Try on defense before I get into the lane.

Hey guys, I have been losing to my friend 1 on 1 alot recently because he can pretty much post me up at will and get easy buckets that way. We are both not very big guys, but he has about 2 inches and 40 pounds on me. I am quicker than him and am a very good and tenacious defender, but I can stop him from posting me up most of the time. Any tips on what to do to stop him from posting up or tips on how to defend him when he posts me up? Thanks

One on one, not really.  Fronting the post is a valid option when playing an organized game, the help side defender will be aware of your strategy and adjust defensively.

The best advice for one on one, since you have to stay between him and the bucker, is try to slap the ball out of his hands when he puts it on the floor.

Pull the chair or fake an injury.  That’s what McDunkin would do.

Force him to pick the ball up early or pull the chair… Never do the same thing back to back…  Also, another thing I notice players do is trying to fight power with power and normally get OVERpowered…  Give yourself enough space to go and block the shot up top…  Don’t allow him to get into your body EVER…

Hell since its 1 vs. 1 foul dude…  He will either stop posting you up as much or stop playing you…  I would say he more incline to stop posting you up…  Talk ish like he trash too that he can only post up…  Try to get a mental advantage…  It might not work for the whole game but enough for you to win…  Get me???

In a one on one game you can’t really stop somebody from posting up you just have to counter it with anticipation skills.  If he’s right handed and postes with his left shoulder then overplay him to that side and try and force him to shoot over his right shoulder instead of his left shoulder.

You also got to notice the patterns he uses when dribbling everybody uses patters.  You got to try and make it hard for him when he’s dribbling by poking at the ball.

Also use leverage to your advantage.  Play him strong when he’s trying to go into his move, then when he goes to shoot back off and the sudden release of pressure will throw him off.  You can use this vice versa.  Let him get position and think he has you, then when he goes to shoot use leverage to apple force on his back with your chest while keeping your arms straight up and that should throw off his shot too without falling.

And just take notice to what moves he likes to use.  I don’t know if you got a good vertical or not but I’m short and always played well in the post because I can’t get off my feet fast and anticipate the opponents shot.  You can’t really block hooks from the the shoulder but you can slip inside more if you know he’s about to shoot the hook and get in better position to get a hand on it.

And just use your quickness to your advantage.  Make sure your defense is unpredicatable in how you play him.  Don’t always attempt to defend the same way mix it up.

Get low and use your leverag sort of how Dennis Rodamn use to play Shaq… Also it would be a good idea to play the ball and slap at it when given the opportunity…

This would never work on me haha.

I’ll give you the 100% best way to do it Jeff. Try during the whole possession. If you do that then I get tired from working hard to get by you. Then when I’m tired I settle for jump shots.

EDIT: Great post by the guy above me too.

It works on some players…  Not all, just like trying to tire him out won’t work on every player…  It’s not about getting him completely off his game either…  You just need a few empty possessions to give you more opportunities to rebound and score…  Eventually he would get what you trying to do BUT it gave you extra points if you are able to score on him…

Fouling might be the best option as well…  If he’s dominating you like that it’s no way in hell you will check him during a game…  And if you do I hope you decide to foul him instead of giving him free buckets to score…  This isn’t organize basketball where you have 5 fouls and out the game…  Don’t make it obvious fouls try for the ball (Jump or Bump what we say) but eventually he’ll stop posting you up 24/7…  This isn’t a way for either player to get better as well so don’t feel you "cheating" to win…  All you doing is trying to win from what your post originally said…

Let this be your motivation to get into the gym…  I got tired of people pushing me around down there so I got in the wieght room…  Do it as well…  That should be your long term goal…

Get to his spot before he does and make him work for the bucket. Make sure you kill him on O too so he gets tired.

Well, it depends, rather than waste all your energy trying to fight for position with him, let him catch the ball depedning on how deep in the post he is, and what king of midrange shooter he is. If he is really good once he gets it in the post, than you should pester him for position.

Unless you have really good hops, or the entry passer is really bad, don’t front him, even though he only has two inches on you. What you want to do is cheap shot him. It sounds dirty and it is, but if you do it right the refs NEVER call it(Although I’m assuming that you’re playing pickup ball). Try to shove your knee up his a$$, or between his legs. Push him back if he tries to back you down. Just try your best to fight and stay in there with him.

Although you have to adjust on the fly, cause if he’s a lot stronger than you, but he can’t jump, than try to go for the block, or pull the chair as so to speak.

The most useful technique would be to give him room, not enough to get a jumpshot off, but enough to force him to face up. Then, regardless of what block he is on, force him left, use your feet to slide, I’m assuming you’re quicker than him, so that shouldn’t be a problem, just hold your ground and force him sideways and force him to shoot a bad shot.

There are several more ways to defend the post, just find out what works for you in certain situations.

I’m going to assume he won’t cheap shot me (at least I hope so), but other then that, I would love for him to do everything you said. Easy points for me via the jump hook.

If you want to know the story: I’m 2 inches taller, have a longer wingspan and have between 30-40 lbs on him. I’m a bit faster, he’s a bit quicker. I’m way stronger and jump way heigher, he’s a way better shooter, and has way better defensive instincts.

1 on 1 is a big mans game if he is disciplined enough to dribble into the post and put his weight to advantage. There is too much size advantage here for this to be a fair game.

Try this game. 1 on 1 with players starting from the top of the key (maybe a little closer if you guys aren’t threats to shoot from that distance, it should be a distance where if you just pulled up and shot from that point it would be good move, you can also count by twos and threes, so setting up right behind the three point line means you are starting in a scoring position if you have three point range on your J). Each player is allowed only three dribbles in a possession. That is enough to set up a move, but not enough to just back a player down. It is a good game and me and my friends play it sometimes when we don’t have enough for a full court game.

That sounds like a great game, I’m definitely up for that.
