The 2011 draft is very weak at the top with only Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams considered to be top tier talent.  The rest of the lottery would be some tough decisions.  I would need to go through some workouts before picking the players.

However, there are some prospects that are currently mocked at late 1st to undrafted that intrigued me.  If I run the Raptors, I would certainly look to buy some late 1st / early 2nd round picks to pick them.

1) Jeremy Tyler – great size, good potential.  He looked very impressive on some of his high school footage as a junior.  He failed pretty badly in Israel as he could not get used to playing Euro style team basketball and playing against men on a daily basis.  However, he moved on to play in the Japan league that somewhat got himself back on track.  I think if this guy can prove he’s mature and starting to figure out how to play team basketball, he’s a top 10 talent.  I would certainly use a late 1st on him if he shows maturity and character during interviews and workouts.

2) Darius Morris – he had a breakout season and he showed that he can pass and run a team.  His biggest weakness at the moment is his shot which is the easiest thing to correct if he’s willing to put in the hard work and work with a good shooting coach.  He’s 6’4 so he’s a big PG.  I see a Jrue Holiday type of player but it would take him time to reach that level.

3) Iman Shumpert – I am not sure why nobody talked about this guy at all and he’s not even on the nbadraft.net mock draft.  He probably can never properly run a team as the starting PG.  His shot is not good enough to be a starting SG.  However, he is an all around player and can do many things well.  He can score a bit, pass a bit, rebound a bit, and the best of all, he can play good defense.  At 6’5 with a good wingspan, he can actually play as a defensive swingman.  I see him as a Tony Allen type of role which is great backup for any teams.  I think he should be considered a late 1st or early 2nd round pick.

4) Jereme Richmond – this kid is very talent.  At this point, he is definitely not ready for the NBA.  His talent alone is worth a 2nd round pick.  Whichever team drafted him must be committed to help develop him though.

5) Greg Smith – apparently this guys has been impressive in workouts.  He got good size and talent to be a 2nd round pick.  Would really have to impress in the workout to be considered in the 1st round though.

 Marshon Brooks, Iman Shumpert, Travis Leslie are the first three that come to my mind but I could also see someone like Scotty Hopson being a solid bench scorer in the NBA so I’d give him a look in the second round.

Nikola Vucevic ( nice size, wingspan , good mid range and even 3pt shot, good post game)  Probably the biggest steal of the draft if he falls into the 2nd round

Jeremy Tyler and Josh Selby; two formerly highly ranked players who for various reasons fell by the wayside. If they end up in the right situation I can see both starting in this league. Both of them have loads of potential.

Those are my top 10 late first eary second. IMO, this will be a year similar to 05 when we saw a good bit of talent fall to the second round in favor of more developed players. Could see any one of these guys fall to the second and more likely than not will. And oddly enough I left out a few guys like Mack,D.Morris, Richmond,J.Williams, and Trey Thompkins just because they weren’t the highest on my lists.

 If any teams were smart they would always take young athletic players like Tyler Jeremy, Jereme Richmond, and Josh Selby right after the Lottery. It’s amazing how much more likely those type of players turn into contributing starters than slow, unathletic older players do. If I was a GM I would never draft a player that was over twenty or past his sophmore year, unless they were beyond incredible in athleticism and skills.

Kyle Singler is late first round on this sie’s mock and has slipped into the 2nd on other site’s mocks. To me he’d seem good value to a contender looking for a role player to play around their top stars. He’s had 4 years under Coach K so he must have learnt something there and coming from Duke he will have a winning mentality which is useful to successful teams.

I like Jon Leuer for the Thunder because he can score in thepaint and perimeter at the PF position. Taking smaller, quicker PFs into the paint and bigger, taller, slower PFs of the dribble. He can score from anywhere.
