nbastarParticipantYou shouldn’t be known for the worst thing you ever did. As Dan Gilbert flew in a private plane to meet LeBron James last Sunday, he made notes about things to say, things he had been thinking about for four years, since the night James announced on national TV he was leaving Gilbert’s Cleveland Cavaliers and taking “my talents to South Beach” and the Miami Heat.
Gilbert had watched this in Sun Valley, Idaho, then dashed to a computer and “in about 45 minutes” banged out an angry letter meant to reassure the fans. In it, he mocked the “King” and his nicknames, referred to his leaving as a “cowardly betrayal” and promised Cleveland would win a championship before James did.Source: http://nbasportupdates.blogspot.com/2014/07/dan-gilbert-tells-how-he-and-lebron.html

Ebown5ParticipantGilbert’s letter at the time was a real bonehead move. I think that it should have been obvious to anyone that he shouldn’t have done that. However, that being said, it was an emotional outburst by a guy who really cares and everyone makes mistakes.
I think that when owners like him, or Mark Cuban, fly off the handle it is really just a function of how much they care, and I think that it is generally refreshing to see owners like that. I would imagine that he apologized to Lebron(as he should have) and admitted that it was a stupid thing that he regrets, and Lebron is man enough to accept it, and believe him that his feelings were genuine.
Water under the bridge now…

xJumpManxParticipantAs a Cleveland fan I can say that letter was rally point for the fans. But Gilbert defininity made himself look fooish in the process he looked like he a scorned ex girlfriend. However the the claims it had racist tones were ridiculous and just used by those who like to claim everygthing is racist.

TarHeelRavenParticipantObviously, both felt lousy about their actions at the time. Dan Gilbert made an emotionally charged decision and wrote a dickish letter. Lebron made a PR mistake with his "taking his talents to South Beach" announcement. Both made mistakes. It takes a big person to own up to your mistakes and it seems like both Lebon and Dan Gilbert have done that. Now they can move onto more important things like winning basketball games and bringing a much needed championship back to northeastern Ohio.
