TRC1991ParticipantThis post really isn’t about his sexuality. This post is about something more important.
This is about the player, Derrick Gordon.
Derrick’s an underrated athlete, and started all 33 games for UMASS this year. He’s a 22 year-old junior-to-be who averaged 9.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2 apg, 1.5 spg, and shot 48% from the field. He’s a solid shooter, he can get to the rim, and played well next to Chaz Williams.
With Chaz graduating, Derrick will be the go-to guy in the backcourt for the Minutemen. I like his game. He transferred from WKU and never tried to do anything he wasn’t able to do. He also hit some big shots down the stretch for UMASS.
Hopefully we can see him step up this season with this proverbial weight lifted off his shoulders.
Rooting for you, Derrick!

Lotto StudParticipantNot a "lifestyle" like they once made it out to be. It has become a trend.

ChewyParticipantthe UMASS community is ready to protect him from the Westboro Baptist Church like Mizzou did for Sam!
I think MOST athletes in any sport are ready and open to having a gay person as a teammate. We are going in the right direction.

jmarg25ParticipantHopefully in the near future, a player coming out will not be such a big shocking story in the sports world.

Lotto StudParticipantJohn Amaechi didn’t even get this much publicity, so I don’t understand why in this day and age it’s a huge storyline, when I would think in the era he played in it would be just as big of an issue similar to Magic Johnson’s HIV storyline.

llperezDifference is amechi was long gone by the time he came out. People are curious to see how it would play out with an active openly gay player. So far it looks like no one gives a crap which is good. It means probably in another decade, stuff like this won’t be a story.

ChrispyParticipantIt doesn’t matter that you don’t care. This young man has had to completely hide who he is. I come out as straight all the time, everyday in all the little things I do. When I hold my girls hand in public, when I shoot the breeze about women at work, etc. This kid now gets to truly live his life unfettered and without having to pretend to be someone he is not. That is why it is a story, and an important one for other youth dealing with the same issues and societal pressures of manhood. Care or don’t care. It still matters.

ChrispyParticipantbut it shoudn’t minimize the importance to those who are dealing with the same issues in their own lives. These stories need to be told so that others can begin to live their true lives. I’m glad you don’t care if someone is gay or not, that is how it should be. But to say it in the context of stories or reporting like this serves only to minimize the impact that they will have on society on a macro and micro level.

HitsterParticipantA person’s race, religion, sexuality has no part to play in any discrimation against him or her in their chosen sport. If people choose to reveal their sexuality or beliefs it is up to them.
