llperezI first watched this team in last years california state championship game and when i heard the announcers say that the Ball brothers were all UCLA commits, i immediately became interested in them as a team. Well this year they went 35-0 and won the california open division state championship last night and finished the year ranked the #1 team in America which was helped by beating the #2 team monte verde from florida giving them their only loss of the year.
I just watched highlights on the internet of chino this season, that was until last night when i finally got to see a whole game when they won the california title. They beat every team in the california playoffs by20+ points. Lst night They had like 5 alley oop dunks and shot with no conscience taking NBA range threes early in the clock. Very fun team to watch. They scored over 100 eighteen times this season.
As for the players, Lonzo Ball was the senior leader. A 6-6pg with crazy athleticism and passing skills. Seeing him in the open court with the ball in his hands always has you on edge waiting to see what he would do. Hes like a skinny more bouncy jason kidd.
Leangelo Ball is the junior. He led the team with 29ppg on the season and is the most physical of the group and likes to bang down low. Not a great athlete though, he blew lots of layups as you could see he didnt really have great hang time.
But the brother who i really wanted to talk about is the youngest of the group, limelo Ball. Having just watched highlights all season, i figured he was flashy but figured there had to be lots of turnovers and bad shots that i didnt catch since he was so small and young. But thats not what I saw last night, he wasnt being dragged along by his brothers, he was right there with them. He already shoots the best of the three and he had some nice passes and scoop layups. Even more surprising was that they actually advanced him up a grade so that he could have one year of playing highschool ball with his brothers. He is still 14 and will graduate at 17 years of age. Everybody is saying he could be the best of them when all is said and done, of course there is a long ways to go.
The team also had a freshman 6-9 center who was blocking and contesting everything down low. In 5 playoff games he blocked 28 shots. He is going to be a big time recruit in 3 years.
Anyways, just an awesome team and the announcers were saying they are probably the best team from california in decades.

DukeDaSquadParticipantIts Lamelo but they do have weird/unique names so its not a big deal. Lamelo’s game is really advanced for his age. Hes going to be ridiculous when he catches up to his brothers in height. His skill level is way beyond his age. Last summer he dropped 30 on Kobi Simmons’ AAU team before he even entered high school. He and Lonzo have really weird jumpshots but it works for them. I think Lamelo’s will change as he gets stronger like most young players do.
It is so weird to me how unathletic Liangelo looks, especially considering that Lonzo is a very good athlete. When he runs, it looks like he is wearing heavy boots and it sometimes looks like he is playing with an injured foot. His lack of athleticism is also obvious in the couple clips i have seen of him dunking on the fastbreak where he barely manages to get off the floor. At this point, he is obviously the least popular brother and I want to see what improvements he makes in his athleticism and ball handling next year,

ChicagoCaseyParticipantNot trying to rain on the Ball Brothers and Chino Hills parade. That team is loaded w/ great talent in the Ball brothers and their 6’9" freshman teammate. Yeah, they are the number one team in the country, but they run a system that is hard to prepare for at the high school level, definitily when going against out-of-state schools, like a Monteverde. Running a high pace, run-and-gun type offense helps a lot and it inflate their stats. So, by saying LaMelo Ball put up 30 on Kobi Simmons means little to nothing, due to the fact that the pace and number of possessions that team possess. This is not knocking the team, the team is the best in the country and they win game. This team is like a Chip Kelly Oregon Ducks team playing high school teams that are not equiped to play against them.
I only view Lonzo Ball as the only "special" one in the family. A lot would praise the freshman LaMelo, but Lonzo is the star player. I don’t believe he is athletic as "llparez" stated him out to be, but he is pretty athletic, can pass the ball with the best of them, and he have a pretty funky shot that will need fixing.
I start not to assume who is growing to grow due to the fact that I assume a lot of highly touted freshman are bound to grow, but didn’t.

llperezlonzo was easily the most atheltic guy on the court yesterday, he had 3 or 4 dunks where he got up easily. Dude has silly bounce, not slam dunk competition type stuff but he also has great speed.
As for lamelo not being special, i mean he is 14 years old and should still be in 8th grade right now and instead is putting up numbers as a starter on the best team in the country. He shoots from nba range right now. In fact they played at the sacramento kings arena with the nba line on the court and he took a few that were well behind the NBA line. He had the highlight of the night where he drove the lane and flipped up a scoop alley oop to his teammate running the baseline for the dunk. Its obviously early for him and who knows how he continues to develop, but im thinking he could be very special going forward as he gets bigger and draws more responsibilities minus his brothers these next 3 years.
And you are correct about the stats being inflated, that much is true. Still, if you are beating the best teams and blowing everyone out, they are not empty stats. Just higher then they would be elsewhere.

ChewyParticipantDad is 6’4, his two younger brothers are 6’3 and 6’5. He’s 5’11. Sometimes genetics are weird.
But yeah, as of now it is a normal assumption that he will grow. Just not garunteed.
I’m just so excited to see how these boys translate to the college game. I’ve never really seen players play as loose as them and still win like they do.
