McKinzie Sewell, 22-year-old married man, played high school basketball, cost team eligibility

In a disturbing incident in Tennessee, a 22-year-old married man allegedly posed as a senior transfer student at one of Memphis’ best boys basketball teams, leading to the squad’s elimination from the state playoffs.

As reported by Memphis CBS affiliate WREG and the Memphis Commercial Appeal, McKinzie Sewell used a fake transcript to enroll at Memphis (Tn.) Ridgeway High, where he starred on the boys basketball team. Sewell’s transcript was allegedly submitted to the school by his wife, who posed as his mother so he would have a back story to explain why he was enrolling at the school.

Sewell never previously graduated from a high school, but he earned a GED. Somewhat ironically, he wore the number 22 for Ridgeway, identical to his age. He also set up a BeRecruited profile under his name portraying himself as an 18-year-old senior at Ridgeway.

It has not been confirmed whether Sewell registered with the school for the fall or winter term. Regardless, the fact that he had taken the court at all immediately made the entire Ridgeway squad ineligible for the state playoffs, just after the school had reached the regional final round of the tournament.

“It has come to our attention that an ineligible player played in the closing minutes of the Region 8-AAA semi-finals against Whitehaven High School,” Memphis Community Schools said in a statement. “Ridgeway High School reported this information to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association [TSSAA]. Ridgeway HS has forfeited that game and has been removed from the tournament playoffs.”

That removal has effectively ended the season for a group of players who had overcome significant hardship to reach the state semis. Most notably, one of the team’s assistant coaches was killed in his home in February.

Now the team will have to stay home, with parents of the players furious at the Memphis Community Schools’ inability to catch Sewell before he had suited up for a game.

“It’s absurd the administration has failed,” Adrian Jones, a Ridgeway parent told WREG. “They’re not keeping the kids safe. They’re not doing checks and balances.”

Sewell is not the first imposter to strike the prep hoops ranks. In 2010 a Haitian 22-year-old named Guerdwich Montimere played the high school basketball season at Odessa (Tx.) Permian High. He was eventually caught and sentenced to three years in prison because of a relationship with a teenager while he was at the school.

Now Sewell joins the ranks of Montimere and others in the ranks of disturbing prep imposters who have threatened the safety of the teens they compete with and against.

At 22 years old, my strength,athletic ability, and knowledge of the game would exceed 90% of HS kids, and most of these guys seem to have played back while they were their right age in HS(Guerdwich Montimere, who was a 2 star recruit), I’m working on my game every day for an extra 4 years, you cant be serious, i’d easily be a top 10 player in the country and possibly #1 if not caught.

A 22 year old that was already playing ball before and had some type of game, and has 4 more years to work on his game to play against HS kids, would dominate and him being a #1 prospect or top 10 player in the country would not be suprising at all.

Take Terry Rozier for example, the guy was rated 80-100 in the country last year as a true senior in HS, his 5th year this year he is now the #3 PG in the country and #15 player overall, you meaning to tell me 3 MORE years of him doing this he wouldn’t be #1 player in the nation? Stop.

I’m 22 years old now and idc how much I have trained since I graduated high school, Wiggins or any other top ten player in high school would drop 50 on you and I both. But me and you are not the same, I’ve already stated on here numerous times maybe a year or 2 years back what i did in HS, I was rated in the country and all that, top 15 in my class in my state with D1 offers, no need to bring it all back up or im not trying to brag at all, I just think with an extra 4 years and my athletic ability being at an all time high around 21 or 22, i’d be top 10 or #1, were all not the same type talent on this message board, thats what ppl have to take into consideration as well.

i know fast n furious got negged a lot but i see what he means. obviously you probably wouldnt be ranked even in the top 100 but an extra few years can definitely make a huge difference. For example, im sure there is a senior at some d3 school somewhere who is probably just as good some senior in hs going low d1. now being one of the elite players in the country probablyyyyy would never happen but it could make a huge difference. Ive seen kids who went to prep school for only 1 year and it got them scholorship offers. As far as the 22 year old who posed as an 18 year old,. i think that the only pathetic thing was that he was married. it isnt something to be proud of but if you know anything about HS/prep basketball then you know that there are kids 22 years old playing legally(well prep post grad at least) . this dude is married so he should go to school/get a job and support his family

half the kids in the nepsac lol…umm do u remember john riek a few years back from winchendon and a few other HS’s? he was definitely like 40 lol but cmon if you think that the oldest senior in america playing HS ball is 18 then you just dont know enough about basketball in america and in general for that matter. Maybe not high school but for a bunch of post grad schools most of the kids on the roster are pretty old. reg hs prob an age limit of 20 but still at that point i see people on here always bash 20 year old college freshmen n sophs lol..its hard to have this conversation with someone who went to a high school where all the kids in the school were the right age. and its hard to talk about this with people who only ‘watch’ coll bball n the nba. if you know about basketball then you know that kids are older. why even have prep schools/jucos/redshirts just THINK about it lol

No, we understand completely. But just because he’s low level D1 player doesn’t mean he’ll be better then Shabazz Muhammad with that extra 4 years, especially when he isn’t actually playing games during that span. Then you’d have to consider how he projects to the next level because that’s taken into account as well. You’re also assuming that because he was a low-level recruit that he was successful in college, when he could’ve ridden the bench or quit a year in.

Here is an example: A guy named Ethan Wragge went to my high school. He was ranked in the top 10 in his class for our state. He’s now a redshirt junior for Creighton averaging around 8 ppg, would he be a top 10 player in the upcoming class? No, he’d maybe be top 100. Even if you go to a talent-loaded state like California, half the guys in their top 10 wouldn’t be ranked in top 10 for the nation today, and nearly all the guys who would are in the NBA.

Thats why I stopped writing they dont understand what im saying, and I didn’t just have low major offers, I had Mid Majors as well,I was what one coach called me a Mid Major + prospect, where if i would have hit the weights(I was 155 my junior year) and gained about 10-15 pounds I would have easily been a high major recruit, but im glad you understood where I was coming from.

But my whole thing is this and ima leave this situation alone, I play with a guy every sunday in a rec league who was ranked in the 2006 class a top 5-10 player at his position in the country and a top 30-50 player overall in the country depends on who rankings you go by and im from Detroit so you know who im talking about if you put two and two together, he was supposed to go to the NBA, played 2 years in college and everything and now he doesn’t even play to accomplish anything, he just plays to play, things happen in peoples life, and it doesn’t always turn out how you expect.
