For me and the Sonics it was Chris Wilcox from 2005 to 2008…He had come into that season with a career high average of just 8.6 ppg and then he erupts for 14 and 7 over 3 seasons (granted the Sonics were terrible over those 3 seasons) and then after he left, he fell back down to Earth averaging just 8.3 ppg for his highest output in any of the next 7 seasons.

 As a Lakers fan there are 2 players that come to mind. First is Cedric ceballos, who we picked up prior to the 94 season. He went on to average over 20 ppg each of the next 2 years, and was even selected to an all-star team in 95. He never came close to those numbers again after we traded him in 1996.

The second player is sedale threatt, who was a journeyman pg we picked up to back up magic Johnson in 1991. After magic abruptly retired he was elevated to starter and actually turned out to play much better than most people expected. He averaged about 15 and 7 apg over the next 2 years, and was in all honesty probably our most consistent player during that time period.

 Sedale and his son, along with a couple ex-NBL players from the states run a youth basketball program in my suburb in Australia that I went to the last few years when I was in highschool- fantastic coach. Took me from an average run of the mill guy to playing on a couple state championship teams. Owe him everything basketball wise.

 Andrew Bynum Lakers 2011 he was on the cusp of a breakout season a year before, but he finally busted out and with almost 19 points and 12 rebounds that year. Such a darn shame he always got injured after though.

Brandon Jennings.. Rookie year bursts out with 55 in a game a couple weeks into the season and added a little excitement for a couple years. Ended up being a high usage low efficiency point guard. Really liked the pick at the time and most people thought he was potentially a special player but didn’t really pan out. There’s definitely a lot more realistic hope now than there was in the Brandon Jennings years

 Rondo has been everywhere on the spectrum: 

2006-2008 Questionable young point guard…can he really be the starting floor general for three HOF’s?

2009-2013 Nightly triple double machine

2014-2015 Stubborn and injured.  Rondo had multiple public disagreements with Coach Carlisle of the Dallas Mavericks and seemed to just give up on the team come postseason

2015-Present Semi-return to aightness…leads the league in asissts for a really disfunctional Sacramento Kings team

 Rondo, at 30 years old, is at the tail end of his prime.  Looking forward to see what he does this season next to Wade,  Butler, and the Bulls…It will definitely be a wild ride in Chicago!

 Mike James 2006 season for toronto was one of the most random statistical anomalies I can remember. 20.3 ppg, 5.8 apg, 44% from 3. The guy was a backup for most of his career and never averaged more than 12 in any other season. He played like a borderline all-star that year though.

Mike Dunleavy Jr in the 07-08 season for the Pacers.

Averaged 19.1ppg 5rpg and 2.5apg and played in all 82 games for Indiana, I thought we were going to have a dynamic duo in he and Granger.

As a Raptors fan definitely Demar Derozan in his sophomore year when he averaged 17-ppg. Him and Sonny Weems tore up Summerleague before that Season and on the verge of losing Bosh he showed the Raptors they could hand him the keys to the franchise.

Dorell Wright’s 2010-2011 season

 Carlos Boozer had a nice little surprise rookie campaign in Cleveland, and then in his second year he managed to ratchet it up to a totally unexpected notch, with 15.5 points 11.4 rebounds on 52 percent from the field in 34.6 minutes per contest. 

Of course he Benedict Arnolded the organization and had some great years in Utah, but nobody saw a year like that coming from Booz.

 As a lifelong Raptor fan mine has to be Anthony Parker. Left the league at the conclusion of the 2000 season after averaging 3.6 PPG. Parker returns to the league after playing in Israel to average double digit scoring over the next three seasons (12.4, 12.5 and 10.7) while shooting 44, 43 and 39 percent from the three. Everytime he elevated for a three I remember feeling like it was automatic.

 Orlando Magic…one of the first breakthrough players for us Scott Skiles. After years of being a back up he became one of our first reliable players. Running the offense he averaged 17.2 PPG, 8.4 APG while shooting 45/41/90 in 1991.

 Not my team but was a fan of the Suns teams in the early to mid 90’s that had Barkley.  

Richard Dumas.  I was a huge fan of his and he had one breakout year.  I am not going to look at the stats but he basically came on the scene, had an outstanding year for that Suns roster and then was never heard from again.  Does anybody know if he had drug problems or something?  Seemed to have a lot of potential on the wing but went completely Ghost.
