    33: Gonzaga Bulldogs

Frontline: This group loses Robert Sacre from last year, who was a big body and the most productive guy they had down low. They do return Jr. Elias Harris, a 6’7 215 combo forward. Harris is a pretty good athlete who plays with a motor, which helps him score without the ball and grab a good amount of boards, and he has developing shooting skills. However, he’s not more than alright on D right now (that should change though in some ways), is a rather shaky ball-handler and passer, and even though he’s very efficient he’s not a guy who projects to create his own shots very well in the NBA. Harris had a bad year last year, largely dealing with nagging injuries, but he has the talent to get back to where he was as a Fr. after regressing last year. He reminds me of Matt Barnes, a defensive-minded role player who tries hard and can make open shots reasonably. The big man will be 6’9 Sam Dower, who had a pretty good Fr. season after sleepwalking through the non-conference stretch, and emerging during the WCC slate. Dower is getting stronger, and he should get about 10 or 11 ppg and 5 boards next year with Sacre gone. On the wing, they have the intriguing Kelly Olynyk, and athletic wing Mangisto Arop. Olynyk is a  Jr. 6’11 215 swingman, who potentially can score inside and out. He has a soft shooting touch and a nice mid-range game, and his height allows him to get his shots off pretty easily, but he needs to get stronger, tougher and more aggressive on both ends. Olynyk has a chance to be an NBA prospect by his Sr. year due to his physical tools and shooting touch, despite his modest stats last year, and looks like a candidate to raise his production a bit for the 2nd straight year (I look for about 8 ppg and 5 rpg while shooting in the 40% range from 3). Arop is an athletic role player who will rebound and hustle from the wing.

Backcourt- Gonzaga has the unique task of replacing PG 5’11 Demetri Goodson, a relentless slasher. Goodson gave up the hardwood for cleats, and will suit up for the Texas A&M Aggies football team as a running back. Goodson wasn’t a real impact player, but his minutes on the table will mean time at the PG spot is probably going to be a position battle, but not one without talent and depth. They bring in a highly touted Canadian guard, in 6’2 175 Kevin Pangos. Pangos is extremely quick and a nice scorer with a streaky jumper who can get to the paint and create for himself and others. He can be a little wild and he needs more strength, but he should be an impact player for Gonzaga sooner rather than later. He’s seems like a Patty Mills-type prospect whenever I’ve seen him play. Incumbent Marquise Carter, a 6’4 185 Sr. will fight for the position though. Carter is a bigger guard and he can play minutes at the 2 spot, like Pangos can. He doesn’t stand out anywhere though, but he’s a solid all-around player with some leadership skills. Another option is David Stockton. Sound familiar? Yeah, the son of former Utah Jazz great John Stockton, will be in the rotation as well. A 5’10 155 waterbug, Stockton is a promising shooter with nice quickness, who will compete and play hard. He’s not very talented, and he can struggle on D at times, but he takes care of the ball and is smart. The SG spot could also have a position battle, with sharpshooter Steven Gray departed. 6’2 Fr. Gary Bell Jr. is another highly regarded player who will contribute early. Bell has a wiry strong 175 lb frame, likes to look for his own shots and is a nice shooter, but he isn’t a great defender yet. He will face competition with 6’6 Soph. Mathis Monninghoff, an athletic jump shooter. Also looking to figure in the SG rotation are Carter and Pangos, both who can slide there for minutes, and Olynyk and Arop, who both will likely see limited time at the SG spots despite being more SF than SG.

Overview- Coach Few may have bad teeth and what looks to be bad breath, but he’s an elite “mid-major” level coach. Gonzaga is just about always relevant in the NCAA talks despite playing in a weak conference, and this year won’t be much different. They lose Sacre and Gray, but with the guards they have in the fold they should overcome that relatively well. Harris will need to rebound from his bad Soph. season, but he should be healthy enough to do so. I look for them to be a great regular season squad as usual, and I see them as a team who has a chance to steal 1 game in the tourny.

Sacre is not gone he was given a medical redshirt his sophomore season

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Sacre

Sacre committed to NCAA Division I squad Gonzaga University prior to the 2007-08 season.[2] He came off the bench in his freshman season, averaging nine minutes of action per game in 2007-08. In 2008-09, he broke his foot three games into the season and was later granted a medical redshirt.

Sacre came back strong in the 2009-10 season, averaging 10.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game as the Bulldogs’ starting center.[3]

Would this change your ranking of them, Carter, Sacre, and Harris is a pretty damn good top 3.

Some might laugh but David Stockton played well in limited minutes last season…

He knew when and where each player should get the ball to be succsessful….It’ll be interesting to see what he can do playing 20 to 25 minutes a game this year…

^Why wouldnt David play more than 20 minutes? Last season he averaged 15 minutes a game..And whenever he entered the game and they were trialing his play gave the team a boost…

He played 15 mpg last year, but they added Kevin Pango and Carter emerged at both the guard spots. He’ll play around 15-18 mpg, but the point guard spot will be improved so he won’t be playing alot more.

I think he’ll definitely play at least 20 minutes… probably 25-30 minutes.  He is better than Pango.

Stockton is going to start at PG.

JNix you must didnt watch Gonzaga last season?  In limited minutes last year,Stockton proved he’s capable of being a starter, so i expect him to get 1st crack at the starting pg spot..I’m not saying he’ll finish the season being the starter..But he proved he can run their offense..His lack of strength and height will hurt him on the defensive end…

I watched them play my favorite team (Kansas State), OK State, and I watched both of their tourny games. He’s not a 20 mpg player, or a 25-30 mpg player. He’s a classic overachiever who is tiny, and Kevin Pangos is better than him and so is Carter. Stockton played last year because they lacked PG play, I believe he was a walk-on as it was. They addressed the guard spots in recruiting, and his time probably won’t grow all that much if at all.

I’m not even saying Stockton is that good.  I’m just saying Gonzaga doesn’t have any better options.

Gray played 31 minutes a game last season & Goodson played 22.  Thats 53 minutes that have to replaced among the guard spots.

Carter played 19 mins per game, Stockton played 15 mins per game.

I have a hard time believing that Few is going to let Pangos start as a Freshman & get big minutes.  Just don’t see it.  Bell will get some playing time but he is a SG.

Carter is going to have to play around 34 mins this season.

Stockton should at least get 20 minutes minimum easy.  There is just too many minutes available.

^ Big reason why I think Gonzaga is being overrated by the media a little preseason.  Andy Katz has them ranked 25th.  I’ve got them ranked 38th.
