    34: Detroit Titans

Frontcourt- The Titans return their big in the middle, 6’10 245 Sr. Eli Holman. Holman, who started his career at Indiana 3 years ago, is a physically gifted PF/C prospect with athleticism. Holman shot 60% from the floor last year, and is a lefty who has a good strong-hand jump hook and the ability to finish down low with his length. He also is a shot-blocking threat in Horizon League competition and a very good rebounder, but he’s pretty left hand dependant and hardly a dominant player or true shot-creator at the C spot. He’ll probably be a 13 ppg, 10 guy who gets 2 bpg next year again. He’s an OK C prospect, worth keeping an eye on. At PF, Nick Minnerath mans the spot after a productive Fr. season. He’s a high motor player with inside-outside skills at 6’8 225. He is good at using his length as a finisher around the rim and both a pick and roll or pop threat. He’s not a great defender, rebounder, or passer though, but he does a good job of coming up with offensive rebounds and generally is at the right spots. These guys are talented players, but Detroit has very little depth in the frontcourt behind these 2 guys, which makes the guards have to work harder on the glass and on D than most others teams guards. They also added no frontline players in their recruiting class.

Backcourt- Tough to talk about Detroit without talking about super talented 6’1 tweener guard Soph. Ray McCallum. A rare McDonald’s American to go to a mid-major school like Detroit, McCallum was an immediate impact player in the Horizon League and looks to continue that trend. He’s an athletic and quick slashing guard with length, and the ability to easily get in the paint to make plays for himself and others. He excels in the drive and dish, and he was somewhat effective getting the ball to his frontcourt guys down low, and he’s clearly the best passer on the team. He’s not all that pure PG and he does get tunnel vision a bit though, and he’s a very mediocre shooter and finisher around the rim, but he does have upside. He should look to improve on D, get stronger, and cut down TO’s. Look for him to be a  17 ppg, 5 apg guy next year. He’s a 2012 or 2013 prospect more than likely. His best backcourt wingman was rising Sr. Chase Simon, a 6’6 SG. An aggressive SG who likes to shoot off the dribble, Simon has got to get better with his decision making as a passer and shooter and improve his D, were he was inconsistent last year. Also on the wing are 2 wings in 6’5 190 Chris Blake and 6’2 170 Jr. Jason Calliste, who both are effective scorers. They can hit the 3 and drive the lane, but need to work on his D like all of the Titans’ guards obviously. At PG, 5’8 150 Alvin Boutte is an incoming Fr. with great speed and handle. He’s small and not a shooter, but he figures to see a little time behind McCallum as the only other true PG on the roster. Detroit has a lot of scoring punch in their backcourt and tons of experience. McCallum is one of the better guard prospects out there, and a high level college guard. I like their backcourt a lot.

Overall- Detriot was a middle of the road team last year, but not one without talent on their roster. I look for them to improve and live up to the promise that they have on their roster. They don’t have the depth in the frontline to be a top team, but their guards will be very good and deep. If they get their decision making better across the board and defend the wings better, they can be a 2nd and out tourney team. I look for them to be one and done though.

"Great review but Minnerath is about to be a SENIOR, he played JUCO his first 2 years."

Thanks for the catch! I rushed through it.

"Good review..are writing these ur self or copying and pasting?"

Thanks. You could copy and paste this report, or parts of the report, and google it. If nothing comes up, then that means I didn’t copy and paste. I would feel 0 need to copy something I didn’t make myself.

"I feel like you do these just for the points…"

I bet you do. But I have 8000+ points. Why would I want to do a report just to get points? I’m way past caring about points at this time in my life…

With Milw and Butler losing a lot and Cole gone Is the Horizon Detroit’s to lose or do you see another team challenging?

I still think Butler wins the league. I trust Brad Stevens more than any coach our there. They won’t get to the Final 4, but I do think they make it to the tourny and could even get to the 2nd round.
