So far the trade of Tobias Harris for Brandon Jennings and Ersan Illyasova is looking pretty one sided in the Pistons favor. Orlando justified moving Harris 2 fold: First as a way to acquire some veteran players (who are familiar with Skiles system) who could help the Magic’s young core make a playoff push. And also give them flexibility in the offseason if they go hard after a couple free agents. Thus far, part one of their reasoning is proving to be a failure.

Orlando is now 6-12 since the deal, and have fallen completely out of the playoff picture. Detroit is 10-7 since the trade and Harris has been playing some good ball:

    Tobias Harris #’s since the move: 17pts, 6rebs, 2.5assists, 48%fg, 38% 3pt, 89% ft

The rational part of my brain wants to wait until next year to evaluate this trade. But to me though, I don’t think Orlando is far enough along in their rebuild to make a realistic pitch to this year’s upcoming free agent crop. The big names are Durant, Horford, Conley, Batum.. and they will almost assuredly stay with their current franchise or go to a more winning environment than what Orlando has to offer.

    Sincerely,

The guy who wishes SVG was never fired…

Harris wouldn’t have had the space in orlando. Also he wouldn’t get open shots because Orlando doesn’t have a pick and role combo like Jackson and Drummond. He just didn’t really fit with their roster. I think they should have been able to get more for him like a mid to late first round pick or at least something better. Pistons won because they basically just signed a free agent who fits exactly what they needed.

It looked one sided at the time. They should have gotten a veteran a draft pick.

I would have tired to deal Oladipo instead. I realize he is probably a better talent than Harris but he is too similar to Payton for them to find success together and I dont think he can play the point.

A lineup of Payton, Fournier, Harris, Gordon and Vucevic would have been balanced well and good spacing I think

The Magic added a couple of solid role players but both look as if they have reached their NBA peak and may be starting to decline whilst Harris still looks to have good upside. The Magic had decent depth so adding further depth doesn’t really make sense. SVG was sending a pick to Houston for Motie so I doubt he wanted to give another pick away and it looks like SVG has done good business.
