There are more reports about the Kings asking about Josh Smith again, and they also talk about how Rondo is someone the Kings also like and he and Smith would like to be on the same team.  Do you think it could happen, what would the teams be asking for, I think Detroit are happy with saving money and Boston wants young players and picks.

In this trade idea, Detroit get two players with ending deals, Thompson is a good backup player for Drummond and Monroe, if he stays, plus Bass can hit medium-range shots and Anthony can play defense.  The Celtics get a pick from Sacramento plus two players who were high picks but have done little so far, and could turn things around quickly.

To Sacramento: Rajon Rondo, Josh Smith

To Boston: Ben McLemore, Derrick Williams, Jason Terry, 1st round pick from Kings

To Detroit: Jason Thompson, Brandon Bass, Joel Anthony

Both teams not called the Kings lose out big time.

Boston trade away their star player, a solid PF for an unproven SG, a streaky player with not set position and a past-his-prime undersized shooting guard.  The pick likely won’t be in the top 10 (or possibly the lottery) because the Kings improve that much because of this trade.

Detroit trade away a player on a horrible contract who, last season, didn’t fit with the rest of the team.  This would be considered good, if they didn’t get such a poor return.  Two decent power forwards and a centre who was never really great to start with aren’t what a player like Smith is even close to being worth.  The Pistons will likely only trade Smith for shooters or draft picks, they have a logjam up front as it is.

I think Detroit would have a hard time giving smith away for free!

Boston for sure would need to get an additional 1st round pick for this minimum. Rondo is still a top 10 point guard when healthy and can transform a team.

In Stein’s report, he states that the Kings were originally looking to send a package that featured Jason Thompson coupled with the Pistons’ choice of Jason Terry or Derrick Williams. If a deal is to be reached, Thompson or Williams is likely to still be involved. However, since no agreement was reached with that package in June, there’s a chance that Sacramento could either alter their package to send to Detroit or potentially bring in a third team to ensure a deal getting done.

Why would McLemore have to be traded? It’s not like the Pistons have any leverage. They are trying their hardest to dump Smith and everyone knows it.

I don’t imagine the Kings will be willing to trade the necessary pieces to get Rajon Rondo. I’d imagine Rondo would cost them DeMarcus Cousins, Rudy Gay, Ben McLemore, and/or Nik Stauskas to start with along with picks.

You seriously think Rondo is worth all that? No way they include Cousins in any deal.

I don’t think Rondo is worth all that, but The Celtics would undoubtedly want at least one of the players I listed or some combination of them. For example the Celtics may straight up trade Rondo for Cousins or Gay or they might go for a combination like Stauskas, McLemore, and a pick.

I wasn’t suggesting they’d acquire everyone I listed for Rondo hence the and/or.

Ok that’s good to know, I apologize for my somewhat brash response. But to trade away cousins or rondo would be a lateral move for them if they got super lucky and rondo resigns long term and starts playing the best ball of his career. Cousins is the linchpin for the kings going forward and is indespensable. And Rudy gay is about as appetizing In a trade as blood sausage flavored ice cream. I could see stauskas being involved tho, at the pistons or celtics urging. He would be a great fit for either team and the kings already have mclemore, who has underwhelmed but still has great potential. The stauskas pick was puzzling but could pay immediate dividends without him ever suiting up in a kings uni. I like stauskas more long term, but I love the thought of rondo, anybody, gay, smith and boogie in the starting five. I would have liked to have seen the kings try n get some value from Isaiah Thomas via sign and trade, but the market for Thomas was not what it should have been due to the influx of young talented PGs in the league, the exaggerated mellowdrama of this free agency season keeping teams tentative, and sacramentos lack of success making ppl believe that his stats were inflated. Phoenix was one of the last places I thought he would end up

Okay fair enough haha, I was gonna say that’s a huge package for just Rondo. I can see the kings offering Gay and one of Mclemore/Stauskas but I think Cousins is pretty much untouchable.

I’m 100% certain that Ainge would take Cousins straight up for Rondo… So a starting point of Gay/Cousins/McLemore/etc etc is way overkill

I didn’t, for the second time, say that it would take Cousins, Gay, Stauskas, and McLemore for a starting point. I said it would take either Cousins, Gay, Stauskas, or McLemore or possibly Stauskas and McLemore for a starting point to acquire Rondo.

In no way did I say it would take all those guys. I imagine Cousins or Gay straight up would be sufficient. Then perhaps the Celtics would want Stauskas and McLemore seeing Rondo as being worth both. I did not say all of these guys…I was saying at least one of them and possibly picks as well.

I see what you are saying, but there is no way that Rudy Gay is enough of a starting point for the Celtics to trade Rondo.  Cousins straight up would be enough I think, or a combo of McLemore, Stauskas and a pick to get the conversation started, but Ainge would hang up the phone in two seconds if the initial offer was Gay or Rondo.

Prolly shoulda kept your imagination to yourself and gone about this pragmatically.  That’s one of the more diluted posts I’ve seen in a while. If those pieces were necessary to get the ball rolling with trade talks between the celtics and kings, the ball wouldn’t get rolling.  I believe rondo is being undervalued by most due to his perpetual miscontent, but at his highest value point in his career, he never garnered that much value in a trade scenario.  If the kings put cousins on the block (which is the last thing that they’re looking to do right now), they’d be jut to ask for rondo and a first round pick. Atleast.

This would be addition by subtraction for Detroit, so clearing salary is all that’s important. If they can get Mclemore great, but I doubt that’s a sticking point. If Smith, Monroe, and Drummond are all on the same team again next year, there could be some serious locker room problems.

Mclemore, Williams, and 2(protected) firsts would be good value for Rondo (considering he’s on the last year of his contract).Cousins is basicaly untouchable as far as the Kings are concerned, so they arent going to trade him for 1 year of Rondo. And for Smith I think something like Landry, Terry , and McCallum would get it done, That helps both teams, and Detroit gets out of a bad contract.

The Kings have a trade exception from the Thomas move to Phoenix so could acquire Smith without having to send back so much salary to Detroit, that would appeal to SVG and the deal has been discussed on ESPN.

The Kings would need to be creative to try and make a deal for Rondo and I do wonder if they have the right pieces.

The Kings won’t have to give up much to get Smith, Hawks just want him gone.  Getting Rondo will be a bit tougher, but I think it could be done.  I would think a starting point would be Stauskas, McLemore, Williams, Terry and 2 first round picks.  Kings have no shooting guards, so you won’t be able to get both players.  I would take Stauskas, Williams, Terry and 2 first round picks.  Maybe Danny wants McLemore, but I would want Stauskas.

That’s where Josh Smith comes in, one of Rondo’s best friends and a player he has always wanted to play with.  I’m sure he won’t sign a contract extension, but the Kings would have a team that has a chance at becoming a contender.  If they make the playoffs and offer Rondo a big deal, I think he resigns.  Sure its a risk, but a lineup with Cousins, Gay, Smith and Rondo means its a risk worth taking.  Now giving up Stauskas or McLemore, Williams, Terry and 2 first round picks Sounds like a lot, it’s not.  Those firsts would be late, those not have a ton of value.  So I don’t think trading McLemore or Stauskas and two late first rounder’s is a lot.

Man I wouldn’t mind the pistons including a 2nd rounder that flexibility is so valuable for Sacramento I think it’s a nice move if they can get Rondo that’s 4 of 5 in your starting lineup with all star talent. Can’t remember sac ever having that opportunity not to mention B Mac with his potential. Add some smart bench pieces and that could be a contender down the road with Malone coaching
