McDunkinOn Friday, FIBA released its first “power ladder” (a.k.a. “power rankings”) for 2012 Olympic basketball; BallinEurope therefore thought to post a list of the seven Continental team rosters – plus, as a measuring stick, the pool for Team USA – as they currently stand.
Team rosters with last professional club alongside each player and coach are listed below in order of their FIBA ranking in parentheses. The FIBA system does come with a couple of caveats: 1) Not all teams are listed with Korea, Jordan, New Zealand (What? Come on, some respect for Kirk Penney!), Nigeria and Venezuela omitted; and 2) the rankings are based solely on wins and losses with no regard to level of competition. In the top spot is Nigeria, whose seemingly impressive 7-0 start represents seven mostly blowout wins against Chinese club teams. BiE reckons it’ll be quite some time before another table with Nigeria and Australia in the top spots, with France, Spain and Team USA in the cellar.

SubZeroParticipantMy roster if I was picking for USA:
PG: Chris Paul/Russell Westbrook/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Dwyane Wade/Eric Gordon
SF: Kevin Durant/Carmelo Anthony/Andre Iguodala
PF: Lebron James/Blake Griffin
C: Kevin Love/Tyson Chandler
I would like to see James Harden if we didn’t have so many great SGs though. I think his game would translate well to the way the Euros play. And I would also like to see how Anthony Davis would fare, but there just isn’t enough room. I couldn’t even decide who to take off this list to make it only 12 players

NbanflguyParticipantWhy is Lamar Odom on there?

NbanflguyParticipantNo way he stays on the team. I mean he got traded by the Lakers. There is no coming back from that. Plus playing with Kobe would probably bring back old memories and I think it would just be too painful for him.

HaleParticipantBecause he was on the last Olympic team and he can play all 5 positions, which is extremely useful. It’s doubtful that he’ll stay on the roster though because he sucks now.

bball89ParticipantWhat about Australia? They have the guy from Houston Rockets, Kyrie Irving, Andrew Bogut, and Patty Mills from the Spurs.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI think the only bigs that are set (other than LeBron and Carmelo who will both play some 4) are Tyson Chandler and Kevin Love. Then they have to decide between Blake, Bosh, and Anthony Davis. Maybe two of those three get picked.
If D Wade can’t make it due to his knee injury then it will come down to Iggy, Eric Gordon, and Harden with two of those three perhaps making the team.
I have Kobe, Chris Paul, D Will, and Westbrook as locks at guard with Durant as a lock too if D Wade isn’t there.
My locks: Chris Paul, D Will, Westbrook, Kobe, Carmelo, Durant, LeBron, Love, and Tyson Chandler. I am not including D Wade. I think he should rest his knee.
My last wing player in is Iggy. He is a small forward but he can also play some 2 plus some stretch four. He is a good defensive player, a glue guy, and a finisher. Having another true shooting guard behind Kobe isn’t important since they can put Westbrook at the 2 and even D Will.
Then I have Bosh over Blake as the 4th big. Bosh is great in international play. He has a great skill set including some range on his shot and he can also play center. My last guy in is Anthony Davis. He can run the floor and play above the rim. He can be effective without scoring which will be important here. He gives them another shot blocker beside Tyson Chandler and the third guy (Bosh too) who can play center. He is also long and agile enough to get out and guard some wings. Davis would be great as a defensive role player who can also do some damage in the boards. He can also give the team some alley oop dunks but is not a defensive liability like Blake Griffin. So if Wade can’t go this is my roster with Blake Griffin, Eric Gordon, and James Harden barely missing the cut.

Australia’s team is like this:
PG Patrick Mills/Adam Gibson
SG Brad Newley/Mathew Dellavadova/Peter Crawford
SF Joe Ingles/David Barlow
PF Matt Nielsen/Mark Worthington
C David Andersen/Aleks Maric/Aron Baynes
They have a very good roster.
