I was looking up some scouting reports & watching some film on this kid & he looks like somebody who could be a problem in the future with his scoring ability. You would never think this kid was a freshman last season.

Lebron averaged 21 points per game as a freshman….Malik averaged 23. (NO Im not saying he will ever be as good as Lebron haha but still impressive as hell)

    Some reports on him:

    Strengths:
Malik Newman is a great athlete who can score at will. He has a great first step and can get anywhere on the floor he chooses. He loves to get out on the break and attack the rim where he has the uncanny ability to finish through contact. He has a great double move off the bounce and a beautiful pull up jumper. He is one of the top three-point shooters in the class. At the pace he is on, he has all the makings of becoming a professional.

With Malik, scoring is the name of the game. He has that knack for putting the ball in the basket. His mid-range game is terrific and he can shoot jumpers out to 20 feet. He can create his chances off the dribble and is just wired to score. Not afraid to stick his nose in and rebound, either.

    Weaknesses:
Must learn how to play without the ball in his hands more often. He also needs to improve his on-ball defense.

He would do well to improve his decision making and other lead guard skills, including creating for others. He does seem to possess a good basketball IQ. Defensively, the effort and intensity is just not there yet. He’s a good, not great, athlete.

He is already 6 foot 3 so if he does continue to grow that will def benefit him as a SG, but he still has plenty of time to work on his PG skills if he is done growing. I expect him to receive some major hype in the upcoming seasons.

He’s got such a pretty J that he can get off in a variety of ways. IMO, If Malik wants to reach his potential he needs to improve on everything outside of his ability to score.  He’s already heard the criticisms about his game and questions regarding his ability to make players around him better.

I’m interested to see how he responds to those criticisms and if he eventually becomes a more well-rounded player.

Malik is currently ranked #1 in the 2015 Class by NBADraft.net and I think he is a kid who will stay near the top of his class the next couple of years. His father was Horatio Webster, who was listed at 6-7 and 240 pounds upon his graduation from Mississippi State in 1998. Malik just got invited to the 2012 USA Men’s Developmental National Team and is listed as 6-4/185. My guess is, he is not done growing just yet and may indeed end up being even closer to his fathers height.

My guess is that Malik will be on the 2013 USA U16 team this upcoming summer with a good chance of being the teams leading scorer. It is a while away, just know that being born in 1997, he will be eligible and should follow in the long line of successful prospects playing USA Basketball at a young age. He has already held his own in the U17 Division of the Nike EYBL (though one should note that the Jackson team was not great, though they have a lot of promising upcoming prospects) and he looks like he has the makings of a strong scoring guard. The LeBron thing may have been a tad much, lol, but he definitely had a great freshman season and will be a big name on the radar these next few years.

Newman, Towns, Rabb, Mitchell (aka the great white hope) and Ben Simmons are my favorite players in this class.
