Whether games are played in the informal settings of a basketball court at a local park/gym or the more formal atmosphere of college ball/NBA, comunication among teammates on the court is a significant part of the game, especially on the defensive end. What are some common terms/phrases your hear/say to your teammates on the defensive end? I hear things like:

"By youself" to indicate a teammate defending on-ball that they no one is around to set a screen

"left" or "right" to let the teammate know where the pick is coming from

"trap" to double team an on-ball player for the steal

Talking on D is sooo important. It really should be taught at a very young age.

I’ve gotten in the habit of calling out "skip!" when the player I’m defending throws a skip pass. You can usually tell by the look in their eyes that they aren’t passing to a player directly adjacent to them. It usually gives the player who is/will be defending the player who is receiving the skip pass a heads up, and even sometimes leads to them tipping the pass or stealing it.

umm…"Shot?" haha, there used to be a guy I played with that not only yelled shot when he contested a shot but then yelled "release!" when he darted to the other end hoping for an easy lob and layup. Never worked.

"backside" when you’re fronting the post and need help from a possible lob.

calling "outlet" after a rebound to start a fast break.

There’s plenty more, but…the WNBA (!!!!!!!!!!) is quite the distraction atm

I’m a pretty horrible on defense so talking on D is the only way I can manage.

I often say: "help left/right" when I’m guarding a strong guy and he beats me off the dribble.

If I see a ridiculously tough pick coming, I yell "switch".

Talking on defense: making terrible defenders look just mediocre.

"GO" when I know I can get the rebound and push the break more effectively when guys are up the court

"Kobe" when I get in Chuck mode"

"Billups" on my pull up 3

"wolf" for when a guy is running the break and a defender is coming in from behind for the steal.

I usually call ‘short’ or ‘long’ when i shoot a three as I’m usually way off so my teammates can anticipate the ball not hitting the rim 🙁

Or when you have someone that doesn’t ever get back on D and your yelling "Who’s man is that?!"

this might sound pretty dumb but i use it a lot.

when i see a shot go up and only one of my teammates is around the hoop i tell him to "get that bound"… like letting him know if he doesn’t get it it will probably result in an offensive rebound for the other team.

    :/

When I used to practice as part of the scout team, occasionally we would throw the team for a loop when we would make animal noises on defense.

Meowing meant dead ball, woof was skip pass, and hee-haw left/right was a screen.

We saw it as a way to force the team to focus on their offense rather than be distracted by random chants from fans on the road.

Just yell "ICE" over and over, seems to work for Thibs.

cutter, switch, pick left/right, double, help – when getting beat, no middle, box out, ball, shot, by yourself, stay down

When we strip a player of the ball on D, we say cookies! Does anyone else say it also?
