See, I wasn’t quite old enough to appreciate the amazing combination of massiveness and skill that Yao brought to the table. He was a funny guy, he had that endearing huge-man awkwardness, and he was really an incredibly intriguing player to watch. Basketball lost him too soon.

    Samsies. 🙁

But stop making me feel sad, it’s a bright sunny day outside and I will have none of this depressing mumbo jumbo today.

Too bad Yao Ming didn’t know how to dominate.

That is not true. I believe he took the torch over being best big man in the game from Shaq before he got injured again. The guy had post moves and could shoot with range.

Its interesting to think how far and away Yao would be the best center in the league. 7’5 who can net you 21-10-and 2 blocks a night with above average passing and perimeter shot. Not to mention the cultural phenomenon.

I wish I knew. It will not Bargnani. Probably Shump City or something of that nature.

Its funny how the ppg can be decieving….Yao ming avg a quiet 20ppg. That doesn’t mean he was dominate. Andrea Bargani avg. 21 ….but that doesn’t mean he was dominate? no. Finally, has he ever made ALL NBA first team, nope. Again, numbers are decieving.

As for Yao avg. 20 and 10… he did that on playing 55 games that season(07-08). If you check the stats during his 82 game playing season he was close back in his second season where he avg only 9.

Finally, lets not forget the overrated all star games appearances. What other players were deserving to be a All star (let alone starter) every year when they are playing on avg 55 games a season. He has China to thank for that. Finally, he did have a cultural impact on the NBA, but let’s be honest he was overrated

He was not a player that put up empty stats.

Paul Pierce never made an All-NBA 1st team either, so there goes that argument.

The rebounds are a little surprising, sure, but Houston was regularly one of the best defenses in the league during their time with Yao Ming, regularly in the top 5 in defensive efficiency and 5-10 points better per 100 possessions since he arrived in 2002-03. You can’t ignore one side of the court just because Yao’s offensive game was “dominate” to your standards. What’s dominant to your standards anyway?

Finally, it’s deceiving. Spell check, man.

Yao was just reaching his full potential when the started to be dodged by injuries, he was a legit 20 plus ppg player before you consider the mismatches his size causes on both ends of the court. Sad to think that Yao is still only 32 but his NBA career was effectively over 4 years ago. If he had stayed sound, he could have been a legit great big man who still had several more seasons ahead of him.

I miss him as a player and a cultral icon.

Every now and then I stumble across his page on basketball-reference. He gives me the same depression Grant Hill and Penny did a decade earlier, though he was a cultural icon to go with his unique game for a giant in the NBA. It’s too bad his career ended early. He was a great poster boy for the NBA while he was here.

On another weird note, how many NBA players ended their careers in China before Yao Ming came along? Not blaming him for it. U.S-born superstars have had a huge impact in China in terms of popularizing the game. Just a weird coincidence though.

Crazy how for a season or two Yao was the best FT shooter on the team and would shoot the teams technical foul shots.

Not saying you’re wrong but I can’t think of any US-born superstars that ended their careers in China before Yao came along.

It does suck that his career ended too short and some of you missed seeing his ability but IMO Alonzo Mourning and Brad Daugherty were just as good if not better, had their careers ruined in their prime and hardly ever get remembered.
