Interesting signing. Definitely a great market value for Ezeli at an average of 7.5 mil a year. In comparison look at what some other bigs have received:

    Timofey Mozgov – 16 mil/year

    Ian Mahinmi – 16 mil/year

    Jon Leuer- 10.5 mil/year

    Mirza Teletovic- 10 mil/year

    Dwight Powell- 9.25 mil/year

    Trevor Booker- 9.2 mil/year

    Anthony Tolliver- 8 mil/year

    Darrell Arthur- 7.6 mil/year

Going to play Devil’s advocate for a moment here on this one.

What has Ezeli done to earn a bigger contract than this? He is injury prone, foul prone and doesn’t really seem to do any one thing at a close to elite level. He’s okay defensively. He’s an okay rebounder. He’s mobile enough. But what about this makes it a steal of a deal…and please don’t use the super low hanging fruit that is the Mozgov deal.

That shouldn’t set the market for centers, otherwise, yeah, every single Center contract is a great contract.

For those who are on "hater" alert, I’m not hating on Ezeli. I like his as a backup center. I’m just curious as to what people see in him that would’ve made him worth more than this.

Yeah…the fact is its a decent signing but still risky. He only played 92 games the past 3 seasons at 14-mpg. His per 36 minute numbers are impressive but he can only play half the season at 14-mpg. That’s half the minutes production of a rotation player and half of the games played. Still a good signing for depth but could end up ruining chemistry especially if he becomes relied on.

That and he trusts his post game too much. Once you get the ball to him somewhere inside, there goes his auto-brick hookshot. Seriously, he flings that thing up almost EVERY time.

And he also has some of the worst hands in the league.

I thought he would have been in line for a bigger contract until he was completely ineffective and exposed during the playoffs. Hes a big body with good athleticism but not the best bball iq. Offensively, he has improved somewhat but is still raw and he struggles to make plays and finish in traffic. Decent defender due to his size and athletic gifts, but can get lost and lose focus at times.

The blazers have a pretty crowded frontcourt, but he definitely gives them additional size and physicality they were lacking last season. I don’t expect him to start but he could give them some valuable mins off the bench.

Portland has done a great job at grabbing player with untapped potential at a good price, via trade or free agency the last 2 off seasons. They got Bargains on Aminu, Davis, Harkless, and Plumlee last year.  Ezili and Napier this years. The Turner deal is yet to be seen,  but with the ever raising market i would be surprised if it’s viewed as any worse than an average value deal going forward.
