BO KIMBLE TOPS GARY PAYTON IN $100,000 ONE-ON-ONE FINAL

Bo Kimble’s victory in the One-On-One Challenge tournament won’t make him No. 1 in the NBA draft.

What his $100,000 paycheck in the inaugural event may have proved to scouts is that he won’t back away from anyone."There’s a lot of one-on-one in the NBA, and whatever scouts were here now know I can play against anybody, any size," the 6-foot-5 Kimble said.

Kimble defeated 6-2 Travis Mays of Texas and two All-Americans, 6-7 Lionel Simmons of La Salle and 6-4 Gary Payton of Oregon State to win the One-On-One Challenge.

Combined, Kimble’s three opponents were 26-for-62 from the field and 10-for-38 from 3-point range.

"The big doubt about my game was defense, and I hope I showed that Bo knows defense," Kimble said. "I want people to know I like to compete and play defense."

Kimble outshot and outmuscled Payton to win 30-23 in the final of the single-elimination tournament, which had seven eight-minute games.

Payton had an advantage with an extra few minutes of rest while Kimble was beating Simmons 34-30 in the semifinals.

But Kimble showed no signs of fatigue, making four 3-pointers early in the game for a 14-5 lead.

How awesome would one of these be today? Different divisions would indeed be needed, but it would be awesome to see 4 top draft picks play for 100 grand. This competition obviously had little to do with NBA success, Gary Payton had a Hall of Fame career, Lionel Simmons had a much better NBA career than Bo, and Travis Mays first year in the league was better than any of Bo Kimble’s. Still, this would be so much fun to see, who would your four guys be?

    I will make three divisions:

PG’s: Kyrie Irving, Brandon Knight, Jimmer Fredette, Kemba Walker (Of course we would want to see who wins between these 4. Would Jimmer not be odds on favorite?)

Wings: Alec Burks, Jordan Hamilton, Tyler Honeycutt, Marshon Brooks (Think these guys would really show us something, would be fun)

Combo Forwards: Derrick Williams, Marcus Morris, Markieff Morris, Tristan Thompson (Would be great to see if the Morris twins could back up their trash talk. First Markieff saying Williams was overrated, than Marcus saying he is the best overall talent in this draft. Would also like to see how Tristan stacks up against these guys)

International: Enes Kanter, Jonas Valanciunas, Bismack Biyombo, Nikola Vucevic (I know Vucevic played US College ball, but these guys would be incredibly interesting to see go up against one another.)

Yeah, this would be a pipe dream, and I am sure people have others than would want more than some people I listed, but it just seems like a cool concept. It would honestly be awesome to see how some big guys went up against small guys as well. I remember Marcus Camby as a rookie saying Damon Stoudamire used to beat him in one on one. Maybe have all 4 division winners play in a Final Four type situation? Would be really awesome too watch. At least better than the HORSE they had at the All-Star Game.

A point guard clash between Irving, Knight, Kemba, Jimmer along with Rubio, Darius Morris, Reggie Jackson, and Nolan Smith would be GREAT to watch.  First round matchups between former Dukies Irving and Nolan Smith, two bigger point guards in Knight and Darius Morris, Kemba against Reggie Jackson, and Jimmer versus Rubio.  Great first round battles with Kemba and Jimmer on oposite sides (Kemba versus Irving the next round maybe, and Jimmer versus Knight in the other matchup), with a possible final of Kemba and Jimmer.
