My name is Z and this is my first post on the forums after being a reader of post for a number of years. I find the discussion on here to be among the best on the internet, and respect a lot of the longtime posters on the forum.

I was thinking to myself how much I personally love all-star weekend, and how much fun I used to have watching all the events over the years, and how nowadays my excitement level has fallen on hard times. The All-Star weekend is supposed to be a showcase of the best talent the NBA has to offer not only in the All-Star game itself but also through the other events they have each and every year. The dunk contest was once a great spectacle….now it is barely watchable. The NBA is a star driven league, and without the stars the contest is just not something we need anymore.

We need real competition! We need something new and fresh! We need something that LeBron James will ACTUALLY take part in (Small Jab at the best in the world) but more importantly we need something to bring in new fans, and showcase new stars. We need to see All-Stars who play in the main game, and the rising stars on each team that can bring new excitement to the league.

We need a 3 on 3 tournament at the All-Star Game…and this is how we do it:

I am going to use this all-star game as a prototype or model to show you how I would do it:

    2015 3 on 3 All Star Tournament

Each team in the NBA would select 3 players from their own roster to compete in the tournament (30 Teams) to fill out the last 2 teams in the tournament we would have 2 All Star Legends Teams.

Each NBA Team could select any 3 players on their roster who are healthy at the time of the competition.

Each Team would hold off announcing their 3 member teams until a special selection show on TNT the Wednesday Night before the Competition. This would make teams not be able to play the match up game in size or speed for their first round opponents, thus putting too much size or not enough size on your team a huge advantage/disadvantage in the tournament.

Each Legend Team would be any 3 players who are currently retired from the NBA (Not on an active roster) and that have made an All-Star Team

The First Round Matchups would pit the team with the best record in one conference (The Warriors in the West) vs. the Last place team in the other conference (The Knicks in the East) Then the 2nd best in the west vs. the 2nd to last in the east and so on until each of the 30 teams would match up with their opposite conference opponent.

    Example:: 1W vs. 15E, 7W vs. 9E, 12W vs. 4E, etc….

The 2 legends teams would face each other in the first round allowing one of them to have to advance to the 2nd round, and guaranteeing seeing one Legends vs. Legends Match up in the tournament

The Teams would be broken into 4 regions just like the the NCCA tournament with the each Region being lead by the 1’s and the 2’s in each conference.

It is a Single Elimination Tournament

    RULES

Half Court 3 on 3 Basketball

Games up to 15 (1 point for Regular Basket, 2 Points for 3 pointer)

             Must Win by 2

WINNERS OUT – (A fun rule for sure)

Must take missed shot back out beyond the 3pt Line before scoring (Unless air ball)

Each team is Allowed 3 fouls without Penalty

On the 4th Foul, and Every other foul after that the team that is fouled receives 1pt and the ball up top.

If a foul leads to the 15th point and the win, the team that is fouled does not receive the free point – INSTEAD each member of team must go to the free throw line, and make a free throw. If any member of the team misses their free throw, then both teams will play on.

The Tournament would play over 3 days starting on the Thursday Night before the all star game:

The All-Star Weekend would look like this:

Thursday Night – Celebrity Game / 1st Round Matchups

Friday Night – Skills Contest/ 2nd Round Matches

    Saturday Night – 3Pt Contest/ Quarterfinals/Semifinals/Finals

    Sunday Night – All-Star Game

I believe with the longer break we have during the All-Star Week this could be possible, and something never seen before. The match ups we could have could be amazing, and the hype the NBA could bring to an event like this is immense. We don’t even have to have it as a yearly All-Star occurrence…maybe ever 4 years or 2 years or something like that.

The idea of allowing new fans to see the best players on each team could bring in all kinds of new revenue in jersey sales, and ratings in games of lesser seen/younger teams in the league.

I ask you the readers of the Forum to answer these questions

1.)    Who would you choose for each team this season? (Will post that next)

2.)    Who would be the favorite? (OKC, GS, LAC, CLE all stand out to me)

3.)    What is the best first round match up (You will see below that right now OKC and CLE play each other in the first round!!! Not gonna be able to beat that)

4.)    Who is your 1st Round Upset (You will see below, but mine is Lakers over Wizards – Swaggy, and Kobe could be too much!)

5.)    Who would you not select for a team that others might? (I didn’t select R. Hibbert, D. Jordan, Z. Randolph, A, Horford, or Greg Monroe…just don’t fit in to my teams)

6.)    What do you think of the rules? Should they be changed, and if so what changes would you make?

7.)    Who would you put on the legends teams? Would they have any shot of getting out of the 2nd round? (There has to be one superstar so I went with Shaq on one of the teams because it’s shaq, and he is a monster, and it would be to much fun to watch him play. So it’s Shaq, Grant Hill, and Jason Kidd on Team 1 AND on Team 2 it’s T, McGrady, Rasheed Wallace, and Chauncey Billups…Not too shabby)

8.)    Who is your final 4 & winner? (Warriors vs.OKC / Rockets (Easy Region) vs. LAC – GS vs. LAC in the Finals – LAC WIN!!)

Thank you all for reading this post. I know it’s a fantasy idea, but within this fantasy is a real fun reality that could be so special, and fun for the diehard, and casual fan.

I made a topic about this 2 years ago. I think Now I’d rather have a one on one tournament since the all star game itself is pretty much a pick up game

I’ll def try and check out that post from 2 years ago. It is nice to see other people think like I do.

The big problems with 1 on 1  instead are:

1.) It takes away a lot of players, (especially players on lower teams) away from partictipating in the weekend, and getting exposed.

2.) I really feel like the best players would compete with their teammates in a 3 on 3, but wouldn’t take the chance of getting beaten 1 on 1 in a tournament for the sheer reason of ego and pride of winning and losing.

I love LeBron, but I feel like him, and a lot of top top stars wouldn’t risk it, and we’d be left with the Dunk Contest problem of lack of stars and lack of a team aspect a well.

Saying all that I would absolutely love if they could do a 1 on 1  one year then a 2 on 2 then a 3 on 3 then maybe a dunk contest and change it up so it never gets stale.

I think that this would be a great idea, I’d love to see more players get to show their skills and so teams like the Jazz and the Bucks or the T-Wolves, (knowing that none of those teams are good), would get to show at least their best players skills.

I literally just mention this yesterday (in the 3 on 3 Olympics thread). Yeah, I think it would be an interesting idea and would add some excitement to a pretty stale All-Star weekend

That would be so fun to watch. Nice job that’s a tournament for the basketball junkies. Its unfortunate something like that would never happen. Its like Lebron participating in the Dunk Contest its fun to think about it.

They will not have that many players participate in any All-star Weekend activity. The odds of injuries increase. More players participating in more events equals more injuries. As fun as it would be no player with a decent contract would participate and risk an injury which would make the teams filled up with young guys and vets rather than valuable starters and stars. Even if the star player wanted to no team would let that player participate. Its not a meaningful game like the Olympics. If they did end up playing, watching the game would be like watching a pregame warm up shoot around. There would be no competitive spirit to the game.

As fun as it would be to watch them play competitive or even stage competition like the All-star games (which are always tied late in the game in the past years) it would still have more risk potential then entertainment potential.

Great first post that excersized my brain well. 3 on 3 is a different game with less congestion and more space. That means more one on one play or open shots if the iso is helped. Having a big on the floor in that situation would limit your team. I think OKC would win if they added another gaurd with Westbrook and Durant and used KD as their big.

New Orleans would be my sleeper. Your team would have to gaurd Holiday, Evans, and Davis one on one. That’s tough.
