Tragedy struck Romanian basketball this weekend, as former Sacred Heart player Chauncey Hardy died after an incident in a night club. Hardy was a rookie with CSS Girgiu.

Reports Adi Micinic of TotalBasket.ro: “Along with a few of his teammates – most of them locals – Hardy went to celebrate the second victory by Girgiu, a team which is playing in the first time in the first division, in as many games in that town’s only club.

“Giurgiu had topped Dinamo Bucharest, 91-86, in overtime. Hardy put in the best performance for his team with 22 points and nine assists.

“It remains unclear what happened because everybody in the town is afraid to speak about this incident.

“Hardy was taken to a nearby hospital and was later sent to Bucharest. Doctors tried to operate on him but he died after a second heart attack as a result of the beating.

In the early hours of this morning, wire services were reporting that an arrest has been made in the attacks, with 25-year-old Ionut Adrian Tanasoaia taken into custody by police after surrendering himself.

According to reports, “A preliminary autopsy revealed a massive hemorrhage and broken skull. Girgiu County Hospital spokeswoman Elisabeta Bene said Monday that doctors initially suspected Hardy was in a coma [following the incident] because he had been drinking.”

Hardy was 23 years old and been in Romania for a little more than a month.

Thats sad.  On an unrelated topic I had no idea they played basketball in Romania
