I definitely believe Joel Anthony exists. No arguments here. Big hustle players love their basketball.

When a guy with limited to no offensive skills is on the floor, he is placing a significantly greater burden on his teammates to compensate. This is not debatable. It is okay to have that guy when he is sharing the court with LeBron, Wade, Bosh, and Mario Chalmers. It is okay when he is out there with Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Taushaun Prince, and Rasheed Wallace. I would always rather have a two sides of the court player, which is apparently radical thinking. I have no problem, however, with grabbing that kind of guy for a minimal investment. This, of course, comes with the caveat that the Joel Anthony-type actually plays good defense and is not just someone who tries to block a lot of shots. That line cannot be crossed with me. There are people in the NBA media who put JaVale McGee on a Defensive Player of the Year ballot, and they are paying their debt to the basketball gods by having to bear witness to Wizards and Bobcats basketball this season.

Look, I championing the Bernard James bandwagon. He is the best NBA-style defensive big  in college basketball right now. It is not close, and I don’t care if he is 27-years old because I know the type of player I am drafting and not deluding myself into thinking he is a franchise cornerstone. He moves his feet more in one game than Anthony Davis and Fab Melo have all season. FSU does not just park their big men under the hoop. They play big boy defense (a few of those teams do exist in college basketball). Why there seems to be a intellectual failing among basketball people to acknowledge that there are rule differences between the NBA is beyond my understanding? When I watch a team play packed in zone or pseudo 1-man zones in college, I have no problem acknowledging it can be a good college defense. Hasheem Thabeet’s failure in the NBA does not change the fact he was an excellent college defender. It does not change the fact that he probably will do well defensively if he plays in Europe where he can go back to parking himself in the middle. I also know that those college games offer very little insight to a player(s) NBA prospects.

Florida State. BTPH nails it, which is why I think the Heat are actively looking for a center to take minutes from Joel Anthony. Dude was a non-factor for a vast majority of the play-offs. He can block shots and puts in a lot of effort, but he is lost on offense. Plus, he is an average rebounder at best and is not a top echelon defender.

So, I would believe in Joel playing 10-12 minutes per game. Any more than that you probably want another center. Guess the Heat kind of do, huh?

I mean, yes, it’s cool as long as they can make up for it in another catagory. Ben Wallace and Reggie Evans did in rebounding, DeAndre does it in lobs and blocks, and Anthony does it in defense.

But the second Anthony dips in defensive value, he is done in this league.

And I’m sure you guys have heard, but last week, DeAndre hit his first basket outside of the paint for his entire CAREER! Three and a half years without making a shot outside of 10 feet, that is what I call offensively illiterate.
