JNixonParticipant14- Florida Gators
Frontcourt- This goes from a super experienced group to a very depth deprived unit. They lose SEC Player of the Year Chandler Parsons, and their other 2 starters on the frontline Vernon Macklin and Alex Tyus. Parsons was a big all-around talent who was the 38th pick in the draft to the Houston Rockets, and Vernon Macklin went 52nd to the Pistons. Tyus should be able to play overseas or semi-pro as well. They lost ALOT here, and on top of not having many bodies, not alot of the depth played much last year. They do return 6’9 245 Soph. Patric Young, who was apart of the rotation last year and who played for the U19 team this summer in hopes to speed up his development, is expected to be the guy in the middle for Florida next year. Young is a bulldog who makes athletic and explosive plays at the rim, plays with high-level energy, and has a body that’s beyond his years. Young rebounds very well and is a shot-blocking presence. He’s very strong and super physical. But with his energy, relatively low basketball IQ, and physicality, comes fouls and Young is a very foul prone player. It limited his PT last year, and he will have to be careful that it doesn’t this year as there isn’t much behind him, especially defensively. Young is also a project on offense too, showing shaky touch and only having a basic jump hook in his arsenal (though he can make it with both hands) and basically being a catch and finish player right now. He will have to grow up fast, probably by the conference slate by the latest (which is a tough expectation). Also in the frontline rotation is 6’10 215 PF Erik Murphy, who will see more extended minutes this season. Murphy is a stretch 4 who likes to play on the perimeter as a floor spacer. He has a nice shot, but he lacks strength and toughness to contribute much outside of his shot. Soph. Casey Prather will probably need to play more on the wing, and Soph. Will Yeguete will need to provide as a combo forward. The 6’6 195 Prather is very athletic and long, as well as a promising perimeter defender. He won’t show much offensive ability (for the foreseeable future at least) other than transition play though. Yeguete, at 6’7 220 is a solid athlete who’s pretty strong and plays with energy on the glass and on D. He’s not offensive minded at all. This unit is alot weaker, although Young will be asked to provide more. They lack size in a major way.
Backcourt- This group alot of talent and experience, and they are led by Sr. PG Erving Walker. Erving Walker is a fun-to-watch 5’6 PG who has crazy handle and quickness, and he is a confident shooter/player. He also is generally a hard-working on-ball defender, which helps make up for his lack of size to an extent at times. Still, he is prone to being scored over and/or overpowered, he’s not a pure PG or playmaker for others, he’s limited finishing around the rim because of his ridiculously small body, and he suffers from spotty shot selection when shooting the ball, which hurts his efficiency even though he has a pretty nice shot with NBA range. Walker will always have limits at his size, but he’s a fun player to watch despite his mildly erratic style of play. He really wants to win and is tough as nails. 6’2 180 Jr guard Kenny Boynton returns as a 3rd year starter, after not improving much from his Fr. Year like I expected. Boynton once again gives you a really inefficient 14 ppg (at 38%, 33% from 3) and will shoot the ball almost every time it comes his way. Boynton, nonetheless, has a good natural jump shot from the perimeter and gets his points in bunches, and is actually a pretty good defender with solid athleticism (more so when he has a head of steam). He has a cocky/confident demeanor on the court that can be a gift and curse. He’s not exactly unselfish or a great ball-handler for a 6’2 “combo-guard” though, and he’ll always have questions about his NBA future until he works that out, among other things. Also in the guard spots will also see time for Mike Rosario, touted Fr. Brad Beal, and Soph. Scott Wilbekin. The 6’1 rJr. Rosario, a proven college scorer and Rutgers transfer, figures to be a starter in the backcourt too. Rosario is a quick and super aggressive slashing guard who understands how to put the basketball in the hoop. He’s got good athleticism and a good shot too. Rosario doesn’t play much D and can be wild and prone to taking bad shots and turning the ball over, but he’s a big talent offensively. Chandler Parsons has said this off-season Rosario will lead the SEC in scoring, high praise considering the shot-happy guards they have and the fact that John Jenkins suits up for Vandy this year, but you get the point. 6’4 200 Fr. Brad Beal will factor immediately, and he probably will have to defend the bigger wings UF faces as the biggest guy in the backcourt. Beal is the highest rated recruit UF has pulled in in quite some time, and he’s a very strong all-around talent for his age. He’s physically strong and ready to compete in the SEC, and his great jump shot is likely to be the most efficient on the team (looking at you, Boynton). He can pull-up from mid-range, hit the deep ball, is a solid passer, and a good defender too. He also is smart in his decisions on the floor. Beal, a good but not great athlete, needs to work on his handle to reach his potential as a slasher. Beal may be in Gainesville for 2 years as opposed to 1, but he’s a likely top 10-20 pick whenever he declares, at least. A former walk-on, the 6’1 Wilbekin will see minutes as a backup PG, like he did last year, but he’s a wee bit on the sucky side. Prather will play sparse time at SG. Talented backcourt, full of explosive firepower offensively. They don’t have a bunch of size here, but they will be able to compete with any team nationally scoring the ball.
Overview- Billy Donovan did a great job last year I think. He is clearly a charismatic coach who has his players’ interest at heart, and he has a loaded backcourt this year. The frontcourt is a bit empty, especially given their headliner is foul prone and not a good scorer on offense. I think big teams with athleticism will punish them and they could get exposed by some teams in the SEC slate. I think Florida is a 1-and-done or 2 and out team.

Chilbert arenasParticipantI really think Florida can contend with Kentucky for the SEC title, not saying they’re the more talented team nor the better team, but I could see Kentucky hitting some speed bumps on the way with their youth.

JNixonParticipantFlorida has to worry about Vandy too. They match up well with Vandy though, but Kentucky has the combined size and athleticism to hold Florida off.

providencefriars1ParticipantI’m not really sure Murphy will play more since he was arrested a few months ago for breaking into cars
