Sewok15ParticipantMichael Qualls just went up a foot above the rim to hammer home the game winning putback jam in overtime to beat the Wildcats. It was an incredible game and if you didn’t watch it I am sure you will be seeing more of that play.
I came away very impressed with James Young who I see as a for sure top 10 pick. He has been playing much better lately and had the big 3 to tie it in OT before the incredible play. I was just as impressed at the end of regulation when he passed out of the double team with time running down to hit Andrew Harrison for the tying 3. With Young and LaVine the SG position is looking pretty strong especially if you consider Exum a 2 as well.
Julius Randle played like a man and did what he does tonight. He finished with 20 and 14 boards in the loss as well. Poythress looked as good as I have seen him and he had a big time two handed baseline jam. He gave UK some much needed punch and energy off the bench.
WCS was nowhere to be found tonight. He was 1-2 from the field with 5 fouls and 0 offensive rebounds. Portis on the other hand had 4 offensive rebounds and Qualls had 3 including the big one at the end he threw back down.
Kentucky looks to be getting better even in the loss. Arkansas looks like a tourney team and the SEC should be very interesting going forward.

drk3351ParticipantA bit off topic but you mentioned Exum and his position. I’m interested to hear what you guys think of what position Exum will play in the pros and also Zach Levine of UCLA. Personally I think Exum is a pg and Levine is a 2. I just think Levine plays better off the ball and he’s tall enough to play the 2 guard.

LA12ParticipantI see both as probably SG’s. Lavine’s a great spot up shooter and extremely athletic for any position.
I’ve said it before, but Exum looks to me kind of like a faster Brandon Roy, maybe not as good of an off the dribble shooter or shooter in general. The rest of him seems very Roy-esque. Creates for himself and others. Good enough ball handling and play making ability to play point, but big enough to play SG. Also Roy was extremely underrated as an athlete, he had a great vertical jump and deceptive speed which wasn’t showcased as much due to his deliberate game. Exum’s a solid athlete too and really quick.

Sewok15ParticipantI don’t see LaVine as a point guard at the NBA level as some have speculated. I don’t think he is a natural playmaker and he plays very well off the ball. Maybe he could do it but I see him best as a SG. He has a really nice stroke and has been incredibly efficent so far. With his great athleticism really all you need is for him to put on some weight and mature. He is listed at 180 right now and he is as skinny as college basketball players get.
I see LaVine as a combination of Klay Thompson and Demar Derozen. Both guys are scoring around 20 a night and I think LaVine has that kind of potential. I don’t think Zach will ever weight 225 like Demar but he could get to Klay’s weight of 205 in a couple years. He isn’t quite the shooter that Thompson is and isn’t quite the athlete Derozen is but he has top 10 NBA SG written all over him.
Exum I haven’t seen enough of but from what I have seen and hear he is more of a point guard than LaVine for sure. He is still considered a combo guard but with his size and ability to get into the paint he is more of a playmaker. I would have to see more of him to determine if he is a legit NBA starting PG prospect but from what I hear he is considered that by many people.

Lafferty DanielParticipantAwesome play by Qualls. Andrew Harrison just stood there looking at the ball and Qualls took advantage.

phila9012ParticipantI haven’t really followed the harrison twins this year, but if Andrew Harrison would have just boxed out it would have gone into a second overtime.

M-EazyParticipantIt was James Young who didn’t box out. Respect to him for taking responsibility in the post game press conference.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantThat play kind of reminds me of the Lorenzo Charles putback dunk in the 1983 title game…..
And Micheal Qualls is one of the most underrated players in the country….

RUDEBOY_ParticipantAfter Qualls dunk,Kentucky was trying to inbound the ball and it gets stuck in the scoreboard…..1st time i’ve ever seen that happen!!!

Sewok15ParticipantThat is the first time I have seen the ball stuck but I had a similar blooper in high school. We were in the same situation down a bucket at the end of the game with about one second left. I was usually our best decision maker and often inbounded the ball. Well this time I went with the baseball throw and it got away from me a bit and hit the rafters in the gym we were playing in. GAME OVER…now we likely weren’t going to win needing a miralce but it was still embarassing throwing a pass that bad.

LA12ParticipantAlways liked James Young’s game, though he did underperform to begin the season. But Calipari only had amazing things to saya about the kid coming into the year. Still think he can be a top ten pick and can make a big impact in the NBA as a scorer.

TarHeelRavenParticipantIt was funny that the announcers were literally talking about how low the scoreboard was and a full-length court pass would be hard because of it. A couple seconds later the ball was thrown and it got caught in the scoreboard. Kentucky showed a ton of toughness in the game being in a hostile environment for a team so young and full of freshman. Arkansas couldn’t keep Randle off of the glass. He was a man inside. One mental lapse and a missed block out and the game is over. Give Qualls credit for not gicing up on the play. I didn’t think there would be enough time for a putback attempt after the three went up. Great play and a great game.

SpartanGloryParticipantDid anyone else notice that Randle plays perimeter D with his hands behind his own knees? True Calipari fundamentals right there.

Mad MaxParticipantThat was just a brutal way to loose as Kentucky fan, but I’ll give credit to Quals for that nasty dunk, he can get up, and he’s a very good, tough, physical player, could be worthy a non-lottery 1st round pick this year. All I could say at the end was, well shiiiiiit. The piggies also have some other solid college players and Portis could develop into a pro in a couple seasons, he’s got talent. Mike Anderson is a good coach, and his team plays really hard and tough.
This UK team is still frustating with their inconsitent play, but then again you remember it’s a bunch of underclassmen, mostly freshmen, who have only been playing together since October, that’s not even 4 full months. I was impressed with with Young and Andrew Harrison for hitting clutch, 3-pointers, and Randle played well as usual. The Cats still have a ways to go with everything, but that’s the price you pay for having a team full of super-talented freshmen. I think you can see the talent in all these guys, it’s just they still have a lot to learn and get better. In 2-3 years, these guys would be absolute studs in college.
