The Denver Nuggets are having serious discussions about a four-way trade that would land Carmelo Anthony with the New Jersey Nets, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

The proposed deal, sources said, also would involve the Utah Jazz and the Charlotte Bobcats. It would deliver Nets rookie forward Derrick Favors, Jazz veteran Andrei Kirilenko and multiple first-round picks to Denver in exchange for their franchise player, potentially bringing a resolution to Anthony’s uncertain future before the Nuggets hold their first practice of the new season.

Sources told ESPN.com that the deal, which has yet to be finalized, also would send former All-Star point guard Devin Harris to Charlotte, with Bobcats forward Boris Diaw moving to Utah.

The four teams, said one source close to the talks, are "seriously engaged" after extensive talks Thursday.

However, one obstacle is Anthony’s willingness to sign a contract extension with the Nets. A source told ESPN.com that the Nets will not go through with the trade — even if Denver is ready to pull the trigger — unless Anthony commits to signing an contract extension, as Kevin Garnett did as part of the mega-trade that sent him from Minnesota to Boston in July 2007.

Because Anthony has the ability to become a free agent at season’s end — which is the hammer that has enabled his agent, Leon Rose, to apply such pressure to the Nuggets in hopes of forcing a trade before the start of the season — New Jersey is unwilling to sacrifice assets such as Favors and Harris without a guarantee that Anthony will be there for the long term.

ESPN.com reported earlier this week that Anthony’s representatives have been pushing Denver to deal the 26-year-old to New York or Chicago, his two preferred destinations, but the Knicks lack the trade assets required to tempt Denver and the Bulls have consistently refused to make center Joakim Noah available, trying instead to sell the Nuggets on a package headlined by swingman Luol Deng.

The Nuggets have offered Anthony a three-year extension worth $65 million, but he has not signed the deal.

So the nets will have a starting lineup for Farmar, Williams, Melo, Murphy, Lopez? That is a pretty good team. I am higher on favors than most people. I really believe that kid is going to be special but if the Nets can get Carmelo Anthony for Harris and Favors you have to pull the trigger

Anthony doesnt sign a contract if Harris is involved in the trade IMO.

giving up favors and harris is quite a bit but atleast it would allow my boy farmar to start. That would be a huge opportunity for him.

Charlotte already owes a 2012 lottery-protected first to Chicago, so they could not put forth a pick. Utah owes Minnesota a 2011 first round pick that is protected from the Al Jefferson trade. New Jersey has its own pick plus a 2012 first round pick from the Warriors (protected top 7 in 2012 and 2013, top 6 in 2014, else 2014 second round pick, 2016 second round pick from the Marcus Williams trade.

My guess is that if the rumor has any legs it would be

    NJ-

    2011 first to Denver

2012 pick from Golden State to Denver

    Derrick Favors to Denver

    Kris Humphries to Charlotte

    Devin Harris to Charlotte

    Utah-

    Andrei Kirilenko to Denver

    Ronnie Price to New Jersey

    Denver-

    Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey

    Nene to Utah

    Charlotte-

    Boris Diaw to Utah

    Gerald Henderson to Denver

Ill be surprised if this happens.  My bet is Melo refuses to sign the extension… which is something Denver just doesn’t get.  Denever claims to hold all the cards but my feeling is they are pushing for a deal before the season starts because they know his trade value only goes down from here.  If the trade deadline roles around and Melo is still on the Nuggets there’s very little chance the Nuggets get anything for him unless he’s going to a team he wants to go to… in which case Melo might just say screw it I’ll play out the rest of the season and let my new team keep its assets.

I wonder if this trade is contingent on Kirilenko signing a new extension?  I could definitly see him signing in NJ next offseason when the new russian owner comes knocking on the door because he will be an UFA… In which case NJ actually comes away with AK47 and Melo for Harris and Favors + picks?.

I’m also curious to know who’s giving up the picks?

Charlotte could certainly use a point guard like Harris.  Most teams could, but Charlotte especially.

Denver would be pretty forward heavy if this went down:

    Andre Kirilenko

    Chris Andersen

    Kenyon Martin

    Shelden Williams

    Ronaldo Balkman

    Al Harrington

Nene and Jefferson with the Jazz would be a nasty front court combo… They are similar but different enough to compliment each other… Interesting to think about…

The tricky part is making the money match so that the moves would make sense. Kirilenko has quite a bit of value, not only as a player, but as a $17 million contract that comes off the books next summer. Diaw has a player option that he will happily accept. If they are going to take on an additional year, they ought to at least come away as being a better team. Nene would make them a better team that would help them justify taking on an additional year of what is essentially Kirilenko money.

"Your dreaming some sweet dreams if thats all yhou gve Denver for Nene and Melo."

Two future first round picks, the third pick from this summer, a lottery pick from 2009, and a $17 million expiring contract is dreaming?

what happens with travis outlaw…we gave the dude 7 mill a year to come off the bench? this trade is dumb, harris favors plus picks not worth a one dimensional player, i dont care how well he can score…vince was basically the same player and he didnt get us a championship…the russian just wants a name

Man would I love to see Nene in Utah.

Williams, Miles/Bell, Diaw, Jefferson, Nene; with Watson, Miles/Bell, Hayward, Millsap, Okur, Fez and Elson as backups. That team would be nasty. Can you say FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP FOR UTAH EVER!!!! Woot,Woot; good time to be a Jazz fan. Loving every minute of it. And look at of those big men, Diaw Jefferson, Nene, Millsap, Fez, Okur, and Elson. 8 big men, with the smallest being 6’8(Millsap, I believe Diaw is 6’9) Beat that Lakers.

The man you are looking for is not Nene, it is JR Smith. that is who Denver is shopping. Now if Nene does get moved they will plead for a little more. Denver can still sell belief to their fans that a playoff spot is within reach after this trade.

     Very true Oh Canada.

Here are the two possible trades that could result:

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2bx7se3

    or,

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2fyxjsw

Obviously I think the first one is better, but would Denver be willing to give up two good players (Melo and Nene) just to start over and try to make another playoff run. True they would try to replace Nene with Diop, but in the end Diop just isn’t the same as Nene, and never will be. They would have to rely on those draft picks from NJ, and of course be okay with missing the playoffs for 2 or more years while they rebuild. Will those demanding Nugget be able to deal with that. With the second one, I don’t know if Coach Brown would like JR Smith. Him and Tyrus Thomas together; those two "bad" egos would just be too much. And I don’t know if Larry Brown can handle that locker presence that Smith gives them.
