Both Gary Harris and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope have the potential to be clear, above average SG’s in the league within the next couple of seasons. Both share 3 & D capabilities, with the ability to defend multiple positions. Their stats last season were as follows:

    KCP (23 years old) – 14.5pts, 3.8rebs, 1.8assists, 1.4stl, 1.5threes, 42%FG, 31% three’s

    • Eclipsed the 20 point mark 17 times last season
    • Season high of 31 points against Boston (DEC 16th)
    • Eclipsed 3 steals 16 times last season
    • Hit 3 or more three pointers 15 times last season as well

    Gary Harris (21 yo) – 12.3pts, 2.9rebs, 1.9assists, 1.3stls, 1.4threes, 48%FG, 35% three’s

    • Eclipsed the 20 point mark 5 times last season
    • Season high of 5 steals against Detroit on JAN 23rd
    • Shot better than 50% from the field 37 times last year
    • Hit 3 or more three pointers 10 times last season as well

So Harris shot it better from the field, but KCP showed a little more expolosion in the scoring department last season. KCP also has 1 more year of pro experience, so Harris could match (or exceed) KCP’s production this coming year if his trajectory continues.

So my draft.net homies.. who do you think is the better current & long term prospect at SG between these two?

Harris is younger and probably has more offensive upside as a shooter. Neither project as a primary creator on offense. Harris should develop into a plus defender as well.

What sets them apart IMO is KCP’s lockdown ability on defense. I think he’s already one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA. His length, fast-twitch quickness, speed and footwork make him an absolute nightmare for PGs & SGs, and even the occasional SF. His motor covering the best guard on the opposing team every night is unbelievable. He’s going to get paiddddd next offseason even if his offensive game doesn’t show much more development.

Check out his defensive highlight videos on YouTube if you appreciate great defense as much as I do.

The thing about KCP is he is already one of the top wing defenders in the league. Defensively hes an ace and he brings it every night. Offensively he struggles with consistency and shot selection. He is a streaky shooter but when he is hot he can be a primary option. Kind of like JR Smith.

Harris is a good prospect in his own right and I’m sure many would prefer him. He’s a steady contributor on both ends of the floor that plays to his strengths and knows his role.

I like both players good topic.

Lockdown defenders, especially on the wings, are very rare.  I think KCP is a better shooter than he has currently shown, because he gets fatigued playing big minutes and busting himself on defence and that impacts his offence. Once he gets physically used to doing both, I think his shooting will improve.

I think KCP is most valuable right now because of his defense obviously but as a Pistons fan you see the luxury it is to have him and Jackson because Jackson can cover a 2 with his size if there’s a premier point against us. Think Cleveland for example. I think he’ll always be a low to mid 30% guy from 3 which sucks but I think he can improve his handle enough to at least get easier buckets in some way

Im also big on Harris though I think he’ll be great on the offensive end some day because he’s a prototype izzo player he just makes smart plays over and over and he plays hard in his own right

KCP easily for the short term but I think Harris has All Star potential as his ceiling Pope is a fringe all star but he’ll make a couple if not a few All Defensive teams in his career

mentioned   —– KCP is a great Defender but I like Harris’ Defense as well — Harris is Rugged & physical – plus he’s got a nice groove going w/ E. Mudiay in Denver – that is a Really Big, Physical back court & adding Jamal Murray – wow I Luv it!’

KCP has that Elite athleticism that Harris does not posses but Harris is so steady & he can hit that open J  –  I def can’t decide  –  I really like what Detroit has going on w/ their Back- Court too   –    I’m a complete sucker for good young players & I really hate to criticize guys who are still Developing

I was just watch clips of the 5 or 6 guards projected in the Top 11 in the 2017 Draft — Good LORD! Fox, Fultz, Smith, Ntilikina, Ball, Monk —- My Jaw is on the Floor!

I was not really heaps high on Pope as a lotto pick for the Pistons. He was never a great shooter in college and that has transferred to the pros. He gets good shots, he is just not that good as a shooter, hence his low %.

I think a lot can be contributed to his situation in Detroit – he has a good coach, team, training, development etc. He was used in somewhere like Phillie or Sac he would be barely score double digits.

If they were to swap teams Pope would prob be a 12ppg scorer in Denver and Harris would prob average 15ppg in Detroit.

Pope has better size, but Harris is the better shooter. Harris was good after all-star break last year averaging 14ppg on 48%.

As a young team, you would be happy to have either one on your roster. I would give the very slightest of edges to Harris….
