high floorParticipantDerrick Favors is a bit more of today’s trendy PF/C with size, strength, shot blocking, athleticism, and a slighly more smooth shooting stroke. Greg Monroe is a bit more a throwback in that he doesn’t use explosiveness or flash to be effective on offense or defense, but makes his impact with his b-ball i.q, rebounding, an array of post moves, and passing. So the question is.. who is the better current and long term prospect between these two high level Bigs?

Robb_CParticipantGreg Monroe.. Hes an intelligent ball player, and will have more success than Favors as he ages due to the fact Favors relys on his natural athletism which will start to fade as he gets older..

r377ParticipantI would agree with that. Monroe is a bit better offensively – shooting and passing. Favors is the better shot blocker. He is more athletic as said above which will start to decline.
Most teams would love to have either player on their squad, its a close call but I just give the edge to Monroe – not be much though….

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantClose call. I’d say both are basically finished products at this point and don’t anticipate either getting much better. I’d give the slight edge to Monroe because you can run your offense through him with his low post scoring and passing ability. Favors is the better defensive anchor though.

ZachAttackParticipantGreg Monroe is 25 and Derrick Favors is 24. We see players stop improving around the ages of 28-30. Favors and Monroe are still in their prime
Now, to answer the question. It’s an EXTREMELY close call. But since I’m a Jazz fan, I’ll give it to Favors. But I’m not just being a homer, I think that he has a bigger impact on the Utah Jazz as a team. While Monroe is putting up higher stats than Favors, he’s just not having as much of an impact on the Bucks as Favors is with the Jazz. I think that Favors also brings more intensity to the game especially this year. We’ve seen some really big emotions from Favors that Monroe just doesn’t have.
So while Monroe looks better on paper, Favors has a bigger impact and he just brings the spark that Monroe doesn’t possess.

Chilbert arenasParticipantI was always a Favors fan but he’s yet to put it all together the way I thought he would. I always thought his athleticism was a little overrated. He gets up but doesn’t get off the floor as quickly as youd like. Before the season started I was worried Drummond was heading down the Favors minimal double double road. Glad I was wrong. Monroes game will age well.

Rip256Favors easy.
It’s a wash on offense, but Favors mops the floor with Monroe on defense.

NBAjunkie81Participant3 seasons ago Favors emerged & his numbers are about the same as Monroe…. But Favors is part of one of the best defensive teams in the NBA (I realize the Amazing Rudy Gobert is the main reason but Favors is solid defensively)… So I would lean towards Favors…… Just a side note I would not call either man a "prospect" – they were both drafted in 2010 – I realize it’s semantics but both guys are just into those prime years 24 – 29….

King CaluchaParticipantI believe Favors’ defense is overrated. He’s good but not elite. On the other hand Monroe’s passing is underrated. Definitely a close call.
It’s harder to find a partner for Monroe for his lack of rim protection (his low post defense is OK), but I choose him based on his offensive prowess.

HeroescantdieParticipantWould depend on the team I’m going or playing style, With Monroe although you get more out of him offensively Favors has an advantage defensively. If I’m going to pick Monroe, I have to partner him to a defensive center to compensate his flaws, in Favors, it’s more complicated, if you put him next to a PF that’s a scorer and not that athletic I think he’s a bit undersize for center. If you partner him to a Brook Lopez or Okafor type, I think defensively he’s gonna held his own in a PF position but talking about Big Centers IMO he’s a bit undersize.
I’m gonna pick Monroe beacuse of his shooting and passing. He’s skilled enough to make an impact even he can’t jump, or outrun other Bigs

OhCanada-ParticipantFavors easy. Its not a wash on offense like rip said. Favors has come a long way offensively but he is not at the level of Monroe’s post game. Yet the key offensively is the type of offense each player creates.
Favors gets a lot of easy mid range jumpers, garbage layups, pin down or one dribble post scores, and penetration fed layups. He rarely stops the ball or flow of the offense. As his offensive game enhances he will expand his game and ideally get a lot of points off of a refined offensive game similar to Monroe’s. Yet at this point Monroe has the edge.
Rebounding is even.
Defense goes to Favors. He is a nightmare on the defensive end and I don’t see Monroe consistently defending at that level now or in the future.
Also Monroe seems like a finished product while Favors has just started to scratch the surface of his potential. Not to mention one plays out east one out west.

tuck243ParticipantI don’t like Greg Monroe’s game (never did really). He’s not athletic and doesn’t protect the basket. He’s not really long and although he has nice post moves, he doesn’t always convert.
Actually, that’s might be one of the most misleading things about him is his "nice" post game. He has good footwork, but outside of 3 feet and no more than 10, he’s well below average for his career (29%). So, how does a player that’s at his best inside the paint is shooting that terrible within 10 feet?
I personally wouldn’t want him starting on my team outside of the Blazers or the Wizards (teams that would have a position open for him). You have guys that’s can spread the floor out on the perimeter and can take over if need be. Outside of those teams, I think Greg Monroe should come off the bench. He’s simply not worth surrounding a starting offense around. He’s not that good and I have a feeling that he will be a luxury to have once he gets older/accept that particular role.
So, I guess I would rather have Favors by default.
Speaking of Monroe. Why 6 mans have to be guards? Why can’t the players be big men? Why not send a player like Monroe out there with the back ups to terrorize with? He’ll get his touches and can be the focal of the offense with the second unit. Look at Lamar Odom for example…
