SwatLakeCityParticipantRead this article on NBA.com and then read my idea for Charlotte:
http://www.nba.com/2010/news/09/13/erick-dampier-contract.ap/index.html?cid=nba.2013“There has been reports the Bobcats could even acquire Denver forward Carmelo Anthony in a Dampier deal, or at least a starting point guard to replace departed free agent Raymond Felton.”
Now there is no way in hell that Melo would come to Charlotte. That is even worse than Denver. An even smaller market and they don’t even win. At least Denver wins. (Yes the Bobcats made the playoffs last year, but that was 7th in the East, and then they got ousted by the Magic, 4-0. Not even a contest. And if you look at their it was just barely above .500, if that’s winning then we must have very low expectations)
But there is a way that Charlotte can a starting PG instead of just handing the reigns over to inexperienced PG DJ Augustin. I’m not saying Augustin can’t handle starting, I just don’t believe he is quite ready and could use another year or two to develop and polish his skills. And certainly the Bobcats won’t start Shaun Livingston, he’s been in the league forever and has never reached his “potential” if he had any to begin with. (I honestly don’t understand why he was drafted so high in 2004, but that ‘s a topic for another day.
But what if Charlotte used Eric Dampier’s contract as a way to get TJ Ford. A Point guard that is in a bad situation, because Indy is not starting Ford when they just did a trade and received Darren Collison. He is the future PG of this franchise, not Ford. And he will not like playing backup. Just imagine the possibilities for Charlotte with a lineup of Ford, Jackson, Wallace, Tyrus Thomas, Nazr Mohammed. The only hole would be at Center with Mohammed and its not that big. They could always draft a center like Greg Smith in 2011 draft or Fab Melo.
Indy could also use Dampier because he is an experienced veteran who could help Roy Hibbert develop even more. Maybe he would help him obtain a better rebounding ability or help him be a better defender.
Now I know a straight up trade Dampier for Ford would not appease Indy or any team. So it would have to be a package deal, but I ‘m not quite sure what that package could be (Maybe you guys could come up with one). But thoughts on having TJ Ford in Charlotte or Dampier in Indy?

sheltwon3ParticipantBobcats have Livingston who plays point and if he is even 80 percent, he will start over Augustine who is more of a scorer. Also Ford and Augustine are similiar size and both defensive liabilities

lolyouthParticipantDenver will have to clean house and start re-building when Melo is gone anyway, so getting cap space via Dampier’s non-guaranteed contract is smart for Denver and awesome for Charlotte. Charlotte would be relevant if only for a short amount of time considering the ages of Stephen Jackson, Gerald Wallace, and Chauncey Billups. Still we saw them jump to the playoffs and good not great team with just Jackson and Wallace.
Imagine what a proven winner would do for them like Billups. I as a Charlotte fan would love it. (Yes I know they barely make the playoffs, but my team is my team, I’m loyal). Also, … T.J. Ford. He couldn’t get it done in Indiana with no one to challenge him, why is he the answer at PG for Charlotte. Oh, that’s right he’s not. He has underachieved at every stop in his career, don’t expect him to turn it around now. I like the Billups to Charlotte idea or us getting a young point guard who is one the rise like Eric Maynor (a NC native) from Oklahoma who proved he could start in Utah when Deron was absent for awhile.
Overall, Ford ain’t the answer. Denver rebuilding and getting cap space in a Dampier (just for his contract) for Billups trade would be good for both sides since Melo is leaving.
Please consider this from a Charlotte or Denver (in a rebuild mode) supporter’s perspective.0 - Posted on: Mon, 09/13/2010 - 8:59am #400151

PlatypusParticipantalso a good thing about the trade is that Billups knows Brown’s system and flourished in it

HitsterParticipantRod Higgins if he holds his nerve could get a great package for Dampier, remember what Oklahoma got when they took Kurt Thomas from Phoenix to provide cap relief. With the tax level being at around $70 million then Charlotte can maybe take back $ 8 million or so in salary and still not have to pay tax. Also they could package Diop’s big contract with Dampier and maybe take back up to $14 or $15 million in salary or they could become a 3rd team in any trade possibly for Melo and gain an asset or two.
Philly have some interesting assets and are one of the teams who are looking to rebuild but are near the luxury tax level. There could be deals there around Brand, Iggy, Diop, Diaw, Dampier etc.
Detroit are also perhaps looking to shed salary so there could be options there given Larry Brown coached Hamilton, Prince etc during their title year.

SwatLakeCityParticipantI guess Charlotte could become the third team in a trade for Melo. Chauncey would be better than Ford for Charlotte. And I am sure he would love to have another with Charlotte’s coach. Not my original idea, but this could work. Still have no idea what the actual trade would be. maybe later ill come up with it.

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantIf the Nuggets wanted to shed salary why would they trade for Dampier? They have the option on Billups contract for 2011 anyway. They could just not resign him or choose to trade him to someone else for far better of a package…
