European BasketballerParticipantThis is thread about Greek national team at the FIBA Europe Under 18 Championship. This is the qualifier tournament for the FIBA World Under 19 Championship next summer.
In this European tournament is featuring many of the players from ’97 youth class that many basketball experts consider the strongest in European history.
This Greek youth generation (’96/’97) is considered as one of strongest in Greek history along with the ones of ’76/’77, ’82/’83, ’89/’90, ’94/’95. So we will see how it does against this what is considered by many as maybe the best one in Europe ever in youth ages.
For Greece the team has many interesting players to keep any eye on. Such as:
Georgios Papagiannis – 7-1 275 C – plays in Euroleague club Panathinaikos
Vasileios Mouratos – 6-4 180 PG – plays in Greek League club Nea Kiffisia
Georgios Tsalmpouris – 7-1 220 PF – plays in NCAA team Iowa State
Vasileios Charalampopoulos – 6-8 235 SF – plays in Euroleague club Panathinaikos
Dionysis Skoulidas – 6-7 190 SF – plays in Greek 3rd Division club Peristeri
Antonios Koniaris – 6-4 190 PG – plays in Euroleague club Panathinaikos
Dimitrios Stamatis – 6-4 190 SG – plays in Greek League club Panionios
Vasileios Toliopoulos – 6-1 170 PG – plays in Greek 2nd Division club Ikaros
Kostas Mitoglou – 6-10 225 PF – plays in NCAA team Wake Forest
Kostas Antetokounmpo (6-7 SG) did not get selected to play with the team because he is getting ready to start with his high school team in USA. But he should be ready for playing at the under 17 world championship later this summer.

European BasketballerParticipantIf you are talking about Antetokounmpo, his school isn’t allowing him to play. So that’s why his name isn’t there.
Anyway, USA got lucky it seems, because one of Greece;s by far best players and two point guards Dionysis Skoulidas, got injured and that’s why he hasn’t been playing. He will also miss the entire under 17 world championship. Even though he plays at small forward, he is a play maker and runs the offense, so he is a point forward.
Besides Antonios Koniaris, he was Greece’s only other point guard.
So USA got lucky in that Greece lost two of its best players. Anyway, besides that……
They are preparing for the game with USA, as they are barely even trying in the under 18 tournament. They are barely even using their 7 footers at all in that tournament, and would be easily killing the competition if they were.
They are just preparing for the under 17 tournament. So the USA and any fans expecting a 30 plus point blow out are very delusional. They are doing very well against good European teams without even using Tsalmpouris and Papagiannis hardly at all. And when they do decide to use Papagiannis, the whole basket area is shut down totally in half court, and the defensive rebounds are totally controlled.

peZt93ParticipantWell that’s one way of putting it when you disappoint at a tournament "we weren’t even trying". If you guys weren’t taking this tournament seriously, I doubt the couch would have punched one of the kids on the bench.
Maybe they’re just not as good as you try make them look? Croatia has by far the most talent in this tournament and Turkey is better as well.
And don’t kid yourself, USA will blow you out at the World Cup just like everyone else.

European BasketballerParticipantFirst off Turkey is playing at home, which is the only reason you are saying that, so you probably think they can win based on that and because most of their players are ’96 generation so they have one of the older teams.
So "more talent". Of course no American would ever check facts like that.
Anyway, don’t make up stuff if you have no idea what you are talking about.
This tournament of under 18 is a qualification for the under 19 world tournament. Greece ALREADY qualified for that because they are hosting it.
Normally no one cares about these youth tournaments in terms of wins and losses, unless they don’t understand basketball, because it is about developing good players for the future, but because that is a world tournament and Greece is hosting, of course they would like to win that one.
So for Greece, THIS tournament is of little importance, since they are already qualified to the tournament they care about, and ALSO since a more important tournament the under 17 world championship starts very soon, and half the team has to play in that with no rest and no preparation.
So they don’t want to tire out those players. And of course this tournament is of little importance other than trying out some thing getting ready for the next year’s under 19 that Greece hosts. And again, mainly NOT tiring out the whole group of players before the under 17 tournament.
As for that coach, that has nothing at all to do with this tournament. Get serious. Greek federation is controlled by Panathinaikos club and that is fully issues related to that since both the coach and player are related to that club. It’s a coach that is related to that club scoling a young player of that club, doing what he is told to do in the federation that is run by that club. Nothing at all to do with these youth tournaments.
It’s the same reason why Papagiannis plays little time in a tournament that they care little about, because Panathinaikos (which controls Greek federation) does not want to damage their top and most important talent.
Also, I never said anything about the Greece team at this tournament winning the tournament, being "most talented", about beating USA, or any other things. You implied I said that. Notice I never said any of that. You just made it up that I said all of that and then pretended I said it to troll.
Stop trolling.
