I just learned that former NBA player and Sixers assistant coach Sean Rooks passed away after collapsing in a Philadelphia restaurant just hours after he met with Jeff Hornacec to join the Knicks as an assistant next season.

That’s another tough loss to basketball and sports in general this year and really kind of shocking since the reasons are still unclear and no one knew about a possible health problem.

Since I follow the league beginning in the early to mid 90s, i knew him as a good backup center on several teams including the 99 Lakers which I routed for with Shaq and Kobe and I had him on many NBA Live rosters as a backup on my teams.

Rooks had a bright coaching future in front of him and was well respected throughout the league.

Sad to see him go like this. RIP

I saw this last night, I couldn’t believe it. I hope they can figure out why athletes like Sean Rooks are passing so young and save some lives.

There was actually an article on why tall people seem to die much earlier than the average person. If I remember correctly I think it was Larry Bird who was quoted as saying he didn’t expect to live to an old age. Terribly sad for his family. And after he’d got a new job too!

Like XYRYX, I started following the NBA in the mid 90s and regularly had rooks on my teams in NBA Live. Sad to see another one go.

Very sad news, the guy wasn’t much older than me and it was also rumoured he was in the frame for a job at the Knicks.

Interesting point about tall people perhaps tending to die younger. I’m aware of people who have had giantism not living to a normal average age but never of people who are just naturally tall.
