fai714Participantfrom Live Breathe sports…
"The system that’s in place now is supposed to have to best teams at the right time. Meaning, during their conference playoff games and ultimately the NCAA Tournament. All four teams are exactly that. Kentucky won the SEC, University of Connecticut won the Big East (the best conference in the land), VCU lost in their final to Old Dominion, Butler beat Milwaukee in the Horizon League. Now, the last two teams losing and winning in their championship games isn’t that impressive. But what they’ve done in this tournament has."
I think that if Duke had played Kansas would prove that the system works better, but I guess this is a different way to prove it.

BKKnicksfanParticipantThe two hottest teams are in the title game. So in short: NO

iminipandaParticipantEither way it is still better then the BCS.

llperezi dont think the "best" teams get to win the title consistently, but thats irrelevant. Playoffs are about bringing it when you have to and a tournament is the best way to crown a champ.

TeamShowtimeLakersParticipantthe best teams dont always get to the championship, its more about the teams thats playing the best at the right time.

cheesepillowParticipantOfcourse, that can be applied to all forms of playoffs even if they are multi game series. But that is why we play the game to crown the champion and not simply give it to the school with the best team on paper.

SteroidParticipantNo one still has explained why it is better than the BCS or best of 5 or 7… This is a NBA prospect basketball forum, so of course they’re going to be hardocre, bias people who thinks it better. The reason why the BCS is good is because it makes every game that a team plays in the season important. EVERY GAME has a meaning and it has a playoff atmosphere, so there is no need for a playoff. I don’t see how anyone could say that if a team goes undefeated and beat 4-5 ranked teams during their season doesn’t deserve it. The teams that deserve to play for a big game have to win. One loss could mess all of that up. The BCS gets it right in that sense. The only problems the BCS has is when there are 3 or 4 undefeated teams at the end of the season. There should be a plus one in the BCS but not some 64 team showdown or whatever. I even like the NBA playoffs better than the NCAA tournament. The only reason why the NCAA tournament works so well is because of the lack of talent in college basketball. If these top recruits wouldn’t leave after their 1st or 2nd year, we wouldn’t be seeing VCU and Butler going deep in the playoffs. The talent in football has to stay in at least 3 years. The top schools basically have blue chips as their 2nd and 3rd strings. This one reason why a big tournament would be pointless. Anyone can win the NCAA tournament, and that is what makes it different, but I can’t sit up here and tell myself that is what makes it better.

ProudGrandpaParticipant(I figured out this whole arrow thingy so I can be like you young kids)
Son, you have to take into account injuries. If a #1 football team loses their star quarterback against a solid squad and loses, does that mean they aren’t still possibly #1.
My grandchilren think the BCS is "stupid" and "retarded" and "gay". Crudeness aside, I have to agree with them.

SteroidParticipantWhat is your point because I don’t see what you’re trying to get at here. For instance, take this years championship team, Auburn. Cam Newton basically carried them through the majority of their season. If it weren’t for him, they would not have won a chmpionship. There is no possiblity that a Cam Newtonless Auburn team would have been better than an Oregon team or even an Alabama team and a few others. The quaterback position is the most important position in football. `Now if whatever star quartbackless team lost their quartback and kept winning, then yeah. If they dropped off then obviously their quarterback meant a lot to their team, and they aren’t as good as they were. For instance if you take Kemba off UCONN, they would be significantly worse.

cheesepillowParticipantIf one loss in any of their regular season game can mess up their chance at the title, that is a little bit like the march madness tournament right? The BCS format isn’t particularly bad, except only two teams (chosen by panel or whoever) gets to play one game to win everything. The problem with that is that each season, you can make the case for the Top 6~8 teams in the league before the talent level drops off, so naturally teams from the smaller conference like TCU aren’t even going to be considered unless they dominate for a long time (4,5 straight years?).
In basketball, the talent between teams are much closer and every team has a chance to win any game. The regular season is all about making it into the NCAA tournament as well as positioning yourself for a deep run. The best of 3/5/7 won’t work without cutting the number of playoff teams to ~16. Such series works better in the NBA/NHL because the league hosts a limited number of teams (30 or so) while NCAA division I school have 300+ schools participating.

SteroidParticipantThe thing is with these smaller conference teams in football like TCU or BSU, if they schedule a top 10 team on their schedule, they could more likely be in the conversation. Strength of schedule is a determining factor. BSU put VA tech on their schedule, but VA turned out to be a mediocre team, so the computer factor of VA tech being on their schedule didn’t factor in as much, and not to mention they lost a game against a weak opponent. If these smaller conference teams who feel like they’re contenders put a good SEC team on their schedule and beat them, then they would get consideration.
I agree with you though about the playoff series. I just prefer NBA playoffs over the NCAA tournament. It is all preference. I don’t think one system is better than the other. It is personal flavor. Every college football game is worth watching. The season feels like a playoff. I go to Alabama, where college football is big, so I might be a little biased, but the college football atmosphere is a great thing.
