookie year. So Utah will still have Harris to mentor either Kabongo or Marshall when they come into the league.
Like I said before I really think that Kabongo, Marshall, and Teague all have a brighter future in the NBA than Walker, Knight, and Freddette do. I really think Utah would be better off if they do not select a PG this year but wait until the 2012 draft to do so. They can go for a SF and a SG this year.
What do you guys think, would it be smart for Utah to wait and select their PG in the 2012 draft instead of doing it immediately in this year’s upcoming draft?

Leftovers16ParticipantHarris is ONLY 28…. if youre 28 and havent proven nothing yet that means uh your just not a good player…

i’m jus so offendedParticipantI think so too, in my mock I have them taking Jonas with their first pick and Burks with their 2nd. Now that’s just based on my personal opinion, Burks will probably go higher. I think Minnesota should do the same regardless if Kyrie is there or not. Take Kanter or a wing because what if Rubio does come over, who are you going to trade? and are you going to get proper value for either? Might as well get a nice big man prospect and if Rubio stays another year and Spain and/or refuses to come to Minny, there are really nice PG prospects next year

i’m jus so offendedParticipanthahahaha and yeah Harris is never going to live up to the one year he was an All-Star. He could be a nice sixth man i think, not with that contract tho

SwatLakeCityParticipantYeah he’s not a good player, he’s an average Point Guard, but you don’t need a great PG to be good in this league. An average one is just fine. Look at Orlando and LA Lakers. They have average point guards yet they are one of the top teams in the league. Grant it they do have two of leagues best players in Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard but their are still a ton of playoff teams that have just average point guards and still make the playoffs. Houston, Philly, Indy, Hawks, Denver, Portland, Memphis (need I go on?) These are all potential playoff teams this year. No, they do not have a shot at winning it all but that doesn’t mean they aren’t good teams. Utah can get by with Harris for now until his contract is up. And once his contract is up they can select Kabongo or Marshall and be set for the future. They will have a PG that has a better future then 3 of the point guards in this draft’s lottery and chances are this same PG will be one of the up and coming PG’s in 2 years. So not only would Utah be in contention for a playoff spot but they would also get one of the top 4 seeds and possibly compete for a title. All this could happen if they wait until 2012 to get their PG. This is reason #5

Ahkasi ClayParticipantHarris is not the answer, but does have value in a trade.
I am not sure there is a franchise PG in this years draft.
I still would like to see them make a trade for Rubio!! (but that is just the fanboy in me)!

B FreeParticipantHarris was put in a bad situation in NJ and for some reason was never considered the man there, but to say he never proved anything is a stretch he has had some good seasons including 21 pts 7ast and a career 2.3 to 1 AST/TO ratio he needs players around him that can spread the floor and rebound and shouldn’t be the first option.

SwatLakeCityParticipantExactly, SakitSaPuwit, there is only one franchise PG in this draft and its Kyrie Irving, but unless Utah gets a top 3 pick they won’t be able to get him, but in 2012 there will be 3 franchise PG’s and 2 of them are perfect for Utah’s offense. (reason#6) They can get by with Harris for now until 2012.
And this isn’t Minnesota, this is Utah (I don’t know why you guys keep talking about Minnesota and Rubio)

inukawaii8ParticipantI agree with you to some extent, but you can say that about any draft tho. next year, there are several good SF. does that mean utah doesnt draft a SF this year too and wait till next year? I think its something to think about, but if you are in position to draft a player who can contribute and fit into your system. you get him now. dont think about the possibilities of next year.

SwatLakeCityParticipant^^^Good point, but like I said before there are two point gaurds in this year’s lottery that fit Utah’s system. Irving and Knight. Unless Utah gets a top 3 pick then they will not get Irving. (Chances are Utah picks 4-6 and 12th. Now Utah could still get Knight with the 6th pick but why pick him when you can still pick Kabongo or Marshall next year? Utah can get by with Harris for now. Those SF in 2012 are great players and would be great picks but Utah’s lottery pick next year will be in 8-14 range (since it is top 7 protected) which means that they don’t have a good chance at landing one of those top SF’s next year. And besides AK’s contract is off the books this offseason. So SF absolutely has to be on their list for this year’s draft. The 3 PG’s though that I listed have a good chance of being picked in the 8-14 range which is right where Utah will be picking in 2012. Why pick an average one now when you can wait till next year and get a better one then? (very likely franchise one)
Also said earlier in this thread, Harris succeeds when he is not the #1 option but has great role players around him. Utah can get those role in this draft because this draft is full of them, and then in 2012 they can get a better PG than Harris is (very likely a franchise one) and be set for a championship run. Like I said before Utah can get by now with Harris as their PG by just getting role players in this draft and then when Harris’ contract is up and he has past his prime then Utah can get their franchise PG in Kabongo or Marshall. Why select an average PG now like Knight when you can wait and realistically get a better PG in 2012? I really think the best thing for Utah to do is get a SF and a SG, and then wait and select their PG in 2012.

Real Talk Real TrophiesParticipantI think knight has the work ethic and skills to become a top flight pg in the nba. I really like kabongo though, dude is sick wit it.

sheltwon3ParticipantKnight to me is the real deal. Harris is injury prone so I think it would be good for them to have a young player already developing. Knight would work great for them. I also think they need to take a sg or sf with their other pick. They also need to see about moving one of their big men.
