llperezthe 1998-99 season went rhough a lockout that ended january 23rd, which is approximately half of most NBA seasons. The league immediately tried to salvage the season and regualr season games began just 11 days later. No time at all for preseason, trades, coaches to insert plans. Add in the fact that the league crammed 50 games in with teams playing about 5 times a week all season leaving no practice time for teams to make adjustments. It really felt like a weak. Many players showed up out of shape. There wasnt enough time to really establish who were the best teams. The knicks finished 8th in the east and went to the finals becasue records were only slightly indicative of who teams were in such a hurried and rushed season.
My point is it just wasnt very fun. I guess even a bad nba season is better then no season. But i really hope we dont have to go through that crap again.

llperezthat was a crazy season for the lakers. Del harris was fired from head coaching duties after starting 6-6 and Kurt Rambis took his place. The lakers signed free agent dennis rodman to a contract a couple weeks into the season and he was his usual nutty self. The lakers traded all-star eddie jones and starting pf elden campbell to the hornets for glen rice at the trade deadline(about 50 days after the season started). Kobe was emerging as a star and he and shaq were beginging their whole headbutting thing. All kinds of crazy stuff in about 3 months went down that year in LA.

Tim49461ParticipantDoes anyone else feel like if it were a shortned season it would be the perfect time to test out the short season players were calling for?
Alot of people and players were complaining about the length of the season trying to make it down to 50 games. Saying it would increase competitiveness and provide less injuries.
I feel like the playoffs would exactly benefit from this. More Energy less injured players.

I May Be WrongParticipantso I can’t picture it honestly but you have changed my mind llperez. See, my mindset was that even if they get into January to make a deal for example, I thought they would just push the NBA season into midsummer. I thought they would still have a shortened season but I would have gave the players a month off to get ready. So if an agreement was made in January, I would start the NBA season in Feb. and work a 50 game schedule and maybe run it til August.
but if this is how the NBA was in 1998 lockout, then I honestly believe we’d be better off just cancelling it all and waiting til next season because there is no way players would be ready in 11 days. And 5 games a week, sheesh! thats too much on the players.

llperezit would kinda suck for older teams losing out on a season. But at the same time, older guys could really use a year off assuming they take care of themsleves. It wouldnt surprise me if 1 year off actually helped rejuvenate some of the veterans around the league.

aamir543ParticipantIf you ask me, Kobe could use as much rest as possible. Do you know why MJ was putting up 28 a game at age 35? Because those two years off helped tremendously. Kobe is only a months worth of minutes away from passing MJ in total career minutes including the playoffs, and Kobe is only 32! He needs some time to rejuvenate himself, because I still fell that he can put up 23 points a game for the next three seasons.
One thing that alarms me is that he didn’t even practice last season, and he also admitted thathis right knee has very little cartilage left in his right knee.

Memphis MadnessParticipantAamir,
Great point! If the NBA locks out then his could be Kobe’s minor league baseball year!
When Jordan retired after the 1993 championship it was his 9th year in the league and he had basically
played 3 years straight if you count the Dream Team summer. So he took a year and a half off, and after the loss in 1995
he comes back and wins 3 straight titles. His brilliant stretch after his comeback turned him into the best ever. But I really think he
needed that retirement year to rest and refocus.0 - Posted on: Thu, 06/30/2011 - 5:25pm #560611

JoeWolf1I did, and I can say that it was the worst season of pro basketball I’ve ever watched, but not for the obvious reason of less team practice, no training camps, etc. It was the first year of the post Jordan era in Chicago, and As a Bulls fan, I had the privelage to see Chicago suit up Dickey Simpkins as their starting PF.
