Per the Orlando Sentinel and ESPN.com, Frank Vogel has agreed to a deal in principle to become the next head coach of the Orlando Magic. On the surface this is a nice win for the Magic for 3 reasons:

    • Vogel is a more talented, younger, front-office friendly coach than Scott Skiles. He should relate to Hennigan and his staff much, much better.
    • He’s helped young players (i.e Paul George, Roy Hibbert, Myles Turner) elevate their game without screwing with their minutes and roles on a nightly basis.
    • Some quality free agents have come to Indiana under Vogel’s leadership (David West, and Monta Ellis come to mind)

Orlando is going to have $40+ million in cap room this summer, and hiring a stable head coach such as Vogel gives Orlando a chance to land at least 1 quality free agent this summer to their young core. Which is really what they’re banking on as a way to salvage the Tobias Harris trade. With Orlando’s perceived instability following Skiles resignation last week, this gives the franchise a more realistic chance to lure someone in with Vogel at the helm.

Lastly, I’d be really curious to hear from Pacer fans on what this hire means for the Magic moving forward. As Indiana fans, do you think this is a lateral move for Orlando or am I right in feeling optimistic about my team next season & beyond? I think he’ll do great things for Oladipo and Aaron Gordon next season!

they will be the 8th seed in no time, just three more seasons and it’s theirs!

It’s definitely a good hire. Frank Vogel is easily the best coach they’ve had since Stan Van Gundy. The Magic still need players, especially their starting backcourt, to develop better shooting or they need to make a few trades. I like a few of their pieces in Vucevic, Gordon, Payton, and Oladipo, but perhaps they’re not a great combination.

I like this hire for them as he seems like a firm but fair kind of coach and has had alright success on the development side of things.

Unfortunately the Magic have hired coaches that just haven’t fit their roster in the past…They also haven’t had the personal to fit their systems which didn’t help matters…If I was the Magic I would say to Vogel we will give you this season to evaluate this roster to see what fits your system then we will go make the moves necessary to make it happen…Because if the Magic keep trying to fit a square peg in a round whole it won’t work and they will keep failing like the have the last 3-4 season…

The pieces I could see being kept though: Aarron G(young and seem like he is solid on defense and has improved since rookie season)

One of Victor O or Elfrid not both as the both have not much range but are overall solid

and maybe Nik V but more in a bench role as he seems like a stat stuffer..

With Washington and Orlando getting good quality coaches, The southeast division is getting more competitive. Good hire by the Magic. Add in the fact that Frank Vogel and Erik Spoelstra will try to outcoach each other in the same division can be interesting come next season. I can’t wait to see this pan out.

Frank took the Pacers to two Conference Finals and has a clear winning record in his coaching career so looks the ideal sort of coach to mould the young Orlando roster back into a play off team.

The Magic have did improve from 25 wins in 2014/15 to 35 wins this season so they are making steady progress and if Frank can harness the young talent they could have a platform to push for the play offs next season.

The young roster does need refining as despite having several statistically successful players, the results haven’t been quite achieved yet. Frank can work with Rod Hennigan on getting the right roster in place, the Magic own all their future picks, have a few assets due to them from trade deals and have some decent young talent so they have options and pieces to make future trades if they so wish.
