    27: Mississippi State Bulldogs

Frontcourt- A lot of talent in this frontline. They lose a key contributor in Kodi Augustus, a 6’8 forward who finally lived up to his HS hype and was a consistent contributor for the Bulldogs as a Sr. Of the returning players, the big name, of course, is Jr. Renardo Sidney. Sidney is a 6’10 260 PF/C with huge talent. He has a nice touch, which helps him around the rim and as a jump shooter where he has legit range out to about 23 feet. For such a big guy Sidney also has very light feet, and is able to execute very effectively down low in combination with his length and wide frame. Sidney contributes as a rebounder, and when he decides to pass he is also effective. He doesn’t decide to often though, is an extremely nonchalant defender, and he is also a little bit prone to floating on the perimeter more than a guy his size should. On top of his questions as a player, Sidney will have to watch his conditioning and has the type of body that can blow up, and there are some questions about his work ethic as well. Add in his well-documented maturity issues and you have legit questions about him. Sidney is certainly a top 10 talent with promise as a scorer, but his character, effort and work ethic concerns have always clouded him. He could be anything from a lottery pick, to a 2nd rounder. The PF spot likely will be manned by another enigma, UTEP transfer 6’10 240 Jr. Arnett Moultrie. Moultrie has intriguing physical tools and ball skills, and drew NBA attention as a starter for a good UTEP squad 2 years back. He can face up and post some, and he’s a good athlete with length. Being out a year practicing with the team should help his polish and strength some, because he wasn’t quite refined or strong before. Moultrie was a bit soft and lacked aggression for someone with his upside at UTEP. He also underachieved on D and was just decent on the glass. He has the talent to be a draft choice in 2013. Providing depth will be 7’1 Jr. John Riek and 6’8 240 C Wendell Lewis. Riek is terribly unskilled on both ends and he played extremely limited time because of it, but his length and athleticism make him a shot-blocking presence whenever he’s on the floor. Lewis is a physical, limited back to basket player with decent rebounding skills. Sidney and Moultrie are all NBA prospects (Rodney Hood will play some SF too, and is a long term prospect), but there is limited depth here.

Backcourt- The main loss in this group is Ravern Johnson. Johnson was a sharpshooter who could put points on the board quickly with his jumper. They will be able to replace him though, at least almost. The PG spot will be manned by Sr. Dee Bost, a very talented guard who has had an interesting past 2 years. I’ve always been a fan of Bost’s talent, and after being reinstated by the NCAA he produced some. He was rusty, and inefficient though. Bost is a quick, athletic PG who can both score and set up guys very well. He’s aggressive and has a nice shot too, which makes him tough to guard. But, he is a very shaky decision-maker though, and is thus turnover prone. He also is a bad defender, who gambles too much. Bost could be a 2nd round pick in 2012 though, he reminds me of a poor mans Brandon Jennings. Miss. State probably will play 3 guard line-ups a lot. The SG spot will be a position battle between Soph. Jalen Steele, Sr. Brian Bryant, and Fr. Deville Smith. Steele was a rotation player as a Fr., and contributed too. He has a nice shot and is smooth, but he has to continue to grow up on both ends, where inexperience limited his efficiency. Bryant was a JUCO transfer who played the 3 perimeter spts last year. He’s a tough slasher who competes on D, but he isn’t a confident shooter. Smith is a scoring guard that can both PG or SG at 6’0 180. He is pretty thin and weak though, so he’ll have to get stronger to play more. Fr. Rodney Hood was a highly touted 5-star prospect, and he will be given a bunch of chances to win the SG/off-guard spot that Ravern Johnson held down for 3 years. Hood is a skinny 6’8 185 wing with a sweet jump shot, good length, and very good athleticism. He will be able to get out and do some things in transition. He, however is a below average ball-handler, and his lack of strength will likely prove hard to overcome by the SEC slate on both ends. Look for him to contribute about 8 ppg and 4 rpg as a Fr. Also, fellow Fr. DJ Gardner will compete for time at the SG/SF spot too. At 6’6 205, Gardner is has solid size for an incoming guy, and will be able to play some. Gardner was one of the better shooters in the 2011 class in HS, and a promising defender. He’s a bit one-dimensional on offense though, and isn’t a ball-handler. He plays a similar game to a guy like Martell Webster. Mississippi State has depth and good talent in the backcourt.

Overall- Rick Stansbury. If you can’t get this team to the tournament, you deserve to never coach at this level again. They is talent at nearly all spots on the floor, although the SG spot is a bit shallow. Sidney, Moultrie, Hood and Bost are all NBA-caliber talents. None of them play very good D though. Nobody on Mississippi State’s team is an accomplished defender. I like Mississippi State’s upside and they have players, but I see them as a 1-and-done or 2-and-out team. I don’t think Stansbury gets this team to defend good enough to get to the 2nd week of the tourny. Despite all the talent.

State has a great Frontcourt with Sidney and Moultrie. If Sidney has gotten his act together, Miss State will be a team nobody wants to play. They have size and athleticism. Hood had alot of Hype coming out of High School, it will be interesting to see what he does this year. This team will go as Sidney goes.  He can be a savior or a cancer.

    Good breakdown iggy.

Your analysis of Sidney and Moutrie is right on the money..Sidney can be as good as he wants to be..He reminds me a little of Derrick Coleman…If he cleans up his act,get into condition and work on his post defense..He has not only a chance be SEC Player of the Year but also an All American candidate… Despite not playing ball in almost 2 year and clearly not in shape..He did look impressive at times..

Dee Bost carried this team at times last season…But if they depend on him as much this season they’re not going to be that good..He shooting keep them in some games and his shooting too much cause them to lose some games…

They’re going to miss Augustus who i think was the glue of last year’s team…

Moutrie is very athletic, can hit 3 pointers, but is very raw and must add some muscle..He’s 6’10 and 220lbs and struggled defending stronger players in the post..

Miss. State might start the season in the top 30,but by season end they have the talent to be a top 10 team…

Bost is definitely one of the most underrated players in the country, he has improved his ppg and apg every year for his first three years

Lol, that should read: Sidney, a 6’10 PF/C who is targeting a weight of 260, but will more than like play around 275-280. Reports surfaced that he’s somewhere above 300 pounds currently, and as high as 320. In all seriousness though, if he’s not in shape, this teams potential is drastically reduced.

Mississippi State has the potential to be a top ten team with the talent to make a deep run in the tournament this season. With Bost, Moultrie, Sidney, and Hood…Mississippi State has one of the most talented teams in the country with depth and desire to defend being the major question mark.

Dee Bost – Smart, athletic, fearless, and aggressive point guard who has been throught the wars. Expect him to lead and lead in a big way. He’s good enough to go toe to toe with any pg in the country.

Sidney – Character issues aside, Sidney is a top 10 talent in anybody’s draft. If he can put it all together and stay the course the entire year, he and the MSU will be a force to reckon with all year long.

Moultrie – 6’11, long, athletic, skilled, plays hard, plays above the rim, and has put on about 15 pounds of muscle since he last suited up for UTEP. Pick and pops/roles with him will be a sight to see.

Hood – Even as a 5 star, he’s still highly underrated. Long, athletic, can stroke it from three, fills it up from midrange, thinks the game, handles EXTREMELY well, defends…and he’s 6’8 with a great motor. Expect Hood to have an exceptional freshmen year.

A lot has to come together for these things to fall in place but we can say the same thing about 99.9% of every other team in the country. Bottom line, there is serious potential in Starkville.

Rodney Hood, even as a 5-star prospect, is highly underrated.
