With greats like Kobe, Duncan, KG, Pierce, and Nowitzki on the verge of retiring elite players like Davis, Durant, Curry, Harden, Paul and Westbrook continue to emerge as the elite in the league led by the undisputed face of the NBA Lebron James. The league is in great shape and since I’ve been watching basketball I’ve never seen a more exciting game.

Not only is it awesome that there are so many great stars but also quite the opposite is intriguing as well. You can’t win games playing iso basketball anymore. Scott Brooks iso offence has been replaced by Billy Donavan and a very good Warriors team beat a legendary Lebron James performance.

A lot of people have a sour taste in their mouths after last year. A handful of stars/superstars sidelined for most of the season and many rookies as well. OKC and Miami pretty much got thrown out of the playoffs because of their injury problems all year and many people feel (not stating my opinion just saying) that GSW had an easy path to the Championship due to injuries.

Well last years lemons brings this years lemonade because we have stars like PG and KD ready for action rookies like Randle, and Parker up and ready and a rookie class that is already showing signs of overachieving.

And for me growing up in Toronto with the huge amount of Canadian talent in the leagye, the Raptors entering the season with what is likely their most competitive preseason roster ever and that roster includes two players from the Greater Toronto Area.

    I’m pumped!

What sucks for me is that where I live TV access is very limited and the internet is generally too slow to stream. That means that the only places that will have access to the games tonight will be showing the World Series (most likely) instead. Oh well…

You rarely get to see a 67 win title team coming back for an encore.  I think the Warriors will still be the team to emulate and the team to beat.  Ezeli starting and getting more minutes makes them more athletic and quicker inside.  When Bogut returns he could give them a facsimile of ’86 Bill Walton.

Billy Donovan might not win the Coach of the Year Award (might go to Coach Bud on the Hawks or what about a Co-Coach of the Year Award going to Steve Kerr and Luke Walton), but he could be the MVP if he fully maximizes the Thunder roster and brings a championship to Oklahoma City.  Westbrook is my early choice for MVP, and Kevin Durant might have the all-time best Second Fiddle Season of All Time.  If they give the MVP to the Most Valuable PERSON in the league this season, hey, why not Billy Donovan?

The East is sneaky good at the top with not only the Cavs and Bulls but also the Hawks (who keep sticking around) and the Heat.  Also look for two of these three teams to be at least very, very solid: Raptors, Wizards, Bucks.

Then we have a bunch of Cult Classic Rookies: Okafor, Towns, Mudiay, D’Angelo Russell (ok, maybe not so much — although good be an advanced metrics super hero), WCS, Frank the Tank, Myles Turner, and Krispy Kristaps.  Deep, promising rookie, young gun roster, like a mix between 1984-1985 NBA and 1984-1985 WWF.

For bigs, we have some good ones.  DeMarcus Cousins could make that leap from Superstar Benoit Benjamin to, umm, Superstar Nate Thurmond?  Superstar Elvin Hayes?  Sure, let’s go with Super Star Elvin Hayes here.

Anthony Davis still looks like prime 6’10 Kareem to me.

And, dang, that big guy on the Jazz.  The guy with a combined 1,001 moves/nicknames.  Ok, he has a 1,000 nicknames and 1 move — the ram the ball down your throat move.

So, here is my nickname for the Artist Currently Known by more Cheesy Names than Pretty Much Anybody:

    The French Dip.

    Why?

    Ok, he’s French.

On the other hand, he is really really big.  And, tall.  And long.  And athletic.  Cynics would say that he is a center with limited skillset.  All he does is block shots, block more shots, jedi mind trick block shots, dunk, dunk with two hands, dunk off one foot, dunk off two feet, rebound, get more rebounds, and dominate the games on both ends of the floor.

Plus, he is young and I am not sure he knows how good he is.

If I squint, I think he reminds me of Wilt Chamberlain, aka The Big Dipper.

    Hence, THE FRENCH DIP.
