I’m reposting my rant from yesterday’s post about the ref in the Lions game –

One of the worst calls ever in football or any sport.

The thing that EVERYONE missed the boat on with this is that it shouldn’t have had anything to do with that rule.

"If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball after he touches the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete."

Everyone excused that call saying it was the right call but the rule is bad. WRONG. That rule shouldn’t have even applied to that play. Had he come down on his butt without having two feet down first then the rule would apply and the call would have been correct.

He had two feet down and then fell to his butt all the while maintaining possession (at which point it was a TD) and then rolled and put the ball to the turf. At that point he could have thrown the ball into the stands, or slammed the ball to the ground in celebration and it’s a TD. Terrible call, and there’s no way anyone can convince me they take the TD away from a team like New England, New Orleans or Indy. The Lions finally win a road game after 2 years and they get robbed. Inexcusable.

What is THE worst call ever in any sport? (Post youtube clips if you can) For me Roy Jones Jr. losing in the 1988 Olympics comes to mind.

I think it was Missouri vs. Colorado in 1990 where they gave Colorado a 5th down to win the game.

After looking at it again, Calvin was robbed. He had possession of the ball before he starting falling.

I tried finding video of the Jerome Bettis Thanksgiving coin coss botched call couldn’t find one. Bettis clearly calls tails during the coin toss in OT vs the Lions but the ref says he’s called heads. It lands tails and he awards the Lions with the toss. They obviously elect to receive in and kick a game winning FG on first possession.

I believe the right call was made. The rule is the rule. Yeah it sucks because he had control but the ball can’t hit the ground. For example what if he really had to jump high for it and even if he had control in the air when he hit the ground the ball went loose, that would be incomplete. Similarly if you allow this to be a catch than that would then support the rule to allow guys to use the ball against the ground to support themselves from losing control. It sucks for the Lions because in this instance he didn’t have to make a huge acrobatic catch and was in control. But in other cases when a guy is in threat of losing the ball when hitting the ground, pressing the ball against the field is an unfair advantage. Lesson from this is Megatron next time better tuck the ball in such an important situation.

i dont have a video, but in the 1998 NCAA womens tournament, UCLA was robbed in the second round against Alabama. Alabama was down 1 with 0.8 seconds remaining and had to go length the court. They called a timeout. They then ran the baseline on the imbounds which is illegal after a timeout but nothing was called. They then threw the ball the length the court and it was tipped the ball bounced over to another girl who caught it and turned and shot the ball to win the game. The clock never started until the second girl caught it. The whole play lasted a couple seconds and the refs just ran off the court without reviewing the replays or providing any explanation. All 3 refs were suspended from the tournament the NCAA gave an official appology to ucla and that summer they made specific rule changes to make sure it wouldnt happen again. Worst screw job i have seen in basketball.
