It’s this decade that this cycle of curse has been ongoing. Ever since Doc Rivers won the Coach of the Year award, the next to follow seem to have a very good chance of getting booted out or resigned from their head coaching position right after. It’s an ongoing debacle that seems to happen in this decade. With the exception of Gregg Popovich who won it in 2003, let’s run down these coaches who, after winning the prestigious award, find themselves out of work…Well, at least for a while…

1999-2000 COY: Doc Rivers, Magic… He got fired on November 17, 2003 after struggling to keep the Magic afloat…

2000-2001 COY: Larry Brown, 76ers… He resigned on May 25, 2002. After leading the Sixers to a Finals appearance, Larry Brown’s relationship with AI dismantled quickly after that “practice” thing…

2001-02 COY: Rick Carlisle, Pistons… He got booted out on May 31, 2003. Even though he did a good job at Detroit, he just wasn’t a championship-caliber type of coach.

2003-04 COY: Hubie Brown, Grizzlies… He did a stellar job with the Grizzlies transforming them into a playoff team… But he just couldn’t keep the momentum going even with Pau Gasol. He resigned on November 24, 2004 and became an analyst for ABC.

2004-05 COY: Mike D’Antoni, Suns… He left the team on May 9, 2008 and transferred to a lowly team with the Knicks in hopes to find a greener pasture. He just couldn’t lead the Suns to the Finals especially against a tough but boring Spurs team.

2005-06 COY: Avery Johnson, Mavs… A very good coach who led the Mavs to their lone Finals appearance… He just couldn’t do it again and after faltering against the Golden State Warriors in the first round upset in 2007+a poor performance against NOH in 2008 both in the first round, Avery got fired on April 30, 2008…

2006-07 COY: Sam Mitchell, Raptors… He did shock the world and help lead the Raptors back into playoffs. But after losing to that Nets game where VC just made a clutch alleyhoop play, the team couldn’t just get it going… He was kicked out on December 11, 2008.

2007-08 COY: Byron Scott, Hornets… They’re no longer threats of the West and after Chris Paul went down with an injury, Scott has got to go on November 12, 2009.

So what’s next? My hypotheses is, IF Mike Brown could not get the Cavaliers back to the Finals… He will be among this people listed down here…

Last question: Do you still think Jerry Sloan needs to get this Coach of the Year award after these string of curses?

This happens in MLB as well and I think it’s because the COY award goes to the coach that made a team way better than anyone thought they would be. He did a lot with a little talent, essentially meaning he overachieved. This means DOOM! You can have a good, surprising year, but to then stay consistently good over several years when other teams a) see you coming and b) modified their gameplan against you is really hard.
Also Rivers/Carlisle first year COY, Brown/D’antoni/Johnson in their first FULL year so they came in, changed some things, became a surprise team, then had to continue overachieving in order to keep their job

I was trying to remember where i first saw this, its like the Madden curse for the NBA. I can actually see it happening again if Scott Brooks and the Thunder have a bad or mediocre year next season.
