jaysmith1987ParticipantHarrison Barnes situation is really similar to Rudy Gay when he was back in college. Rudy Gay was a player you looked at and he had tools to be great but when he played he was always a complimentary player. The beginning of his sophomore year everyone projected him as the number one pick but as the season roled on and gms realized he was more of a number two option than the lead man he fell all the way to late lottery. Gay has developed more into the alpha dog leader but he is a level below elite. I think after all the hype dies down if Harrison Barnes does come out this year he ends up falling to mid lotto but i strongly feel he stays another year because he doesn’t seem like a guy who will leave college without a bunch of success.

midwestbbscoutParticipantbut if so he will get drafted somewhere near where he should unless Charlotte gets the 3rd pick…..Gay was the obvious pick but Mike jacked it up….

OhCanada-ParticipantWhat situation, he shot really bad no big deal. Everyone gets slumps the fact that his came at the beggining of the season should be a positive. It seems like he is fine, he is a freshman remember that. The problem is that everyone set the bar too high for this young man as if he was Lebron James calibur talent. Drop it already.

BKKnicksfanParticipantI kinda disagree with this and here’s why
When Rudy Gay came to UCONN, they had a couple dominant players in Marcus Williams ( He had a monster triple double against Notre Dame that year) and Charlie Villaneuva. He was relegated to the 3rd man spot and did well. His second season, that team was terrible talent wise and was pretty much lefted for Gay to be the man. Marcus Willams came back and he took over. That combined with Rudy not taking over AND breakout seasons from Josh Boone and Hilton Armstrong, Gay was called out for being soft and lacking passion
The issue for Barnes? He’s a freshman and this team has no rock. Right now, Barnes need Tyler Zeller and one more player ( I’m calling for Reggie Bullock) to help him.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantGood Post..
You are so right about Rudy Gay…After his freshman year..I remember alot of people were comparing him to Scottie Pippen..But his sophomore year he played to be too laid back and never took over games..During the 2006 draft many felt he had the most upside than anyone..Charlotte was thinking about taking him at number 3..But they felt Adam Morrison was the safer pick..(in my Vincent Price Laugh aahahahahahahahaha, ahahahahahahahaha)

RicoParticipantRudy Gay put up .462 FG%, .467 3P% as a freshman. Barnes is currently shooting .338 from the field. I wouldn’t say their situations are similar because Gay was actually productive.

dragons12Participantharrison barnes just isnt playing well. there’s not a comparison since every player has this time. the man is from iowa. let him adjust to being the the big time talked about player and lets see how he does when acc play comes

scoutguruParticipantBut one thing you gotta give Rudy credit for is the fact that he has turned himself into a high level first option type player in this league (to the tune of a max for his 2nd pro contract). A lot of people didn’t think he’d reach this level, many believed he would be a bust, and follow the path of just a nice role player, a la Lamar Odom, Marvin Williams.
But yeah I like that comparison for Barnes. But for Rudy though, it was more of a situation where he just never dominated games the way talent evaluators and fans thought his talent suggested he should’ve, going into his Soph yr. But he was never as lost and shot so low of a % as Barnes is, albeit he was a yr older, and the pressure wasn’t on him to be the leader of that team etc. So although I see why u’d make the comparison, it’s slightly off.

JJeff6ParticipantLamar is a little more than : "a bust" and "a nice role player" dont you think. How about "without Lamar Odom the Lakers dont win the championship last year." He would start on 25 nba teams. More than a bust.

QUINCEY HODGES1It’s not Barnes skills that are questionable, He just isn’t being aggressive. He sits and tries to let the game come to him instead of tryna take over

LazarusMunozParticipanthe’s way too cerebral out there…he thinks too much and it causes him alot of hesitation. At some point he is gonna need to trust his instincts and just play his game!
From reading interviews with him,he comes across as really good kid and i really hope he’s able to put it together at some point! Alot of the times with players rated this high, they have a bit of a knucklehead in them or there ego can some times be a huge turn off. I dont get that at all with him and i think the hate or the desire to see him fail has been caused of the way the media has hyped him up so much

HitsterParticipantI doubt that Barnes drops to 8th in the draft but Rudy Gay has proved he should have been taken higher, certainly Charlotte at 3 would have been the logical team to take him back in 2006.

QUINCEY HODGES1Maybe he is suffering from the freshman Following the upperclassmen thing. some freshman who are very talented, more talented then there older teammates follow them instead of becoming leaders. That changes sometimes half way through the season or the next year so maybe it will change for him

scoutguruParticipantOk but Lamar Odom was supposed to be the next Magic. Even as a second option, along side Kobe prior to Gasol arriving, he didn’t step up and take command of that role. The timing was right for him to be Kobe’s sidekick, and he failed miserably, so much that Kobe had to go out and avg 35 ppg for them to compete. For a guy with his talent and skills to never have no all-star appearances, and come up short in many key moments is disappointing. I won’t say he’s a complete bust, a semi-bust would probably be more correct, since he couldn’t live up to his high billing, but yet remains a respectable cog in a championship level team.
And for Barnes, it’s sad the a kid can’t just go out there and play ball, and we can’t evaluate him as a FRESHMAN, he must be evaluated at top 5 pick all the time. But hey, its the environment we live in with college hoops nowadays.
