r377ParticipantDue to spam filters some basic words have been replaced eg. taxi
Has anyone renegotiated their current contract for the best of the team ?
I remember when Charles Barkley signed with the suns he took a pay cut to sign Danny Ainge. Bosh, Wade and LBJ took bit of a pay cut to play together.
I am actually talking about a contract that is already currently in place. For example Amare Stoudamire. Amare for example has a total of $165 mill in salary he will make by the end of next season. Ok take out taxi and professional fees could be cut nearly in half making it down to $83 mill but then with promos/ads he would be on $90+mill take home in his hand cash.
Could Amare put his hand up and say "Listen I have not played up to my end of the deal: approx $100 mill over 5 years. For the sake of the team trying to win and to try and keep Melo in NY I will renegotiate my final year say at half price so you can sign another veteran free agent"
Before I get hit with negs and smart comments, Amare $23 mill would be down to say $12mill take out for taxi and fees he would only be missing $5 or $6 mill from his own pocket. Yes I know thats alot of money but what can you do with $90mill that you cannot do with $85 mill ?
On the other side New York might appreciate it and return the favour slightly. Rather than him sign for minimum wage for 1 year elsewhere, the Knicks might return the favour and give him say a 3yr deal for $5 or 6 mill or something similar….
Carmelo Anthony has earnt about the same in salary but alot more from promos/ads. He has the option of $23.5 mill in New York next year. He could also do the same and take a pay cut.
Alot of the elite NBA players say they want to win a championship but very few are ever willing to make that sacrifice financially. (I know Durant could have made more money elsewhere)
So my question is…. In the history of the NBA has anyone renegotiated their current contract for the best of the team ?

DondiJohnParticipantFirst off, im somewhat of a Grammar Nazi. Let me point out that its taxes. Players dont have their own personal ride so they pay for taxi rides lol. Hahaha
I think in the 90s. Jordan was paid 30 mil and pippen only was paid 1 mil. Im not sure though if it was a current contract

CynthiaParticipantThere’s nothing more annoying than a self-proclaimed "Grammar Nazi" whom is unable to find the apostrophe key.
• "im" is I’m
• "dont" is don’t
• "lol" is not a word, therefore should not be placed within the period of the sentence
• "90s" is ’90s or nineties
• "mil" is an abbreviation for military and in some countries millimeter/milliliter0 - Posted on: Tue, 01/28/2014 - 2:17am #865751

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantI don’t think teams/players can renegotiate their contracts while the contract is active.
Plus, it’s not like the NFL, where owners and GMs give players an ultimatum where they take a lower salary or they get cut; so even if they could renegotiate, it just doesn’t make sense business-wise.

Mr. ChicagoParticipantThe contracts are guaranteed. The players union/CBA would not allow players to take a pay cut (also as pointed out – it makes zero sense business wise).

Mr. HookShotParticipantMight it be possible to change say $20 for 1 year to something like $24 for 2 or 3 years? Is that possible?

frogmanParticipantBasketball is a profession where the luckiest players can make a living for themselves in maybe a 15 year period. These players have earnt their contracts and I know for a fact I would not feel bad about taking every penny I can get. If a franchise wants to give them the money, they shouldn’t feel bad about taking the money.
Basketballers have it so much better than NFL players. If it was the NFL Amare would have got his 20 mil or so for the 1st season and not see the other $80 million because of the non guaranteed contracts.

TyroberParticipantI remember a couple of years ago Tim Duncan left 5 or 10 million on the table so the team would have enough money to sign Ginobli.

HitsterParticipantDirk Nowitzki opted out in 2010 to sign a much more team friendly deal, he took $80 million over 4 years and opted out from over $21 million a year down to taking $17.2 million for 2010-11. So he didn’t push for a 5 or 6 year deal as he could have done and left maybe $16 million on the table on the max possible 4 year deal he took.
Players cannot renegoiate a contract as far as I know although the Thunder give Nick Collinson a $6 million mid season rise one year when they were under cap in return for him taking a lot less on his new deal in order to try and work the cap. This was effectively a front loaded deal put it kicked in on the last year of his expiring contract, the Thunder were able to do this as they were under the salary cap level I recall.
If this could be done under the new CBA I don’t know and I doubt it could be done on rookie deals either.
