    26- Villanova Wildcats

Frontcourt- They don’t have a Taylor King-type stud, which is why they aren’t in the top 5. Just kidding. Their guys aren’t great individual talents nor do they possess explosive upside, but they do have guys who compliment their guards well. The starter C figures to be Soph. Mouphtaou Yarou, a physically gifted bruiser down low. Yarou is a strong post defender with his 6’10 250 frame, and he’s not bad athletically either for his size. He also has a surprisingly decent mid-range game. Still, Yarou is extremely rough around the edges as a player. He’s very robotic in his post moves, doesn’t look like he’ll ever be a very good offensively, and he’s a decent, but not great rebounder for someone with his size. Yarou is an NBA prospect, and could be a 5th option post defender in time. He cut down on fouls significantly last year, which is a promising development. The PF rotation figures to be a “committee” approach with wiry Maurice Sutton, Fr. bruiser Jayvaughn Pinkston, tweener Isaiah Armwood. I think Pinkston wins the starting job. Sutton, a 6’10 210 Soph., is a long shot-blocker lacking the strength to play/finish with his back to the basket and the perimeter skills to stretch on PF/C’s, so he’s not a very good offensive player. Pinkston, a former Mickey D’s AA, is a 6’6 250 PF who missed last year. Pinkston shows surprising perimeter skills for a big guy, and he’s also a sold post player too. He’s very strong and tough, and thus is able to drive the lane with reckless abandon against PF’s and SF’s, and he can hit spot-up 3’s. He also rebounds well. Pinkston is not an athlete really, or an accomplished defender though, although he fares better against PF’s than wings. Expect about 7 or 8 ppg and 5 rpg from him. Armwood has nice upside and could see more time at SF next year too, and he is a potential mismatch at the PF spot with his quickness and handle. Right now though, at 6’7 180, he’s a bit too weak to play effectively at the PF spot for more than spurts and he doesn’t have polished enough perimeter skills to play on the perimeter exclusively either. He really should improve his shot and handle more. At SF, Soph. James Bell will play more next year. He has a ready-for-Big-East 6’5 210 body that packs a bunch of strength for a young guard. He’s an OK slasher and a solid and tough defender. Physical player. Armwood will also play here some. This group has nice role-players and depth. Coach Wright will need to manage rotation minutes carefully.

Backcourt- The loss of Fisher is a gift and curse. On one hand, Fisher was a productive 4-year player for Villanova and one of the better scorers in school history. On the other though, he was a shaky decision maker and he forced action alot at the worst times during his last 2 years. They can replace him. The 6’0 190 Wayns is going to have the keys to the offense now. A Jr. who has talent and a strong build that resembles a running back, Wayns is aggressive slashing to the rim. He possesses a big-time 2nd gear, and loves to push the ball down the defenses throat if they don’t get back on D. He doesn’t do a great job of playing at a bunch of different speeds though, and thus he can be inefficient and turnover prone. Wayns will need to improve his shooting skills and prove he can be a true PG. Still, I could see Wayns putting up about 18 or 19 ppg next year as a scoring and playmaking guard. I think he’s in for a similar season to the one Kemba Walker just had, but not quite like that. He doesn’t have that kind of handle or will to win. The SG spot will bank on the development of James Bell (who will play here too) and Dominic Cheek. The Jr. Cheek is former Mickey D’s and a T.I. look-alike. He has nice size at a rangy 6’6 190, decent athleticism, and promising shooting skills (even with his awkward, almost Lace Dunn-esque form), and he’s also a willing defender, even though he does needs some more time to improve more on that end. He really needs to improve his ball-handling ability, physicality, and strength some more to take his game to the next level. The guard group has its usual nice starting talent, and they have the swingmen to play different lineups. The wild cards are Cheek and Bell, who will have to up production with Fisher and Stokes gone.

Overview- Villanova is hard to read. They got to the Final 3 seasons back, and then didn’t get past the 1st week 2 years in a row. Last year’s team was way too talented to get knocked out after the 1st round. Last year as a whole was marred by underachievement. For as good a college player as Corey Fisher was at times, he really was selfish a lot and generally was a bad decision-maker. I think he can be replaced with Wayns and their developing wings. This year’s team has great size and they won’t be marred by wild, ball-stopping guards. This just seems like the type of squad that Jay Wright would do his best coaching job with for some reason. I see Villanova as a Sweet 16 team. Look for Wayns to have an All-American type year as well.

*Edit: Maurice Sutton is a Jr., and Isaiah Armwood is about 195. Sorry about that.

O ya this is probably the biggest hit or miss team in the country, they have tons of unproven talent offensively which could lead them to the sweet sixteen or NIT. I think the only two sure things here are that Yarou will be a defensive beast and Wayns will score the rock.

Watch out for freshman point guard Tyrone Johnson… He led Montrose Christian to the the National High School Championship and was the MVP. Very under the radar guy( for some reason) who is a combo guard and a superb athlete. Unlike Corey Fisher, he plays under control and is a much better shooter although he does need to learn how to better balance scoring and distributing from the point guard position.

No mention of Tyrone Johnson. Johnson is a strong guard, who can penetrate well, and really play some defense when focused. He will definitely be in the rotation. He will be the only real ball-handler after Wayns. This will be a make or break season for Cheek. He has some kerry kittles to his game, just not quite as athletic.

Pinkston will be a good addition very strong and agressive especially on the glass. He reminds me of Anthony Glover from St. Johns. I know they list Pinkston at 6’6 but he looked more like 6’4 when I saw he last season. Maybe he can be a baby Barkely.

Tyrone Johnson was a star quarterback, and point guard in New Jersey, before going to Montrose Christian. Many thought he would lean towards football. In Jersey he in played in the backcout with Iaisiah Epps who will be playing at Pitt this coming season. I would not say he is a better shooter than fisher. He may have better shot selection, but jumper for jumper Fisher is the better shooter now. He is definitely more bigger, athletic, and more defensively focused than fisher.

Yeah i’m a fan of Johnson. I really say major leadership and charisma on that kid. I’ll have my eye on him.

I’d also really like to see Cheek break out this year. You’re right he has great potential on the defensive end. This is the year for him to start rounding out.

Jnixon you really had me with that Taylor King remark starting out haha

I thought about including something brief about Johnson, but I haven’t seen him play ever. He probably will play though if he’s a combo guard, since Villanova has time available at the SG spot, and since Wayns isn’t that pure a PG he could see time there as well. That is if he’s actually good.
