JNixonParticipantI left this out, and it threw off my whole Countdown
#31: Richmond Spiders
Frontcourt- 6’10 C/PF Justin Harper is the best frontcourt player they have (10 ppg, 5 rpg). He uses his length and touch around the rim well, has decent mid-range, and he has solid athleticism for a mid-major guy. He’s not really more than average on D or on the glass, but he’s a decent frontcourt player who’s improved a bit every year. The starting C is 6’9 260 Dan Geriot. Geriot isn’t a big talent and he isn’t a scorer or more than average rebounder, but his size/intimidating factor, and passing ability is a nice fixture in the starting line-up for the Spiders. He also likes to stretch and shoot jump shots, which is weird to say the least. Also in the fold will be role players in Jr.’s Darius Garrett, Francis-Cedric Martel, and Sr. Kevin Smith. Garrett is a 6’9 shot-blocking presence (14 blocks against UMass) who won’t score much, Martel is a guy who can score and rebound OK when he gets time on occasion, and Smith is a high-level athlete who can defend, play in transition and make momentum-changing plays in spurts. This group is an average role-playing group at best.
Backcourt- Kevin Anderson is very fast and aggressive. He was the A-10 P.O.Y last year (18 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.7 spg, 45% from the floor), and he provides incredible scoring ability in the A-10. He is a very good slasher who can be unstoppable when he knocks down his jump shots, and he plays good D too. He needs to improve his shooting range, and get a bit stronger to have a chance to last in the NBA but he’s a very good college player. The loss of Justin Gonzalez is a big loss in the backcourt, but Anderson looks like he’ll get even better next year in his stead. The starting SG will be Fr. Cedrick Lindsey I think. Lindsey is a good scorer who likes to slash to set up his shooting. He figures to have a slump at points in the year, but he should be a decent Fr. next year. This group has the P.O.Y in the fold, so they will already be one of the better backcourts in the A-10.
Overview- Richmond has some key guys returning, but I’d to see how they play without Gonzalez. I think they’ll be a low-seeded NCAA tourney team who gets knocked out in the 1st round.
